Custom wiring conversion harness is absolutely required as the connectors on the 2020 are all new, and not the standard Toyota has used for the last 15+ years. Took a little while to get all of the pieces and wiring pins needed, but all is working 100% like factory. Completed the conversion from my 2019 Navi unit to the 2020 Navi unit today.

All in ~$1500 for the new components, and wiring harnesses, etc. Lots of work and wiring/soldering/heat shrinking ... but all solid wiring / professional conversion harness made and everything works as it came from the factory, plus can take out at any time and put back the old 2019 7" Navi unit.

Does the remote start and everything work like in the 2020 model? I didn’t know how it would be with the Head unit Internet access as well with the different antennas required. Any change to the trim?

can you post info on the connectors and pins and where you purchased them? i would like to do the conversion one day and if you got it working 100%, would be very interested.

Funny they changed the connectors finally after what, almost 35 yrs?! wasnt it like '86 or so that they started using those connectors?

I only did the 2020 navigation retrofit. I'll live without the push button start. It can be done, but it is a huge PIA (looked at wiring diagrams and many new parts and wiring needed) and its not my everyday vehicle, so I can deal with using an old school key, even though for ~$50k and being a 2019 model, you would expect push button start!

    Yea ... 1987 to be exact :)

The connectors you will need for the 2020 Unit are as follows, and all can be had via Russian/Japanese OEM Toyota Parts source @ www.megazip.net <-- fraction of what USA dealers charge ... just need to painfully await overseas shipping. Russian source (when available) is cheaper than Japan.

For vehicle-side female connectors - use Metra standard quick harnesses for aftermarket radio installation on J133 & J134 (Metra 70-1761). J136 you can use a 24-pin toyota camera retention harness (Metra AX-TOYCAM3). J135 you can use a 28-pin toyota steering wheel retention harness (Metra AX-TOY28SWC) ... you may need a few extra pins for the total of 8 pins needed on this connector.

I sourced the new 2020 radio USB connector from the ebay seller that I purchased the 2020 radio from, so i do not have that part number to share, however the additional harness you will need to connect this 2020 usb to the usb wiring behind the 2019 radio is the Metra (AX-TOYUSB).

I have a 14' 1794 with the JBL sound system. Do you think this may work on my truck?

This should work with your JBL unit that you have now. You of course will need to create a custom wire harness to convert from the 1987-2019 connectors to the new 2020 connectors at the back of the new radio. My non-JBL has an external amplifier, so essentially it is the same as far as wiring goes from the new unit to the amplifier and speakers

I no longer have an active TIS subscription, however if you do a 2-day subscription to the techinfo.toyota.com site nad grab me the navigation wiring diagram for your year and JBL system, i can review it against the 2020 system and confirm for sure for you.

If anyone is interested in a 2020 HU, I had it only one month in my truck and swapped for after market. Perfect condition. I do not know any of the details above about fit for older models, but $750, shipped any where in the lower 48. Better than the $1500 on EBay

This. I just sold a break out harness with an amp to a guy with a 2020 Tacoma, it didnt work out. All the 2020 unit have new connectors, Metra doesnt have anything available yet either, so to make it work you'd be cutting the wires and re-pining them.

Its a bummer that Toyota changed the, since they have used the same connectors for so long, and they were even the same from Tacoma to 4Runner to Tundra.

    Dang, im looking for something.

After driving my 19' TRDpro for 2500 miles in less than a week. I absolutely hate the infotainment system. I bought the truck new 3 years ago. Always had a company vehicle, until recently. I want wireless Android auto / carplay but I don't want to take away from any of the factory features my truck offers. Steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, backup camera, nav. I do not want to install a new backup camera or a new microphone for the Bluetooth. I looked on Crutchfield website and didn't find many aftermarket options. You guys have any suggestions on where to look? Looking for something that fits in the dash and sits behind the radio bezel trim and slightly bigger screen is prefered as well. Probably going to put some speakers in the truck to top it off. Please drop links and or pictures if you have them

Look at the kenwood echelon's...1007or 1057. Works great on my 19 tundra...swapped out all speakers and added a JL amp and subwoofer.

you're only going to get approximately 8in screen max (ie Kenwood DNX997XR) if you want one that fits as a double-din radio into a Scosche or Metra dash kit

The Kenwood above and the equivalent JVC (my preference, as it has no large knob) are very similar to what Toyota's most recent offerings look like. I installe this in my friend's 2019 Tundra a few months back. Replaced speakers and amp, etc. as well .... much better sound than original Non-JBL stock system, and Wireless CarPlay! :)

I do miss the remote start, keyless entry and not having to reach in my pocket for keys, but I enjoy making ecoboost piss out their oil when I rev up the 5.7L next to em.

I just don't like this screen protruding out of the dash. I think it looks out of place and trashy. From what I can tell it in and possibly some nine inch will fit behind the– trim. Looking at the Alpine Halo F509. Going to do some more digging. I would do an aftermarket amplifier but I don't feel like running all of the additional wires. Unless our trucks are already wired up and we just need to upgrade the components themselves

For what its worth I like mine more than the latest big screen offering which almost looks too big for the dash...I'm sure if you called James @tech12volt he can come up with a HU that will fit in the old space.

I did check his website for the last few days. It doesn't really offer anything of what I'm looking for. Or do I need to contact him physically?

@panicman and @OGDark Knight have some nice setups with the Pioneer DMH-WT8600NEX getting it as close to the dash as possible (hopefully they’ll throw up some pics). This is the route I’m going as well and will see how close I can get it.

Okay. This! This is VERY clean. I want to do so e so that I don't have to run a new GPS module or a new Bluetooth microphone. But I don't want to lose any functionality of the truck itself. I don't want to lose any of the instrument cluster information. I don't want to lose The Back-up Camera. I don't want to lose steering wheel controls.

With the Pioneer, you’ll also install the Maestro RR adapter. That will retain all factory dash and steering wheel functions.

Now, the Maestro has a lead that plugs right into your OBD. Rather than losing any data readout, you actually gain data that you would need an OBD reader to access. I set up a custom towing dashboard on the Pioneer so I can have a constant chase/trailer view, and monitor transmission temp.

This unit will give you wireless CarPlay and the Android equivalent.

You will need to run a wired microphone. I followed another users advice and ran it up the driver molding and across the headliner to the stock location in the ceiling console. I tucked the factory mic out of the way and hot glued the new mic in place. That took maybe 20 minutes. Sound quality is greatly improved when I talk on the phone.

For GPS I primarily use Waze over CarPlay, or Google Maps. You don’t need anything installed in the truck for GPS, you just need your phone. Likewise if you are a fan of XM, just download the app and you can use it seamlessly through CarPlay.

This head unit totally eliminated the hiss I discovered when I added a 5ch amp, sub, and all new speakers.

This unit allows you to precisely adjust your sound, through enhanced bass and loudness, seat position presets, an adjustable equalizer, adjustable crossover, fader and balance, and finally, through an easy to use volume control for each speaker.

If anyone has any questions, I’m happy to answer.

does the OBD2 port have to be plugged in? I already have a setup that i only use when towing.
