Hey all wanted to share some information with the community and see if anyone else has had an engine failure.
2022 tundra limited 4x4 bought in February and about 16k miles on it.
went to run a small errand today and on the drive back home I started hearing some metal on metal noises coming from the engine bay. I turned into a side street right away aiming for a clear area to pull off the road and starting losing power, rpm began to bump up and down and lost almost all oil pressure. I turned the car off right away and towed it to the nearest dealer. waiting to hear back Monday. I also checked the fluids and everything was at the right levels. I do my oil changes at 5k miles and use top of the line oil. I've been driving toyota pick ups for 15 years and have never been let down but I guess there's a first time for everything. I did notice this week while starting the vehicle before i would head to work in the morning there wouldnt be any smoke but a strong odour as if the car was straight piped. The car had all the other small issues from shutting down at low speeds and saying power steering fluid is low to slamming on the brakes with the parking assist.

Its a brand new drivetrain. Its not Northern Tundra's fault but you do have to expect that some unfortunate souls will be part of the development process this first year of production.

I was under the impression this the tacoma engine just with a compression change for the turbos?
My tacomas have been rock solid over the years

They're not identical in operation. The only Lexus that carried this drivetrain is the flagship LS 500, which is made exclusively in Japan. The Tundra, along with its V35A, is made in the US

What ended up happening? Mine sounds like metal on metal when I start it up and had a pull over and call the dealership message come on today. It started with a rough idling and burnt oil smell

Where is everyone else's oil pressure? Mine is typically only at a 1/4 of the gauge which concerned me. Usually Toyotas are at the 1/2 way mark

Do these new engines use that ridiculous 0w16 oil like my wife’s 19’ Rav4 or is it still 0w20?

Mine stays at 1/4 as well. Keep in mind that this is relative to the overall pressure rating of the gauge. I’m guessing now that the engine is turbo they’ve broadened the range of the gauge, so normal operating pressure is likely the same as always.

Good to hear it seems normal. A little concerned the pump may be undersized relative to the additional flow required for the turbo.

Although possible I would think it highly unlikely the automotive engineers would make a major mistake on or overlook that calculation.

Doesn't really matter. Toyota is using this crap just please the EPA/CAFE standards. Its been shown that this watered down oil is only used in the US basically. If you look at other countries, thicker oil is used, all the way to 40 or 50w. I switched over to 10W-30 on my 20 Tundra since first or second oil change. Engine sounds so much better.

You know you don't have to use 0-16 in the Rav. Its strictly a fuel economy thing. 0-16 is difficult to find in my area so I've been using 0-20 for 40k plus miles in my Rav with zero issues.

Yeah I know, next change i’m putting 0w20. I put 5w30 in my tundra and it’s a bit quieter. My wife’s engine sounds like it has marbles in it sometimes and I can’t help but think the thin oil doesn’t help.

I wonder if the cause was an oil pump failure. I saw someone on Facebook report that happened at 26k miles and subsequently blew the engine. Anecdotal of course, but could make sense for how you described the failure occurring.

I think this is the first one I have heard of. :notsure: Sucks nonetheless.

Hopefully we get a reply and hopefully a warranty claim that takes care of the OP’s truck.

Hey all just an update. First dealer refused to offer me a rental at all and I didn't want to waste arguing with them. I then towed it to the mega dealer I bought it from in the city. They promised to give me a rental as soon as toyota agrees to warranty it. I had to gather my receipts for my oil changes and submit them. Service manager says it's bottom end for sure but doesn't seem to think it's a spun bearing like I do. As soon as toyota approves it he will do a teardown and I will do my best to get pictures and paperwork.
