cool thanks. Since the recall kit does not come with hardware, it's ok to re-use the castle bolt and will I have to transfer the original dust cover along with? I will get the new bolts for sure regardless of which LBJs i get.

Should come with rubbers if I remember what others said on here. As long as you don't do something stupid like hammer on the crown end of the castle nut to break the UBJ free, you should be able to re-use. If you need to hammer on it, thread the castle nut on upside down until its 2-3mm off the UCA and hammer away. I'd use fresh cotters though.

Are you referring to the uppers? I was talking about the lowers, and reusing parts from that.

Kit comes with new dust covers if you order from Ourisman Toyota (look at the pictures on page 9), I reused the castle nut twice already on mine (look at the pictures on page 9)

Parts ordered from local dealership (Lagrange Toyota) for a few dollars more so that I can pick them up tomorrow. I haven't actually tested these ball joints yet lol (I will at least be putting a bar under the tire today to push on it and watch the joint), but there is a distinct clunk when I hit a bump with the driver's front wheel, but I can't visually see any issue. The recall was actually done back in 2007 on my truck, but its at the 130k mile mark so I figured why not add that to the clean slate project list. I will be making a thread post in the near future with my endeavors to "go through" the truck and what I've done and what I'm considering in replacing/upgrading, or repairing. Been reading heavily through some of the RUST threads in here..... Tacoma World saved me many times in the past on my Tacoma. This forum is beginning to show it's worth for the Tundra, so many thanks.

Is your truck 2wd or 4wd? post some pics of the driver side suspension

that clunk can be so many things, from missing bolts on the trans crossmember if you are 2wd, to bad sway bar bushings, worm out drive shaft carrier bearing and so on…

all x-member bolts accounted for and no visible cracks on it. Honestly I think its the lower bushing of the strut or the tie rod end making the noise now after poking and prodding. And btw, that clunk noise is not at all consistent and rarely do I hear it, and I've only noticed it three times since I've had the truck for about 4 weeks now. The LBJs are solid and no movement so that job will get pushed to back burner for a 'warmer weather job'. I happened to take a look at my Tacoma's LBJs though at the same time because of a knocking noise its been making that I feel in the steering wheel.....that's a different story and is more urgent.

I took several random pics, so feel free to take a look and comment. The rusty pics are all the areas of concern I know about already.

The lower bushing on the strut is crushed. I'm familiar with this from my previous Tundra.

I really don't like this setup with a spacer there and plan to change over to 5100 struts with the 6XX springs and matching shocks in the rear when I have the $$. Right now I'm focusing on the crucial items that need attention.

    PXL_20250124_185716818.jpg

both tie rod ends left a lot to be desired. pretty sloppy feeling imo.

This is the worst area of the entire frame, passenger side about 8-12 inches in front of the front leaf spring mount.

Is it unusual that my 2000 has never had a recall for the Lower Ball Joint? I assumed all the First Gens had recalls on this? Is that not the case?

Do the Lower Ball Joints from 2005-2006 trucks fit on 2000-2004?
The post on page 8 says the part numbers are for 2005-2006. Mine is a 2000 and it the Toyota website says they wont fit on my 2000. Can anyone confirm they will fit?

No they won't, unless you switch out lower control arms, steering knuckles, lower control arms and LBJ bolts. LBJ bolts are spaced differently between the two LBJs/ steering knuckles, and the bolts are different sizes as well.

    Shoot. Thank you!
I had already placed the order and then realized I made a mistake. I was freaking out! Thank you both for confirming.

I found those part numbers @The Black Mamba but they wouldn't come up on the Toyota of Temecula Parts Website, so I went with the ones @Methodical posted. The guy at Temecula Toyota was nice enough to call and changed the order for me before he processed it. Thankfully.

Hopefully the Google web finds these part numbers for the next guy.

When you click on the appropriate PDF, you should be able to click a button to download it, save a copy.

There's a "Watch" function on the forum too, which lets you save a thread in your list and get notifications when someone replies.

    Lots of options here.

00-01 were not part of either SSC ....50J(02 – early 04 MY Tundra) or 70B(04 - 06 MY Tundra), however, Toyota does have "Inspect ball joints and dust covers" every 15K miles as part of the Scheduled Maintenance Guide for a 2000

You have to buy the dust covers separately and they use two of the same holes as the bolts that pass through the LBJ.

No dust covers on the 00, Sir. Fun fact, the 00 didn’t suffer the recall either.
