After multiple trips this summer towing close to 4500lb , I can say that I'm Averaging 215 transmission temp with torque around 217 seeing up to 230 when stopping and accelerating and goes back to 215-217 .

Has your trans temp light ever come on? Like the times when you were stopped at a light?

I was just wondering. In my 2010 it came on around 240 I think, maybe 250. That truck had trans problems though. Haven’t towed with the 2018, but it stays around 188-194 usually. Sometimes goes up to 200-205 when accelerating up a hill at highway speeds.

Same for me without towing , I see similar readings .
I will have dealer service transmission at 60k per the service manual of the truck ( if towing )

Just purchased a 2019 Tundra and am just now finding out about the missing trans cooler. As far as temp warning light is there one? I can't seem to find anything about it in the manual. I previously had a 2008 that had a temp guage. Thanks.

Yes there is one , some claim it comes up at 245 , other say higher , i have been towing all the summer my travel trailer 4500 lb and always managed to keep temp between 215 and 217 that towing with s4 and tow/haul on with torque seeing up to 230 while stopping on tolls and In traffic for very short period and never had the light come on me

Finally found the warning light info in this damn book, lol. I tow a 6500lb 5th wheel and the temp guage always stayed somewhere just over half way on the guage my 08 had. I always used 5th gear though and towhaul unless I was crawling some mountainous areas. I guess 4th gear couldn't hurt though, sacrifice a little gas for the tranny. Thanks again.

The RPM was not that bad add that higher RPM more coolant flow to the trans cooler on our 2019 , just keep an eye on the temp , heard that the gauge on 2007 till 2013 was not that useful and always remained at half

How do you monitor the temp though, isn't there only the warning light?

Get an odb2 reader and download the torque app , you need to configure the pids for the trans temp , look at the beginning of this thread I have a screen capture for the pids you need to configure, trans 1 is the temp at the pan and trans 2 is at the torque

Yeah, I've been doing more reading about these odb "gizmos". Would the scanguage ll do the same job just more pricey cause it doesn't use an app?

Yes ,lot of people use it and It is accurate .

Thanks. If I get one I'll post numbers, unfortunately likely won't be till next summer. Canada, eh. :)
So are odb readers pretty much plug and play or is there more to it than that?

Yeah , I'm done towing for the season myself .
Yes , You can find a cheap one on Amazon and all what you have to do is download the torque app to your phone or tablet ( I use a small Samsung tablet) and just create the 2 pids entry following the formulas In the screen shot I have and your pretty much done , no wires no nothing , will use Bluetooth to communicate with the torque app and it is pretty much as accurate

    Hi all,
Restarting an old but pertinent thread- I'm having the same concerns on my 2020 Crewmax.

On a recent 400 mile trip, towing a 6000lbs trailer, I got a transmission temp temp just as we entered the town. It was about 80degrees that day and I was careful not to push things going over the high altitude passes.

I want to check the transmission fluid level to ensure the factory fill level is correct, but I can't find the thermostat like the OP mentioned. Is the consensus that the 2019/2020 do not have a thermostat at all? In this case do we just check as per the previous models bit not worry about the thermostat pin?

I did check the level as is at 120f and there was overflow so I'm not sure if I'm free and clear at this point.

    Thanks for your feedback again.
    Paul

Did you mean to say you got transmission overheat light or message ?

Sounds like you could use to retrofit your truck with a transmission oil cooler . 2019+ tundras do not come from the factory with one anymore . ( Toyota cost cutting measures ). Feel free to check out and research your way through this thread - https://www.tundras.com/threads/2019-transmission-cooler.60550/

Your transmission is probably low on fluid now. There should be overflow if you remove the check plug at 120 degrees. The fluid level check has to occur within a specified temperature range (99-111 degrees 2014-2018 AB60). Transmission fluid expands as the temperature increases, so if the level was correct at the lower "check" temperature range, then it will have expanded further at 120 deg and should overflow the check pipe. During the fluid level check procedure, you're supposed to shut the engine off and let the fluid cool if the fluid temp gets above 111 degrees.

I have read a couple of sources that said the fluid temperature warning light on Gen3 Tundras comes on at 302 degrees, which is too hot even for full synthetic fluid (WS is a blend). If you got a warning light, then you probably began cooking the fluid. I would probably let my Toyota dealer change the pan volume, and check the fluid level for you. Maybe they'll agree to do that after you describe your warning light, and your attempted diagnosis. Typically, dealer service will argue with owners wanting a fluid change prematurely.

Thanks, yes the "High Temp Warning" came on for a couple seconds and I let it cool at that point.

When I checked the fluid at 120F, there was overflow. So I'm thinking the level is correct if we don't have a cooler. I'll be bringing it to the dealer for a check regardless. Thanks again!

That's for sure the way to go in the meantime , however the trans will over heat again the next time he tows . Installing a External Cooler system is the ONLY real solution to the problem

Yes I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of an oil cooler. My 2010 was amazing and I was under the impression that the 2020 would be even that much better. Oh well, time to save up for a trans cooler.

Oh, yes, I completely agree that everyone that tows heavy with a 2019+ IS going to have transmission problems eventually without the cooler retrofit. This @PaulSidiro case is the perfect illustration. But...I didn't need to get into that, you had already covered it.

Is @PaulSidiro the only one on here that has had the over temp warning come up when towing ?

I don't know, maybe one other. There seems to be confusion on when the warning actually occurs. @PaulSidiro had almost all the parameters for a really good test of towing without a cooler and we saw what happened: Heavy (6000lbs), mountainous terrain, distance (400miles). The only thing missing was the ambient temp was only 80 degrees (must have been the mountains) and not 110 degrees!

Yes, it was in the mountains. So temps were hovering 80f-85f overall.

According to infostream the trans light will come on at 302F as already stated. If you do have the light come on I would be changing out the fluid. At that temperature the transmission fluid is already deteriorated. On my '20 I reached 245F pulling my 5.5K trailer in 5th. When I was installing my trans cooler I noticed the trans fluid had a slightly darker color to it and the truck only has 20,000 kilometers on it.

Same here , my fluid was darker when I dropped the pan and did the cooler install . Id say it was almost a Black Cherry Color :(

Yes that's a great point. I did sample the fluid and it doesn't smell burnt or have anything but a bright red color, nonetheless I will be changing it.

I wish Toyota used a full synthetic, and I'm not about to us anything but the dealer since I'm only at 4000 miles.
