Yeah maybe an hour to figure out all the connections and stuff. I didnt read any manuals, but I did have to grind down some of the mounting tabs on the HU to fit in the mounting kit. Just used a dremel with a sanding wheel.

CarPlay/Android auto and hotspot are two different things. CarPlay/android auto uses the apps installed on your phone but the interface is on the HU. Hotspot/WiFi provides the HU with an internet connection so you can use apps installed on the HU. Hope that makes sense.

    Installation tips:
    8EB7DDD3-C12B-4684-BF19-9122749CBFAE.jpg
    1) this harness is for the front camera with power cable and rca output (front and rear channels)
    2) this is for the rear camera input. The yellow rca input will come from the canbus harness
    3) use this for the CarPlay adapter with the factory USB adapter
    4) use for accessories: usb drive, tpms module, game controllers, etc.
    5) will not be used if you are using the gps adapters.
    6) I used the supplied mic and placed it here, but put it wherever you like.
    D68B357C-7060-41A4-98FF-F9DA24C55D22.jpg
    7) not used, use the canbus harness instead.
    8) manual sucks, did not provide any useful info.
    9) there is a small wifi antenna (not pictured), plug that to the back of the HU.

Thanks Ken. Yeah ... I am understanding. With Android Auto it obviously is using data from the smartphone since its mirroring but the data is only limited to the apps on the mirroring; therefore, the hot spot allows cell data through all the multiple apps loaded on the HU. Correct?

As of now, this is how I use the unit 99% of the time. Which is why I want to get a 4G USB Sim card modem.

I just want a giant carplay screen. No doubt many will think I am wasting the potential of this head unit by essentially not utilizing the Android OS, but I'm ok with that.

    Pandora
    Spotify
    Google Maps
    Siri assisted Text Messages

    Thats about all I want.

Down the road I may get a mini NES and hide some controllers so my son and I can have fun waiting for mom/daughter in the parking lot.

    Madden NES anyone?

This is very capable of doing that (apple CarPlay). IDK about the mini NES. Ive seen the tesla guys do it so I'm assuming it'll work.

Can you please post a link to the OBDII module you got and how you got it to work? Is there an app you need to install?

Something unique to this HU over the Tesla style is that it OBD 2 works with bluetooth not just wifi. Here is what I use with the app Torque.

HOWEVER!!!! That only works with Android... So if you're using car play you might need to get the WiFi style OBD2 module. So the Module would connect to your phone not the HU. And hopefully the app would show up on car play. The Bluetooth only module will not connect to iPhones.

Could I get that OBD2 reader and just toggle between the android interface and my CarPlay?

When tethered to CarPlay via lightning cable, I’m not sure if Bluetooth is utilized

Hmmm yes you could. Cause you would just close the Carplay app on the HU and open up Torque on the HU.

Very cool - thanks for the tip, I'm going to buy that OBD2 port reader. I want to monitor my trans temp (hopefully its there for 2nd gens) when towing. I don't trust analog gauges

I haven’t figured out how to do that. I might need the torque pro app. Instead of the free one.

Couple of questions about this head unit- What is the mic used for? I don't use bluetooth calling and such, so I am wondering if I can get by without the mic. Also, what are the RMS specs for the head unit? Is it enough to power new door speakers without adding an amp? I was also thinking about getting a small amp like the Alpine Power-pack. Maybe mount that behind the head unit, but if this unit has enough power, then I could just avoid getting the amp. Thanks!

I use the mic for Bluetooth calling but @jmevis did not use the mic. According to Dasaita, it is rated at 50watt x 4 but I doubt that this is true. However, I am using separate amps so I cannot test this. I don’t think there is enough room behind the HU for an amp. You can test the HU first without an amp, and if it turns out to be underpowered, an amp will be needed.

The mic is for calls and voice controls. So think about that too. If you want to talk back to Siri for carplay. I was able to use it with out the external mic, but i couldn't tell if it was using the OEM mic, or a mic built in to the HU. Either way the person on the other end said it sucked. So I will install and external mic.

The HU is rated at 50Wx4 Peak. Here is a quote from the spec - "Superior amplifier Chip :TDA7850 (4*50W Max)"

@916tundra looks like we both have the same idea. @tundraal I do not have JBL and it made my stock speakers louder, and I was able to use the DSP to make them sound pretty good. I still plan on replacing and going external amp but haven't done it yet.

If it’s rated at 50watt max, I am guessing RMS should be around 15-20watt.

Good news for iPhone users especially with A12 chips (iOS 12.1.2 and below). Jailbreak was released yesterday and you can install CarBridge which let you use any apps in CarPlay.

It’s not an OS, it’s a tweak that allows you to use any apps on your iPhone and not just the apps allowed by apple. I.e, YouTube. I won’t be needing hotspot.

Oh you know it’s the head unit. Been anticipating this since I saw yours.

Then camera and step bar lights since I have to crawl the length of my truck to run them.
