This has been a heated debate on here and I wanted to see some statistics on some of these failures. I will update the member list in the original post. This is not a thread for discussion and just want people commenting if the failure happened to you or someone you know on this site with a link to their thread on this topic.

To get as much information as possible if known:

    -Mileage that problem/failure happened:

    -Build date:

    -What actually happened:

    -Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder):

    -Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires):

    -Maintenance intervals:

More info on the vhechile would be helpful, for example 2023 Limited Off Road 4x4. And build date. That would help narrow down if it's isolated to specific builds, is an isolated event, something more common across all builds, or even a potential user error.

I as told to post my story on here. Toyota has since repurchased my truck.
I flew to Florida to pick up my 2022 Limited 4x4 tundra. Got it on January 10th 2022. Drove it for a year and a few days. Loved my truck had zero issues. A few recalls but that’s to be expected. January 13th 2023 had just 44,000 miles on it. I was turning into my driveway. As I a have it a little gas to make the turn I heard a knocking sound coming from the engine area. Being unsure what I was hearing I pulled into the driveway. I put it in park and got out. I had my son give it some gas while I recorded the sound. As the engine increased in RPMs the sound got louder. I immediately tried to turn around and take it to the dealership. I made it .5 miles down the road and the Christmas tree lights and warnings came on. It told to find a safe place to stop the engine was shutting off. I pulled over and everything turned off. I restarted the truck and drove it back up the hill and parked it by my driveway and called Toyota to come pick up their truck. I was told by the dealership there was another one doing the exact same thing as mine at their dealership. They suspect crank bearing failure. Unsure of what that meant I asked and was told it needed a new engine. Needless to say I got pretty pissed. They gave me a rental and I had it for 81 total days. Toyota didn’t want to put a new engine in my truck only wanted to rebuild my current engine. Also no extension on warranty or anything. I didn’t think this was right. I asked them to repurchase the vehicle and here I am.

@ryanwgregg is there a way to view the results of this form? I’m curious if the engine failures have occurred in both ‘22 and ‘23 model year trucks?

Want to address this and why. There are plenty of other threads for chatting about this particular topic. I would like to keep this thread for just 1) what happened 2) mileage 3) other details.

This way we have a thread that is just tracking failure and what caused them. We all know this could have been a 25 page thread already...easily.

    1) This happened May 13th. I was going to work in the morning and the truck shut off displaying a message saying,"Engine Stopped, Steering power low". I pulled over and tried to start it up again with no luck. I let the truck sit for 15 to 20 minutes while i looked in the engine bay to see if i could see any obvious problems and found none. Got back in the truck and it started right up. Drove all of my work day with no problems or noises, everything drove like normal. Headed home at the end of my day and got 3/4 of a mile from my house and the truck shut off again but immediately started back up. Drove another half mile and it shut off again, so i pulled over and let it sit for a few minutes. Started the truck again and drove home but this time with a knocking sound. Took it to the dealer and in about 3 1/2 weeks short block was replaced. The cause was rod/crank bearing failure. Drives like new now.

    2) Engine failed at 22,915 miles

    3) Dealership in Macon, Georgia was great. The whole process went smoothly. They were aware of the bearing problems beforehand.

Add me to the list of "My new truck suddenly died" people

    2022 Tundra Capstone
    Picked up July 7, 2022
    14480 miles
One long road trip (~2400 miles round trip)
Minimal towing (2 trips with lawnmowers on flatbed trailer and one electric golf cart for servicing)
Mostly short trips (I work from home, and most days my longest trip is a mile to the gas station for a Coke)
No mods or anything. It's a Capstone and a Pavement Princess. Why mod? :)

Coming home from a short trip, I was turning the corner and it shuddered. Got "Hybrid system" warning light, and then every other warning light known to man. Engine died and refused to start. Towed to dealer. Still diagnosing, but likely bearing failure.

The dreaded engine failure hit me as well on vacation over the Fourth of July 2023. Went in for lunch came out started the engine and it made awful noises and seized up. Finally after waiting three weeks and the tenth call to the dealership they said the engine is shot. He’s trying to get a long block from Toyota but they want to give them a short block and have them rebuild it. This is a small dealership with limited resources. I’m in the process of retaining an attorney because I know this is going to be a shit show sooner than later. November 2021 build 28,000 miles oil changed every 5000 no heavy towing no off-road.

Just joined this forum. It's been a great resource! Add me to the list of blown engines.

    1. 7/27/23 Engine failure while driving. 60 mph country road, and dash lights lit up and got message that engine shut down and to pull over safely. Could not get engine to turn over and called for tow.
    2. 20,500 miles
    3. 2022 Tundra TRD, purchased new 12/20/21. BUILD DATE 11/5/21. Never towed anything with the truck. Dealer lowered the oil pan to discover metal shavings. Toyota proposing short block rebuild. Will update when I learn more.

I have a 2022 Tundra TRD Pro. I had 12k miles on it when I was on vacation in Idaho. We heard a knocking sound in the engine and had a local mechanic look at truck. They found metal in oil. Towed to Teton Toyota and here was the diagnosis he emailed me. “The vehicle was towed into the dealership with a complaint of a knocking noise in the engine and potential metal contamination through the block. My technician removed a sample of the oil and did in fact find metal contamination in the oil. He then removed the oil pan and found metal debris in the oil pan. After additional tear-down it was determined there was a failure in at least one of the main bearings in the engine. All service records are up to date and it has been determined the cause is a material defect in the bearing requiring replacement of the engine “short block” under Toyota Factory warranty. All parts have been ordered, with an estimated parts receipt date of 09/27/2023 and an estimated repair completion date of 10/06/2023. The date is subject to change pending any additional backorder parts delays.” The truck was towed in July. This is the second issue I have had with this truck since I have owned. I also had to replace all the tires and have a shop outside of Toyota re do the alignment correctly. I have owned Tundra Trucks for 20 years. This will be the last one I own based on the lack of Toyotas help or support.

Wishing I was not a member of the blown engine club!! 22 Limited TRD 23k. Saw my oil pressure bouncing the other day. Drive straight to the dealer, no warning lights, nothing. Pulled into the dealer's garage and the engine was ticking. 3 days later they tell me yes you are correct the engine is blown. I have a loaner Tundra for the dealer but had no idea my truck would be torn apart and sit exposed until backorder pieces arrive. Most of you that are going through this probably haven't seen what your truck looks like as Toyota tells them to take it apart to show.

2022 Tundra sr5 crew cab TRD engine failure. Truck had no codes but nasty rattle. It was towed to the dealership and a number of pistons failed. 31k miles

Wasnt getting answers from the dealership today. I have been reading more and more about how many affected by these engine failures. I wanted to know how long engine parts and engines are backordered for roughly, the dealership would not let tell me. Well I decided to call Toyota myself to get some answers. I spoke with a Toyota representative and told them that having a loyal toyota customer who has a major issue that cant be fixed in a couple days or a week and keep making payments on a truck that is going to sit for months is extremely bad customer service. We arent talking about something minor this is someone means of transportation and making a living and to have them wait that long and make them pay for a rental at the customers expense is 100% unfair and bad business practice. I told her I wanted Toyota to buy my truck back or take it on a smokin trade because I will contact the BBB, Attorney general and or lawyer. She informed me that they take issues like this very serious and are good about buying vehicles back when there is a situation like this. She informed me that a case manager would be calling me within 24 hours to come to a remedy. Can anyone give me any insight on experience they have had dealing with Toyota directly instead of going through the dealership and how many have gone the same route and what was the overall answer

didn’t drive for 3 days then heard loud knocking in park/idle and low speeds
    No codes

Diagnosed by Toyota as one of the connector rods broke in the engine

Dealer told me I’m getting a whole new engine on warranty. Replacement Tacoma in the meantime… ETA unknown

    This is BullDurham.

Just joined the forum and was asked post to this thread since I'm another statistic of this issue.

    -Mileage that problem/failure happened:

    -What actually happened:

    -Vehicle usage (towing/off-roading/pavement pounder):

    -Vehicle modifications (tune/geared/tires):
