Just had a random thought as I was poking around, if you are honestly looking at a large motorhome like that, why not consider a vacation home/cabin in an area you like? Not like a huge house, but something that would be comfortable, hold value, and always have a spot to park.

If you wanted to travel you could still use the current truck set up, so you're not losing that for yourself. If the Mrs. wants home level comfort, does it really matter if it's on wheels or not? Pick a favorite place like a lake, desert town, mountain area, etc. and see what a small home would run you. Might be able to get off cheaper than some of those bus size RVs.

A good thought, but unfortunately not that simple. Almost all of the overlanding I’ve been doing is either solo or with the kids. The wife doesn’t really like climbing up a ladder into a tent. Also, a big issue with trips is that she is a survivor of multiple lung blood clots. A long term problem related to this is that she cannot sit long in a vehicle before needing to stand up and walk around. This makes long distance trips such as Tundras to Sedona problematic for her in a truck. When she and the daughter came up with the motor coach idea, I was skeptical. However agreed to really look into it.

After some serious digging I realized the benefits outweighed the cons. Would also make her traveling much easier. Our timing was perfect and the stars aligned for what I think was a deal of a lifetime. Ended up getting a ‘22 model year for close to 40% off. Ended up finding out that ownership was scared of a potential recession with several ‘23 models on order and didn’t want a lot full of inventory. Was able to apply a rather large down payment that was saved from the sale of our last boat for a large purchase like this and financed the remaining that was about that of a new Tundra.

We have already done quite a bit of traveling in it and I have to say it’s pretty cool. Already got on the mods and immediately upgraded the suspension which is much cheaper than upgrading Tundra suspension.

So, I still use the truck for solo and outings with the Son, but family trips are a lot easier in the motorcoach. The wife can now stand and walk around without having to pull over every hour. The daughter has also commented that it reminds her of our travels on a boat. Sleeping in hearing the roar of the engine(s) and the gentle motion back and forth just as the boat did.

    That's awesome!

Have you created a thread on the Camping Dreadnought? You should, and tag me in it! Be sure to include lots of pics and the details on your upgrades.

    That thing is pretty sweet.

First thing I thought when I saw the slide out, though

You should definitely do a detailed "build thread" for it. Show us the cool features, give a tour, and chronicle the adventures!

thanks. I like your idea of a build page for it. It does have some nice features to it. The modern motor coaches have really advanced and I’m not referring to the high end luxury models.

At least I didn’t have to buy a new jack to upgrade the suspension for it has built in hydraulic legs for leveling. So I was able to lift each wheel with the built in leveler. However I did have to shell out for a 10 ton jack stand for safety. Not cheap and weights like 75-80 lbs.,

@GODZILLA Good thing I didn’t wait for the Redtail RTC. Just received an email from them stating that they are transitioning their business model from stand alone RTC/RTT building to Van customizations with their RTC.

Their demo vehicle was the owners personal Expedition that was modified a good bit. I thought it was weird when they posted a lot of social media of them customizing a Sprinter Van. Now they are selling the Expedition and use the finished sprinter as their demo.

So now all they are going to do is Van builds and all existing orders/reservations are cancelled with a full deposit refund.

    Kinda worked out for me.

So, just as an update to the "build" I have here; if I can make it pan out financially I'll likely be downsizing to a Tacoma TRD Pro. I don't want to type it all out again, so here's the links to the most coherent process I wrote out for it. Apologies for the rambling and such, but anyone who follows the LIVE thread knows how it goes. :p You can just click the first link and follow the thread, or just use each link in succession to get the highlights where I laid out my thoughts.

Still in the air about color(Solar Octane, Electric Lime, or White), manual or auto, but pretty solid on the Pro if I can swing it. Thoughts? Comments? Things I might not be thinking of that could swing me toward keeping the Tundra or definitely getting a Taco?

I think you’ll get the regular crowd who “hates” on the Tacoma, but I think the Tacoma is a very capable truck. My son has an army green TRD Sport converted to off-road and I drive it all the time. Actually drive it more than my Tundra because it’s much more nimble and easier to drive. The iKamper mini will fit perfectly on it. So no complaints from me

That's some good insight. Those who have driven both don't generally hate the Taco unless they had car seats or towed with it.

Do you have any pics of your son's taco? Is he on TW or anything?

    BOOOOOOOO!!!!!:p

Get a Frontier, way better truck. Taco chassis is literally 17 years old. Drum rear brakes. Jacked up ergonomics, etc. Have had a few, 4 actually, so have some experience with the taco. Never had the camry motored one though. Too bad they got rid of the 4.0

The Frontier chassis is older than the Tacoma's. The body is new, but the frame is the same as the old one. Less capable offroad suspension, better seat position from what I hear, little more power, better automatic transmission. I've been watching comparison vids, and the new and shiny is almost always picked as the "best" but I've been paying attention to how much the driver is being jostled on the road, and it's significantly less in the TRD Pro. The suspension is just less bouncy and does a better job of keeping the wheels on the ground. Older doesn't mean worse. I bought a Tundra when it was a 12 year old design specifically because it's old and proven. Both of these trucks have that kinda going for them.

That said, I 100% plan to test drive the Frontier. I dig the look of the Pro 4X, it has the rear locker, and the power sounds nice. I've been in the Taco, though, and I liked it in its most basic, pumpkin spice, iteration. I liked it a lot. If I like the Frontier as much, I may go that way. nothing is carved in stone, except that I am exploring my options.

Just as a quick demo (This video so far has just been the guy in the frontier talking. Not much comparing) this shows both trucks doing more than most drivers ever would. Watch it a couple times and look at how much less the Taco nose dives. That's purely the suspension. It should be timestamped at the right spot, but in case it isn't 21:13 is where you can skip to for the point I'm making.

    https://youtu.be/UeBJWrNBDBM?t=1274

    Both do totally fine.

Watch a few minutes after and they do a very mild obstacle and the off road difference is more pronounced.

the new Frontier looks good imo. Nicer than Tacoma. I'm waiting to see next gen Tacoma details though. I want to get a smaller truck at some point.

When I decided to buy a truck, I originally wanted a Tacoma. Coming from a 4Runner, I expected the Tacoma to be a 4Runner with a bed. It’s more like a Camry with a bed. The seats are on the floor like a sedan, and the vertical openness and spaciousness of the 4Runner are not there at all. I was really surprised. It quickly became apparent that the Tacoma could not be a remote camping and adventure mobile for my family. But for parties of one or two, it’s a different story.

The Tundra is so nimble for its size with aftermarket or Pro suspension. Tight turning radius, excellent visibility, with a short, sloping nose that is easy to see over. Yeah, the fuel economy is worse. But built Tacomas are almost just as bad. (Who drives a stock Taco?)

If I had to step up to an HD truck for towing, I could see dailying a Taco. People who love them love them. I get it. Seems like a backwards move from the Tundra though (less space, towing, power) unless you really need to fit down some tight trails or use compact city parking a lot.

If most of your adventuring will be pulling a trailer, are you sure you want to downsize? Even people who love their Tacomas don’t enjoy towing with them. Do you need it to be trail-ready and nimble when you already have a really awesome UTV? Just some thoughts.

Stock for stock, I think the Frontier might be worth considering. But if you’re going to build it, the aftermarket for the Tacoma is unrivaled.

The Frontier frame has been improved over the years unlike the Taco. Due diligence is paramount. The 22 got even a more beefed up frame. Same great frame but made even more beefy. Fully boxed btw. All Frontier's now come with a Dana 44 out back. I had a Taco. This Frontier is definitely built tougher. I'd like the Pro4X but my SV is taking me everywhere I want to go. The Pro 4X isn't worth another $10k. I'll do my own mods for a lot cheaper.

If I make the move I don't want to have to do more than add a rack for my tent and some armor. I'm over $10K in mods to the Tundra and it's about how I'd like it. Could have bought a pro and not modded. Just stuff I've learned for what suits me.

I intend on driving a Frontier to see how I like it, though.

You can cut the crossbars on the Caliraised rack and use it on the new minitruck.

The tacos are gonna get a facelift here in the next year (allegedly). Don’t know if that makes you wanna jump or wait.

If I were to buy the current gen taco I’d skip the auto. I owned one for a few years and it was the worst driving vehicle I’ve ever had. I like the looks and the agility of the smaller truck, but driving dynamics were just horrible.

I didn’t mind the 2019 TRD Off Road I test drove. But I would not want to tow out West with it, at even half its capacity.

Good to know. Did you have a stick or an auto?

I wasn't sure I could chop the rack, so that's good news.

Not sure I want the next gen, and certainly not the first year. I'd rather avoid a turbo, especially a 4, otherwise I'd be looking at the Ranger or the new Colorado/Canyon.

Can you share a little more on the driving dynamics? What was it that made it awful? I know the transmission tends to gear hunt, but S mode or a remap could help that, maybe?

@ColoradoTJ just scared me pretty good with his link to a bunch of failures. :( I have to really consider the Frontier now. It's just not as good off road, so I was leaning more to the 'Yota. As a single vehicle guy, reliability is paramount, so if it's really risky to do a Taco, I can't justify it.

Auto. I almost pulled the trigger anyway (wasn’t towing anything at the time), but I couldn’t get over the interior space vs the 4Runner, and when I took a look underneath it, the rear diff had been seeping oil around the bolts something fierce. I told the salesguy about it, and he could not have cared any less at all. I’ve seen that on Tundras, too, so not necessarily a strike against the Tacoma alone.

A buddy of mine bought a Tacoma after asking me a million questions about my Tundra. He bought it to pull a small trailer. Absolutely could not stand the gear hunting and high revving. So he traded it in. On a Ridgeline.:facepalm::facepalm:

He swears the Ridgeline tows his little camper much better. :anonymous:

Admittedly, all those failures posted to Tacomaworld seem alarming but there are a couple things that need to be taken into consideration. First of all is just how many of those motors are out there, not just the crazy amount of Tacomas sold but also the various other Toyotas and Lexus running that motor. If there truly was widespread common engine failure you would know about it besides on the forums. Second thing to take into consideration is people are quick to complain and or post issues but not so much when things are great. I myself am guilty of not posting reviews on Amazon very often unless I had a negative experience and the same goes for Tacomas. Obviously the chance to have an issue does exist but I don't think it's as common as it may seem.

Good points, and I am not being super reactionary. I just had no idea of the failures at all. The engine being in other vehicles is less of a consolation, because a different use application can affect reliability in a big way.

The nice thing is that I don't NEED to get anything. I can drive my Tundra forever if I need to, so I have time to research.

The single biggest thing is that I'm not wanting to increase my debt. If I can't swing a deal that is really close to a straight swap, I'll keep the Tundra and be happy. :)
