I just purchased my '19 Platinum and am curious if the '20 radio with Apple car play is a plug and play switch? Also, how hard to add the push button start if it can be added? These are not must haves for me, but am curious nonetheless.

As a new 19 owner, I'd like to see if it's at least possible too!

If it's anything like the Auto up/down window switches, not-so-easy/borderline-impossible :(

But for the amount of money you’ll pay for the head unit from Toyota it would be better off going for a Alpine or Kenwood. Even though the Apple CarPlay is there I can guarantee you That the volume and sound cannot compare to aftermarket

I’ve had six cars with push button start. Every time I get in I take the keys out of my pocket because I can’t stand sitting down with keys in my pocket. So then what’s the difference. The only benefit is unlocking the door by touching it

I don't really care about the push button start, its the keyless entry that's useful. if you ran out of battery on your key, the car wouldn't start.

most people want the updated stuff in a truck.
I have to admit I like all the gadgets but I dont use them.
It is just cool to have them.

The NSV light bar gets no use but I have it, the radar crap it comes with I wont use but neat.
I wouldnt mind the push button start but I never had it so I can't miss it on the Tundra.

The HU is outdated as fuck so I will be replacing that.
Not right away because I just dont give that much of a shit about it.

Younger crowd wants the Star Trek Enterprise though and if that sells more trucks and it is what they want they will look for it in another truck like the Raptor.

I have said before that I looked at a lot of trucks including the Raptor. I just wont use all the off road stuff it has.

Yes it does, it has a key connected to the fob you use.

Push button start don’t have ignition key holes, the key inside the fob is for you to open the door.

The real question is will they have a update for Apple play for the older models since really the head unit looks the exact same from exterior beside 1 inch bigger screen

Honestly, I haven't the foggiest. It'll be one of those situations where we'll have to wait and see if someone attempts the swap and is successful. I do know the new radios are a little north of $4k. Might be cheaper to trade the truck in.... :D

I'm about to buy a 2020 Tundra and have spent a couple of hours test driving one. The software in the head unit is different than that in my 2019 4Runner. Also, the resolution is better. This is especially noticeable in the back up camera. I don't know that an older head unit will be able to upgrade to this newer software that is designed to support higher resolutions.

I had a 2016 F150 that did not come with CarPlay. I was able to update that unit because it had the same head unit as the 2017, which came with CarPlay. Besides new software I had to replace the USB port because CarPlay requires a USB with some additional circuitry.

I just found out today that the 2020 has factory remote start that is support by an app. It still shuts off the truck when you open a door, but it will be nice to be able to start the truck from my phone while I am still a good distance away. I had this in my Ford and GMC trucks and it is very handy.

I had a Camry with push button start, and if the battery does die in your fob you place the fob on or just above the button and can then start the car. Should be the same in the Tundra. There is an NFC chip in the back.

Push button start = Thieves can steal your car without breaking anything - happened to my cousins 2018 4-Runner, I am happy not to have that.

Wow! you could do a new head unit, all new speakers and 2 x 10" sub behind the rear seat and still save money.

Shouldn't be the case. My M3 warned me when the battery was getting low, long before it actually died.

I'd like to think Toyota implemented something similar?

They hack into your keys wireless with a computer or something and stand beside your car in driveway, takes less than a minute, happened to my cousin, cameras caught the whole thing...they can start and unlock your vehicle

If someone outside your house can get close enough to your key, they can relay the signal via their own hardware to your car. It's fairly easy.

You can also easily prevent it by buying a case that blocks the signal, and put that case where you store your keys.

I read that you cannot put a 2020 OEM HU with CarPlay In older models because the wiring is different. Someone may have an adapter/harness however but it’s not plug and play.

Like others for the money I would just upgrade to a quality aftermarket option.

Agree. You can get a nice alpine unit and a drone mobile remote start and still save thousands of dollars

Heh, not where I live, it's not.

    1. Live in the middle of nowhere.
    2. Our truck is parked literally right outside our bedroom window; if anyone so much as pulls into our house at any time, we know about it right away.
    3. Plenty of firearms and a camera system. :)
