Supercharger Reference Information for the 3UR 5.7L

This post will evolve over time and is meant to give quick and easy access for basic modifications and options.

Superchargers - There are four supercharger options ranging in size and performance. These are all "bolt on" applications and meant to be installed on a stock engine. All options allow for upgrades to increase their power output. There are pros and cons to each option.

    Magnuson 2650 (Released 2023) - 2.65L

Harrop - 2.65L, twin intercooler brick

    Whipple - 2.9L

Supercharger Kit Details, Issues, Maintenance, etc.

    Magnuson 2650:

Includes - 535cc injectors, intake with 4" MAF tube, upgraded fuel pump, spark plugs, basic tune

    Issues -

    Belts -

    "Stock" Gates Belt - 116.188" K081153

    Information on smaller belts: https://www.tundras.com/threads/general-supercharger-thread.85513/page-419#post-3428242

    Couplers -

    Rebuild -

    Harrop:

Includes - All stages include 340LPH DW fuel pump, 51psi (without vacuum, 40psi with) fuel pressure regulator (https://www.tundras.com/threads/general-supercharger-thread.85513/page-423#post-3436747). Stage 1 includes 85mm modular pulley, stage 2 includes DW 650cc injectors and 80mm modular pulley, .

Issues - Early Harrop's may have issue with the throttle body extension harness, resulting in a CEL regarding throttle body voltage. Harrop will supply a new harness if notified.

"Stage 1 Harrops" REQUIRE larger injectors. Stock injectors max out at 5000rpm and the engine becomes dangerously underfueled. 535cc injectors minimum are recommended, ideally 650cc or larger if additional modifications are planned.

"Stage 1 Harrops" should be tuned. The stock tune experiences knock, delayed fuel enrichment, and other issues.

    Belts -

    "Stock" Continental Belt - 117.7" 4081177

    "Stock" Gates Belt - 117.7" K081177

    Gates HD - 117.7" K081177HD

    Couplers -

    Rebuild -

    Whipple:

Includes - 650cc injectors, 340LPH DW Fuel Pump, modular pulley

    Issues - TBD

    Belts -

    "Stock" Gates Micro V Belt -120" K081196

    Gates HD - 120” K081196HD

    Couplers -

    Rebuild -

    TRD/Magnuson:

Includes - 535cc injectors, intake with 4" MAF tube, upgraded fuel pump, spark plugs, basic tune

Issues - A aftermarket tune is highly recommended. The stock Magnuson/TRD tune is known to have knock issues. The Magnuson otherwise has no inherent issues.

Belts - Belts can stretch over time, and a smaller pulley can require a smaller belt to prevent belt slip.

    "Stock" Magnuson belt - 112.6" Dayco 5081125

Smaller belts - 112.4" both Continental 4081124/Gates K081124HD (recommended for smaller pulleys)

Couplers - Couplers wear out over time, and will sound like sand in the intake as the coupler slaps back and forth. They require the nose cone to be removed.

The Superchargers online coupler kit (includes o-rings) for $150, made from PEEK: https://superchargersonline.com/product/toyota-trd-magnuson-tunder-coupler-replacement-kit-updated/
ZZP Black Replacement Coupler for $10, OEM replacement, appears to be delrin: https://zzperformance.com/products/replacement-supercharger-coupler?_pos=1&_sid=bd3e6a0af&_ss=r
ZZP Green Replacement Coupler for $20, "oil impregnated polymer upgrade": https://zzperformance.com/products/zzp-supercharger-coupler?_pos=2&_sid=bd3e6a0af&_ss=r

    Coupler Replacement Guide: https://superchargersonline.com/202...uson-supercharger-for-the-5-7l-toyota-tundra/

    Rebuild -

Superchargers Online does inhouse rebuilds. A basic rebuild costs $1350 and the supercharger is stripped down, cleaned, new bearings and lubrication, and inspected. If new rotors are required, they are an additional $1250.

    Basic Supporting Modifications

These list just a couple of the common modifications to support the supercharger and are highly recommended.

Fuel Pumps - The stock fuel pump cannot keep up with the supercharger, often even in stock supercharger form. An upgraded pump provides more fuel flow to prevent leaning out. The pump requires the gas tank to be dropped, and the new pump connection to be spliced into the stock connection inside the tank, and the new pump to be mounted to the fuel catch can inside the tank.

    Installation Instructions from Prospeed: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0...EED_TUNDRA_FUEL_PUMP_UPGRADE.pdf?v=1602272845

DW 340 - Does not require modifications to run

Walbro 450Ti - $200 for the install kit, flows enough fuel for 750+ injectors, may require wiring modifications to supply enough power to the pump

URD Fuel Pump Kits - Lots of options, includes some extras, none flow much but are more than the stock pump

    Fancy fuel pump install: https://www.tundras.com/threads/general-supercharger-thread.85513/page-181#post-3070380

    Spark Plugs

    IKH22 (stock for Magnuson)
IKH24 (colder version of the above)
Ruthenium HX forced induction specific plugs (other alternative used by Tacoma guys)

    Gapping:

Fuel Injectors - The two common fuel upgrades are the fuel pump, and then injectors. With a higher flowing pump, a higher flowing injector will soon be needed to inject more fuel into the combustion chamber. A larger injector can supply more fuel, but tuning fidelity may suffer as the injector gets larger. A rule of thumb is you want 80% injector duty cycle at WOT, so there is a 20% reserve capability of the injector. Once at 100% duty cycle the injector physically cannot move more fuel and the engine will begin to lean out.

    Stock Tan - 372cc

    TRD Green Injectors/Magnuson - 535cc (44% bump over stock)

DeatschWerks 650cc (75% bump over stock, 22% bump over TRD Greens)

Prospeed 750/725cc (95% bump over stock, 36% bump over TRD Greens)

Five-O 750cc (95% bump over stock, 36% bump over TRD Greens)

Prospeed 1000cc (169% bump over stock, 87% bump over TRD Greens)

Stock (left) vs TRD (right). Some injectors have different sizes and shapes.

Tuning - A tune can make or break a vehicle. A good tune will increase horsepower and torque and drivability, a bad tune will destroy an engine. There are multiple software options to tune the Tundra, and multiple tuning companies that can provide a tune, either remotely via email or with a dyno locally.

HP Tuners Software - Requires purchasing 4x Credits and their MPVI device and having a laptop. $600 just to unlock the vehicle and buy the device. Allows for control of the transmission shifting, engine parameters, CEL codes, torque limits, etc. This thread has information on HPT. HPT has its own dedicated forum as well, with a thread called "Toyota Repository" that has indepth information as well.

VF Tuner Software - Requires purchasing credits and their OBD interface and having a laptop. Allows for control of the transmission, engine, and other parameters. Perhaps more advanced than HP Tuners, albeit less information and perhaps more difficult to tune with. This thread has information on VFT. VFT has its own forum as well.

Tuning Companies - HPT and VFT are stand alone software. Other companies use those, and other proprietary software, to create tunes so you dont have to learn and mess with anything. Prices vary wildly, but here are a few options: Prospeed, D3, DAP, YotaWerx, OTT, etc.

Intakes - The intake has two main functions, resizing of the diameter where the MAF sensor sits, and flowing cool air into the engine. As more air flows, the tube diameter where the MAF sits will have to increase. The MAF can only measure so much air, and a larger tube will decrease the air velocity so the MAF will read lower. More air = larger diameter = happy MAF. When the tube size is changed, the tune must be adjusted accordingly.

Stock Intake - 3.5" diameter cold air intake

Magnuson Intake - 4.0" diameter cold air intake

Prospeed Intake - 4.5" diameter pseudo cold air (the box is not sealed from the engine bay)

Numerous home built intakes exist as well.

Gauges - A wideband air fuel ratio sensor is highly recommended. The stock sensor can only read down to 11.9 AFR, which is not rich enough for a boosted engine. When the stock gauge reads 11.9 you may be at 11.8 or at 9.8 and have no way of knowing. A wideband sensor will read the full range of fueling and help with tuning and monitoring the engines health.

Innovate PSB-1 - $320, reads both AFR and boost, has multiple display and programming options.

Innovate Datalogging Variables for HPT: https://www.tundras.com/threads/general-supercharger-thread.85513/page-227#post-3130290

AEM Wideband - $240 (multiple options though), reads AFR, has OBD2 pass through for datalogging

    Pulleys

There are many modifications that exist beyond the scope of this post. The most basic modification is to decrease the pulley size, this will make the supercharger spin faster and create more power.

TRD/Magnuson 1900 Pulleys - The stock pulley is 2.45" and is pressed on. There are options down to 2.0" with further details in this thread, however the pulley must be removed and the new one pressed on. The stock design is NOT modular. Different options listed in this thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/pulleys-for-magnuson-trd-supercharger.114871/

    (Aftermarket modular pulley shown below)

Harrop - The stock pulley is 85mm, the stage 2 pulley is 80mm, Harrop also offers a 77.5mm and 75mm pulley. The pulley is modular.

77.5mm Pulley Harrop created for the forum: https://www.harrop-usa.com/harrop-8pk-supercharger-pulley-19.8-offset-99-PLY16309-GT/p104

Whipple - Stock pulley is 3.625" and is a modular design

Magnuson 2650 - Stock pulley is 86mm to the outside of belt and a modular design similar to the Harrop. Aftermarket options down to 70mm.

My understanding is Stage 1 does not require a tune. Fuel quality is the only constraint on getting their numbers.

I ordered one for my 2020, I won't have it installed until late spring/early summer. When I reached out to Harrop asking about support for the 2020s this was their reply:

Thanks for your interest in our products. This kit as stage 1 is available for 2020 Tundra. Our stage 1 kit uses the factory calibration as we've modified parts of the fuel system to suit our supercharger. I've attached a tech article that better explains this, please review it and let me know if you have any questions.

I've attached the file they supplied as well. Edit: I had to remove the file due to the "Commercial in Confidence" markings. If you reach out to Harrop USA they will provide you the document I wanted to share.

    Hope this helps

A thought on that statement from Harrop, if stage 1 requires no tune, wouldn't technically Magnuson's kit work on 2020+ trucks as well? consider TVS1900 pushes less air, thus less likely to run lean?

Good question since they are both TVS type blowers.

I called up a performance shop in orange, CA to see if they would install a Harrop supercharger. They stated they have done a bunch of magnuson tundras and feel comfortable doing it. They double checked to see whether the ecu for my year was available or not (2019 isn’t yet) and stated that without a tune it wasn’t appropriate for Harrop to sell it that way. It sounded like I will have to wait until the ecu is available before they would install and they would be more comfortable with their work warranty also. The CARB EO states no tune is required but would shops be willing to take that risk installing without a tune. And then if I do get a tune, then I void the CARB EO??!!!

@Platinum714 If you want a blower with a tune someone posted their install and some pulls over on reddit with the Maggie installed on their 2019. The installer used OV Tune for the calibration.

If you reach out to Harrop they'll send you their tech guide. They recommend a tune in their documentation but explain why it isn't necessary for their Stage 1 kit.

"To summarize, Harrop recognise a tuned option would be best. Where one does not exist, Harrop opted to test the operation of the stock tune with the Supercharger and are content that the modest boost upgrade of the Stage 1 kit works within the limits of the factory tune. The parameters of the stock tune extend satisfactorily to within the increased airflow of the upgrade as is evident by timing and knock control when combined with 98RON (93 AKI) fuel, component enrichment protection, increased shift torque reduction and the absence of modification induced MIL light from increased air flow.
Very recently, tuning has become available on some 3UR-FE ECUs so further analysis of higher output and the respective limits became possible. The results were that re-calibration of 3UR-FE Vehicles was not advantageous for the Stage 1 kit (Ø85mm pulley), as long as the Harrop Supercharger kit is Installed as supplied, completely and without further modifications."

Maybe someone with experience like @ViktorG can explain if and why a tune is required for the base Harrop Stage 1 and how safe it is without one.

Will you guys be getting the ovtune after supercharging? Will the tune be similar between TRD and Harrop?

Nope. I’ll never put any OVtune product on any of my vehicles. If the blower doesn’t run properly it goes back on the shelf until another tuner company cracks the 2020 ECU.

As to your second question I doubt they are interchangeable tunes. I’ve not heard of people putting Maggie tune profiles on their Harrop builds. If it were possible the Harrops for 2019s would be supported; Harrop could just copy the Maggie tune

That’s interesting to know. Have you had a bad experience with Ovtune?

Yeah I wasn’t sure when I saw that they offered tunes for supercharger that maybe they could be used for the Harrop. Glad I asked.

i just got my fuel pump recall completed so getting it ready for install. Pretty soon mine should be shipping soon!

Keep in mind most folks (from what we can see) seem happy with OV. Ask your installer. Unless you are tuning it yourself it is their opinion that matters.

I didn't get that far. When I was shopping for blowers and an installer several of the shops I talked to strongly recommended against using the product.

As to not appear like I'm talking ship about one of the beloved vendors here, there is a big OV tune development thread you can read through. If they didn't nuke all the negative comments and exchanges you'll see why I won't do business with them. Same thing over on the Taco forums. There are some folks over on reddit that have used them for their Maggie install on a 2019 Tundra, you can ask for their second opinions if you like (there are two Tundra subreddits).

I really don't know the answer for sure. I'm have an electronics and computer background, I've cross trained into some mechanical work but by no means an expert in tuning.

I'm not sure why Harrop doesn't support their blower with OV Tuner; Magnuson switched shortly after they cracked the 2019s (their 2018s and below use HP Tuner). So I don't know for sure if they are interchangeable or not. Performance wise the Maggie is about the same as the Stage 1 Harrop but I'm sure there are some nuanced differences besides the volume they can push. I know there was a video comparison of the two bolt on systems exploring build quality and other aspects.

I'm stoked for you! If all goes well I'll be joining you in the S/C club by next Friday.

I'm skipping the tune on my Harrop stage 1 because of the following from Harrop:

So, in late May....I'll enjoy forced induction. That is until 2020 ECU's can be accessed by HPTuners, and then Stage 2 will find a welcome home.

How much should I budget for rear tires? <smiling like a jackass eating bed-slats>

Whatever this forum told me to do
    just pondering here....

    from reading Harrop's whitepaper....

can one add HP to a stage 1 Harrop by increasing the octane?

Stage 1, on 93 octane, appears to knock less than a NA 5.7 on 87 octane

so would 95 octane knock even less and allow more timing advance?

I wouldn't expect a large amount of additional HP by switching to 95 from 93 but its possible the 5.7 is more responsive to the change in fuel. Im interested in hearing what the pros think.

The ECU won't advance the timing due to better fuel, but it will retard timing less with better fuel.

This forum is seriously full of temptations.

Ordering day: "oh gosh, I'll just do tires since it has decent suspension, yes, makes sense, I will not do anymore mods"
First week: "hey intake is on sale"
Second week: "hey, look at those cool trail boxes"
third week: "look at those cool tie downs"
    1 month after: "hmmmmm headers...."
2 months: "I need to re-gear, yes, to tow the trailer better, yes, I need the transmission cooler kit too"
now: "stupid neighbor with that TRX, I can build my own Tundra version, its just widebody and 700hp right"

Are there any dyno numbers for a stage 1 that has no tune? Because I feel like all the ones I’ve seen people or harrop post still had HP tune. (I think) if not, one of you guys should dyno just to see where the power level is at without a tune.

They’re off 70th and Washington. The tundra is parked out front during business hours. I take the long way home to avoid seeing it every day. Too much temptation.
