    Hello all -

I am in the process of picking up a ‘23 SR5 w/ TRD off crew max.
Test drove the truck, very impressed with pick up / handling and space.

I came across quite a bit negative online reviews about the new generation tundras (wind noise, flimsy interior, leaky windows, engine issues, infotainment issues etc).

I’m coming from a 2020 honda passport, which I purchased brand new and I’ve had a lot of issues with the honda, mostly electronic / infotainment related.

Wanted to know if any ‘23 SR5 owners have experienced major issues and if so, how responsive was Toyota with the repairs.

$60k for a fairly plain sr5 is quiet substantial amount , I would hate to get myself involved with anther lemon!

Any thoughts / suggestions is appreciated.

    Ara

If I was you then I would look for a 21 with very little miles on it and try for that. OR??????? wait a year until all the wrinkles get ironed out.:)

that is just my personal opinion.

My opinion is if you test drive and like then buy. I’m 100% happy with my ‘22 TRD OR and I’m not a Toyota fan boy. The last Toyota I had was a ‘07 Tacoma and have had several trucks in-between, from several brands. My wife’s vehicle is a 2020 Pilot so similar to your last. I’ll drive my truck 10x over before hopping in the Pilot.

    What’s wrong with stock?
Dude… it’s a solid truck. Stop listening to others and make your own decision. I’ve had mine a year an I’m still waiting for it to fall apart. It’s it fails, it’s under warranty. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.

I came from a Gen3 Taco - an upgrade from my Gen2 Taco. If you believe what you read the Taco Forum would tell you the Gen3 Taco is a POS - and the only one to own is anything but a Gen3. My Gen3 Taco ran circles around the Gen2. Some people just find it easy to bash - my seat squeaks, my suspension sucks, my mph sucks, I can't see over the hood, and on and on.

My Gen3 Tundra meets my expectations and I have no issues - warranty or other. I don't care for the Head Unit - but given time I will get use to it. You could spend a shit ton of cash on another brand - but they have issues too. We all have a warranty so if it is a warranty issue get it fixed and move on.

Life is too short - get what you want and enjoy it. The Gen3 Tundra is an amazing vehicle. The Gen 1, Gen2 and Gen2.5 have their issues too so don't let their owners fool you that they don't.

Edit: on a side note - I recently took a 1300 mile road trip. On one leg from Cody Wy to Yellowstone and back to Casper (speed of 55 mph max) I averaged 27 mpg over a 400mile stretch. I can't bitch about that. For the rest of the trip (Highway speeds of 70 - 80 mph) I averaged 23.5 mpg.

Don't fall for all the "I would look for a 2021" talk. I went down that road for a while and then purchased a 2023 and I LOVE IT! No noise issues, comfortable, smooth, amazing drivetrain, etc.

    Welcome to the forum!

Before you go fishing for answers from random strangers on the internet (i.e. us)...I would read through the forum first. Plenty of threads from people with good experiences and bad experiences alike. Asking us is, most likely, only get you the ol' 3rd Gen vs 2nd Gen debate.

Let me be as balacned as I can:

    • Want to see the bad? - There more than plenty of individual threads complaining about this & that (window trim, wind noise, infotainment issues, etc) for you to read through. If you want to get scared out of your mind...read the stickied engine failure thread or the TSB thread on all of known issues that Toyota is actively fixing.

    • Want to see the good? - Read through the "Where have you off roaded today?" thread showing plenty of happy owners having fun their 3rd Gen Tundras, or the 121 page GEN 3 (2022+) Wheels and Tires Photo thread where 3rd Gen owners excitedly share their new wheel & tire setup. Want more inspiration? Check out the 43 owners who are documenting their build out & modification journey (including my own truck) on 3rd Gen Builds (2022+) section.

Have I had issues with my 3rd Gen? Sure. I've had wind noise, my seat panel is cracked, the infotainment system was very quirky in the beginning, my truck had the random "knock" at startup until I had the TSB performed, and my fuel gauge every once in a blue moon thinks I got a free tank of gas (getting that TSB done at my next service appt). Do I still love my truck? Yup and I have a ton of fun with it. As evidenced by my build thread: Duster's Double Cab Build - The Daily Do-it-All

Whatever Tundra you buy...assuming you end up with one...let me give you a warm welcome to the Tundra community! We're a crazy bunch of enthusiasts who bicker (probably too much) amongst ourselves, but in the end...we're all brought together by our love for the Tundra. Enjoy!

The COVID period will not go down as top quality for anything. All the auto brands are encountering issues making old and new models. The supply chain for materials impacted everything. Inflation impacted everything. Remains to be seen if or when it rebounds. My hypothesis is vendors with high quality will return to form quicker than others.

I have the same model you do, SR5 TRD-Off Road. The only genuine has been that sometimes the blue/yellow lines from the backup cam disappear. The dealership did a factory reset on the software and that mostly fixed it. It's happened a couple times since then. Generally, after turning on and off the truck the issue goes away. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with the truck. If I had the $ I would have bought a limited. That and the blueprint color is quite hot, but that would be for any vehicle in blueprint.

You need to shop around. $60k for an SR5 is asinine. There are plenty of dealers discounting these trucks from 3-5k off all the way up to $9k off. It’s be worth it to buy remote and pay for shipping

That’s impressive gas mileage. I get 18-19mpg highway driving on my ‘20 passport.

Best price I got so far was $500 below MSRP, which comes out to little over $60k (tax included).

I will look into the option of buying remote - I appreciate the tip.

19.5mpg is what I average at about 90% highway, 10% small town. My truck is CM 4x4 stock off-road suspension and I generally cruise between 69-72 mph on highway with mostly empty truck. The truck will say it’s getting 22.5 if I hop on highway and shut down after one or two minutes after highway. Driving 55mph where I live on highway will get you run over. I think you can realistically expect about same as your Passport, until you go bigger on tires.

These trucks crush it, perform best under a load, liked to be worked. I feel like they are very special vehicles. Go drive and enjoy. Only time will tell if they all blow up at 100k, but I find that quite unlikely. Remember that people bitch and moan about everything.
