I wish I had that space over there. I'd install a 2nd battery. Which would make it easy as shit to install a system, there's way more space in the passenger firewall grommet than the driver side. I'd relocate the fuel resistor (the finned thing) up to the side wall of the engine bay for more clearance.

New here, had my tundra for almost a decade, and on Sept 17 she turns 20 years old. Finally putting some work in and making some upgrades. Just under 170k on the odometer, many years to go!

Today I’m getting 5100s put on front and rear, tomorrow is new tires

Welcome! As you're thinking through things to toss on, or if you have any niggling stuff to fix, or you need a copy of manuals, wiring diagrams, or whatever, this thread is a great place to hit if you haven't already. Everything from suspension to audio to TSBs and known problems that may not be super common info, it's all in there.

That’s for a different tire they make (the MT), same brand. I’m looking at the ATR, an aggressive looking AT tire in the 285/75/16 size. I drive 7,000 miles a year or so between my two trucks, so once the 2019 sells, this one will see about that by itself.

Been working on an auxiliary fuse panel the last few days, think it turned out pretty good! Ditch lights in the near future and any other lighting I plan on adding. Hood strut just clears the top of the ABS. Found 2 partially threaded holes that I was able to mount to.

I did an 18 minute start to finish oil change on lunch in the parking lot. And I did it in front of the "car guys". Lol I was asked questions.

And the only reason it took me 18 minutes instead of 14 minutes is cuz I had to walk all the way back into the shop and grab a set of slip jaw channel locks because my oil filter that I put on hand tight I could not get off.

I think the best non-partisan tl;dr version is "strong feelings about the forum moderation here"

It's driven off a few good members here. Karma Kannon was another I can think of.

Moderation is a tough thing (in all senses). But in the forum moderation sense, I assume it's a thankless job. One of those jobs where if you're doing a great job, no one even notices you're there. But anytime you put someone in charge, they have to use their best judgement. And you don't need to spend long amongst humanity to learn that not everyone's judgement lines up perfectly.

It's like the concept of the "benevolent monarch". People think if they just got their way, everything would be great. Put me in charge! I'm open minded, fair, compassionate. But...by definition if I do things the way I think they should be done, there will be many people who don't agree with me. Now there are people who are oppressed. Even if my absolute power doesn't corrupt me absolutely, I'm still imposing my will on people who don't agree with me.

Beware the idea of getting everything you want. Without going into politics, it's not hard to imagine where that leads.

I haven't seen first hand the examples of people running afoul of the moderators. But I know from other forums how sticky it can be. People think "free speech" means I can say whatever I want. But just like if you walk into my house and start insulting my family I can kick you out and you can yell free speech all you want, it's not covered. You aren't respectful, you're out of my house. And like it or not, since it's my house, it's my definition of respectful. Your house, your definition.

It's definitely a conversation we've had, both publicly, and in some of the group PM chains that've come and gone over the years, since it's frowned upon to talk about specific moderation decisions out in the open. Probably because doing so publicly often inspires mod-bashing. Which, to your point, as if these mods don't already have a thankless enough job, they're also having to mete out when someone has colored outside the lines, etc. But when you're on the firing line, or its your natural behavior or beliefs that are impacted by the rules or decisions, it's not always so easy to see it that way. Add in that sometimes commentary will be blatantly afoul of the forum rules, but quite often things are ambiguous or up to interpretation, so context or clues can be missed from not knowing or understanding some of the cliques on here and how they roll, what they say. I know that caught Darkness specifically once or twice. But yeah, this is probably a better convo for the Lunch Table thread. I've moderated a shitload of other communities. I won't do it anymore. I don't even know if I'd do it if I were paid money to do it. It's just a shit job, and a thankless one at that.

All up in my sophisticated spray booth, getting it done. I’m sure it’ll look like an at home job. This is such an awkward f’n piece to work with. 3 coats in, 3 to go. Then assess if I’m going to bother with clear. I’m thinking I will, just because chips and whatnot.

Oh and quick PSA: I bought this Duplicolor “Prep Spray” in a pinch last year for another project (unrelated to truck) I was working on, but never used it.

OMFG. This shit smells like urinal cake. I just about gagged the first time I used it. It was like that waft you get pissing in a highboy urinal with a fresh cake at the bottom, only 10x stronger. UGH. Avoid. It works fabulous but the friggin smell is enough to make you :puke:

I may not be as cool as those guys were/ are but I understand where they come from as far as some onf the "I'm in charge" people on here go. Not to kick a hornets nest but some of these mods, just like on almost every forum, are probably some of the most miserable have never been in charge people on the planet that we're given in inkling of authority to just keep things civil and they turned into giant raging power tripping pro-communist douches. Translate in that in your head however you want but I understand where they're coming from. It's part of the reason I don't get on the vortex anymore and I definitely don't mod on there anymore because of the type of people that are the moderators on there. Dick riding airbag chasing car owner worshiping You're only cool if you spent $9,000 on a single wheel kind of idiots that will shit on everybody else to appease the high dollar mommy and Daddy funded my build type of people. So like the financial 0.5% of the cry harder babies, corrupt would be an improvement. Sorry it's long-winded I know but I understand.

And we're speaking in regards to the VWVortex forum mods. Wouldn't want anyone to mistake what I'm saying here and get all, well vortex user on me about it.

Truck made it home. Rode pretty good, aside from a bit of washboard gravel road on the way to grandmas in bellville. Checked my axle, no leaks, and my bumpstops didnt disintegrate.

While on that washboard i tested my abs & didnt feel any pedal pulsing, and im pretty sure the fronts were locked. No ABS light, not too worried about it, but good to know. Gonna wait until dusk to unload the logs.

I am so bad with Electric systems, but I am terrified of dead batteries and being stuck in the mountains with no way out. I really want a second battery and I do like quality speakers and a minor subwoofer upgrade, its just not something I understand well, and of course I still want to hook up buttons for the blank spots. I prefer cable selection lockers over E-lock or AIR lockers but if I could get an Air system installed in my engine bay I would be able to have quick onboard air - could weld an old propane tank into the frame opposite the fuel and may be able to level out the front springs a bit. that might add enough weight to run 700lb springs and level it a bit. Measured the Front again, passenger side is still between .25"-0.5" (lets call it 0.35") higher at 4th clip so maybe I do have slight frame damage if everyone else is higher at these setting on the drivers side. lockers and Airing down tires has been a huge factor in getting out of snow for me in my past job. we used to wheel people into the wilderness before the roads could get plowed in the spring and would air down 38's to only 5 PSI. 4x4low with an added second hi-low reducer allowed me to crawl 5mph in 4th rear flooring it haha. IMG_0258.jpg

anyone running an ARB air system? how quickly can you air up your tires with it? can it be done for around $500?

Not a masterpiece, will need wet sand and polish but here we are. Got a run or two to address. Not pro but didn’t cost me much of anything so I'm good with it.

Edit to say, the paint was from AutomotiveTouchup.com, they sent a rattle can and clear a couple years back when I had intent to touch up something else. So I needed to use it up anyway, dunno what I paid for it. I paid for the JB Weld though. So $10 and some old paint, and whatever the hell I paid for the grille. Original condition was a shitshow (As-bought, after sanding and patching, in primer)

I would not trust the mini locker only to air up tires. It works great for locker but thats it. When i go on trips , i take synthwave - fully charged, solar panel, cig adapter and 2nd battery hooked up to low budget inverter with tire inflator. Yes it takes up more room. But i keep my nice compressor behind my sear (Rc) and a spare cheap one in toolbox in water tight bag. That way I have cig light power option and 110 from inverter if needed. Whats 10 extra pounds for a lil security. I keep the battery in marine box boltted inside the toolbox. Box is water tight, but would not keep water sensitive equipment in full time. I try to keep stuff like that in water tight bag made for sailing behind bench seat. Nightvision, glass, emergency radio, uhf/vhf talky, compressor, 10mm. I think thats about it. Inverter mounted to back i side wall, run cables out rear window to extra battery.

Its a lil involves but dont have to worry about frying my ecu when half awake.

I've only had to do it a few times, but I'll admit I already miss having a manual transmission for this reason. Really nice to be able to pop-start a truck with a dead battery. I should definitely work on a backup plan since I spend so much time off road and out of cell service.

That sounds like the way to go! Awesome thanks. now I just need to find and fit a full size spare under the truck. do 33x10' tires fit under there? Will the cable hold that much weight?

does anyone on here run the Bilstein B8 5160 (25-311273) on a stock rear end? I guess it says it can accommodate 0-2" of lift but I was worried about bottoming it out without a lift. I guess I might be ok to just run them on stock leaf springs?

There's a few of us on here with twin ARBs both under the hood and in the cab. I bought my twin a few years ago for less than $500, but think they've gone up a bit since then. I can fill up all four of mine in less than five minutes.

Did you decide to use the OEM mesh or something different? What color, if any?

Going with OEM, same that's there on the shop table next to it.

Ordering a red TRD badge (this one) to go in the lower driver side corner while the sale is going on.

I also need to redo the felts on the back side, but I've got the replacement felts already and pics of how to install, so I'm good there. Will come after wetsand and cut.

I did spray a few coats of each on the backside to cover up some of the repair work. Taped the studs off before hitting it w/paint.
