Magnet18 2008 DC Build Thread

Ordered some wheel spacers from Titan, saw them recommended somewhere on the internet, apparently they are proudly made in Holland Michigan. Machined billet T6 6061 - made in America - 1.5" spacers, set of 4 for only $109 with free shipping. Sounds like worth a try for being 1/3rd the price of spidertrax.

Been busy with project whiteout - once I started turning amber leds white I couldn’t stop. Each button/switch type has its own challenges.

the info buttons are the easiest, 3mm leds easy to solder

the rocker buttons for bed light and dome light are also 3mm but Toyota opted to spot weld them. New ones could be soldered onto the spot weld but it took scratching the metal a bit to remove oxide, liberal application of flux, and a lot of heat

the AOB aftermarket switches are also this size very simple circuits. Cut a trace and soldered a jumper to make both leds always on.


the 4x4 selector was by far the hardest, particularly the desoldering, ripped two pads up on accident and had some very careful resoldering. I also got them all backwards the second time, the illumination + and - are clearly labeled on the pcb definitely do just one and apply 12v there to check

then there are the pushbuttons, tow/haul, traction control, and rcsa which are tiiiiiiiny 0603 size
I actually found these easier since you can desolder them with a blob that hits both sides and resoldering wasn’t that hard. Definitely practice!

but they were a little more blue than I liked so I ordered these on digikey and I’m happy with them. Honestly I might be imagining the difference it’s probably fine either way.

the blue chanzon Amazon LEDs in the gauge cluster are suuuuper bright btw, trying to decide if I’m gonna live with that or find some dimmer ones

I've seen it pop up a couple times, and for $120 getting keyless entry, pushbutton start, and remote start all in one seems like a great deal. Especially when the other options tend to be $300 and all the plug-n-play options are for 2010 plus
Mostly I'm already annoyed at fumbling around trying to get my keys out of my pocket when my hands are full, and with a baby soon it's a small thing but a huge hassle saver.

Looking good and saving me $300 over the OEM replacements. Fit/finish is "ok" had to trim a bit of flashing with a razor and I can tell the paint is soft and prone to scratching. But I have confirmed I love the look and if they ever fall off or something I'll consider the 10x more expensive OEM part

 

How difficult is it to do the diodes? Need specific temp gun/solder iron?

a set of hot tweezers would make it a 5 minute job if you want to spend the money for the tool

desoldering is a lot harder than soldering, if you’re new to it definitely get a practice kit to practice on

 

The cheap $300 armordillo ebay bumpers came back in stock last week, and I got myself one!
Review so far -
Packaging, awful, parts were all thrown in one big box to bounce around all the way from china, the mounting hardware bag broke open and some probably got lost, but things look ok I guess
I think it's the exact same thing as the armordillo bumper, looking at their site closer it looks like they're not an American company.
Looks and build quality look good so far, I'm excited to get this and the wheel spacers installed
