*for the front seats, nothing compares to the rear legroom in a CM.

    Tundra front hr/lr : 39.7"/42.5"
    Forrester front hr/lr: 41.2"/43.3"
    Pretty surprising numbers.

Hmmmm..... In my Tacoma research I am finding somethings that are making me think. :monocle:

The obvious choice for a Taco (buying new) is the TRD Pro or the TRD Off Road, right? These net you the off road goodies, BUT only in the automatic. If you get a stick you lose the multi-terrain-mode (MTM), crawl control, and the ETC, which all kinda makes sense given that you have manual control of the gears. Both have ATRAC and the locking rear diff. You get a little better gearing in the manual, at the price of a little worse MPG. Auto is $50,625 MSRP (includes delivery) and the stick is $47,920. That's a straight savings of $2705 at the cost of some MPG and convenience.

I'm torn. My buddy's SR with none of the off road goodies did just fine with an automatic transmission going up and down a trail that had plenty of pucker in the Tundra. The Taco felt way more stable because of the lower center of gravity, and the smaller size was shockingly apparent. I blew that off when choosing the Tundra over the Taco. "Tundra can go wherever a Taco can" I told myself, and maybe it can, but not nearly as easily or gracefully.

I would consider a Trail Edition because it has the locker, but it's only available in an auto, and if I get an auto I'd rather to the Off Road and get the terrain modes and cameras. Built it out with top package for NAV, Leather, MTM, and such, and it sits at $45,640 in an auto or $43,370 in a stick with the same package. Thing is, the advanced tech package loses the MTM in a stick so I don't know what it could be adding beyond the regular technology package that is almost a grand less. So, going down a package for that puts the TRD OR in a really loaded up position with the stick at a $42,470 price point.

    ________________________________________________
    ________________________________________________

    TLDR:

    TRD Pro Auto
    • $50,625 MSRP
    • All the goodies
    TRD Pro Stick
    • $47,920
    • Lose MTM, Crawl Control, and 1 MPG
    TRD Off Road Auto
    • $45,640
    • All the Pro goodies besides the Pro Skid plate, Fox Shocks, nice/light wheels, Lift, and Upper Control Arms... you know all the stuff I'd have to spend money to add.
    TRD Off Road Stick
    • $42,470
    • Same as the auto minus the MTM and Crawl Control

I bought my Tundra for $41,XXX and I've checked KBB that puts it around $37K-38K trade in, cross referenced that with 2019s with 30K-50K miles selling for $45K-$49K. This doesn't account for my better wheels, tires, lift, and armor, however, I still owe about $13,400. I'm not thinking a dealership is going to hook me up with a Pro in a straight swap, but maybe if they see the value of the mods as something they can use to inflate their used price. Speaking with a buddy he brought me around to my true financial allowances for the swap, and I'd be willing to do my truck plus $5000 to get into a Pro. What are your thoughts? Think I can pull it off? Which trim and trans do you think I might be able to get if I pull the trigger?

I always use Edmonds to find out vehicle specs so you would think they would have a standard way of measuring every vehicle the same.
    Not sure on SAE though.

Looking at all this broken out I have to at least reconsider the Frontier. I'll be checking prices, options, etc. and comparing. I think the Taco looks better, and the interior has a better aesthetic, but the Frontier packs a bit more power.

Well you know I am biased towards automatic transmissions so I think my input wouldn't be fair on that. Also I can't remember, does your truck have aftermarket suspension? The reason I ask is because you are used to performance of an aftermarket suspension the TRD offroad suspension would definitely be a let down. It's not horrific or unsafe or anything, but there is lots of body roll, break dive, and it's fairly easy to hit the bump stops. Obviously that can be fixed with aftermarket but if you didn't really want to mess with that then the TRD Pro would be the better choice. As far as packages I don't like the idea of a sunroof so I personally wouldn't go for the premium off-road package even though it also adds nice things like better sound system and leather seats. I would say go for the technology package though because you get body color matched bumpers, backup sensors, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, and heated mirrors. As far as the crawl control and locker stuff, it all depends on how hardcore your off-roading is as to whether you need them or not. Perhaps if you don't need the fancy off-road technology even a fully optioned SR5 would be a good choice? Lastly when it comes down to whether you should do it I'm sure you know what my opinion would be :D

Tyler, I appreciate all your input on it, as you have had both a Tundra and a current Taco. It's an invaluable perspective.

I do have aftermarket suspension, and that is part of why I lean toward the Pro. What I have found so far, nose dives on braking are just part of having a Taco. Maybe because they only do drums in the rear? If I got the Pro the only things I would have to add would be additional armor and sliders. Beyond that, it's already at the level my Tundra is, so it'd feel like more of a lateral move. I agree on the moonroof, but if you want leather you have to get one, so I could suffer through it. Had one on my WRX and it wasn't awful, but I didn't use it much. I don't really need a better sound system either, but the

    Must have deal beakers:
    • BSM with RCTA. I've been saved from 4 different idiots who were blasting too fast through parking lots in the last few years. The RCTA is worth it's weight in gold for me.
    • Locking rear diff. This is the only off road goody that I "must" have in the swap. The MTM and crawl control are neat and I would play with them, but they aren't necessarily needs.
    • LED high and low beams. I can't go back to the dark, man.
    • Power driver seat.
    • White, Electric Lime, or Solar Octane. No other colors are of interest, and if it's Lunar Rock I'd rather be gut shot and have the wound f**ked by a viagra fueled double arm amputee who hasn't seen a woman for 5 years.
    Really really want:
    • Pro wheels. It will save me from having to buy wheels down the road.
    • Skid, cheap enough I can add to any that I choose.
    • Leather. Toyota's leather is super durable, easy to clean, and it's good for resale.
The thing I am running into on the build and price tool is that the technology package clearly states that it has the BSM (plus other stuff) but the advanced technology package only mentions the rear parking sonar. The MTM is in the advanced, so that is it's appeal, but IDK if it also gets the BSM that is a must. The two packages are exclusionary toward one another though. Can't have both. I would assume the advances has the same stuff, but IDK. There is nothing on the site that explicitly shows both BSM and MTM together.

I could drop the TRD OR package down to one without the Premium(leather) if I knew for certain the Advanced tech package has the BSM with RCTA. That would put an auto trans TRD OR at $43,330 and a stick at $39,745. Those would both be much more likely as straight across trades, but they also aren't really offering anything more than the Tundra already has. I would struggle to not feel like I was downgrading, and I certainly wouldn't let a dealership have my exhaust, wheels, tires, and armor in that trade. They get it as basic as I could strip it down without a spring compressor.

Obviously I'd much rather get a TRD Pro and not have to strip the mods. If a stock 2019 with similar mileage to mine is selling for $44K-ish then I know they could tack on another $5-$7K for the lift, wheels, tires, and armor. I can dream, can't I?

Am I the only one completely satisfied with his truck and don’t give two sniffs about anything else?

Me saying that is amazing cuz this is my first vehicle I haven’t gotten the itch to sell. It will be 3 years next month and I’m as satisfied as ever.

Now if Toyota made a HD… oh baby!

@LarryDangerfield one other thing that is not an option in a manual is the smart handles and push button start. That boggles my brain because my WRX was a stick and it had both of those. The only thing you couldn't get in the stick as a factory option was a remote start, which is also missing in the stick Taco. Knowing the auto adds all that makes it's price bump a little more understandable. Still not sure I wouldn't just prefer the stick, though.

That IS weird that it doesn't say the advanced gets the RCTA. Also every dealership is different but so far when I've traded my vehicles the aftermarket parts have made absolutely no difference besides on my first Tacoma where he considered it a TRD off road (it was an SR5) because of all the changes I made. Otherwise they always said stuff added no value whatsoever

I absolutely love push button start. No keys jangling and slapping around when off road and just not having to take them out of my pocket is plain convenient, especially during winter with gloves.

Oh, I know that is how they operate, but I would spell it out that they don't get the mods unless I get a pro. If my value isn't above a stock version, I'm pulling the mods and they are getting a stock truck.

I love my Tundra, by my life and goals are different now. Put yourself in my shoes for a moment: Single, no kids, seldom have a passenger besides a 20 pound Pug, done with people's shit, traveling 300-700 miles minimum every other week to go see family/friends, enjoying camping but no use for a camper, only towing a 12 foot tandem axle utility trailer on occasion with nothing bigger than a 2000 pound load on it. In that mind set, if you could swap to a slightly more efficient, better suited to your hobbies, brand new Tacoma Pro in exchange for a well loved, but bigger than needed SR5 Tundra with 35Kish miles, would you consider it?

It's just about different needs. I totally understand keeping a TDR Pro Tundra when you've got kids/family, tow a travel trailer, etc., but swapping a used SR5 for a new Pro Taco that still fulfills all the recreational needs has an appeal. If the numbers don't work I will keep my Tundra and I'll be damn happy with it. I love it. But if it does work out I'll love the Taco and be forever grateful for the Tundra, because it brought me into this crazy community that I enjoy so much.

I can't remember if you mentioned it or not, are you going for an access cab long bed? Or a double cab short bed? Unfortunately they don't offer the double cab long bed in the Pro configuration....

My wife’s got a 2017 touring in flat 4 - it’s been a great car for her (88k on the odo). My older daughter has a 2008 with 240k on it. We just did the head gaskets a couple months ago, but otherwise the thing has been great

    Trying not to mod it
The Pro is only available as a double cab with the short bed. If I were to go TRD OR with an auto I would consider the longer bed, but I don't mind the short bet. It's not a lot smaller than my Crewmax's bed.
