I don't know, I thought the Tundra was purchased because for family use. I feel my role as a parent is to support my kids. I can't imagine expecting my kid to go buy a temporary vehicle for intermittent use when I've got one in the driveway. The extra insurance, registration etc doesn't add up to me. Also, what if the temp vehicle breaks down and my kid is stranded or worse? My father was a very strict hardliner, didn't work out that well, easier IMO to just go with the flow IMO.

I can't imagine providing for my kid's needs if he was stupid enough to sell a perfectly good vehicle that he used regularly so he could put a deposit down on a joke that Elon Musk is trolling everyone with that may or may not be produced in the next few years.

He should have at least kept the GMC until there was a sign of getting his cyber truck in the near future.

    :rofl:Welcome to the internet.
In my defense I did provide a thoughtful response first. Remove the sarcastic "A Good Dad" signature and I think it is actually a helpful response, sundog pointed out a good option.
And do you really think the OP was looking for help or just came here for validation?

Parenting never ends and there is no one size fits all. Dad can easily say " look son, maybe I wasn't perfect but I never gave up and I am still trying to catch up, so please try to be mindful and see from my perspective...." . I truly think both need to meet up at the park for an evening and enjoy a six pack with meaningful conversation. Might take several meetings to get there and it will give dad more ammunition if junior doesn't offer to bring the beer the second or third time. Go for it dad, make it happen!!!

I think that you are looking at this from the wrong angle. What the hell is your wife doing taking his side. Does she not realize that he is using her against you? This would piss me off more than anything. Your son is not 16 asking to use a vehicle that he cannot afford.

My best friend would let anybody borrow a tool. If you ask more than once, it was "sounds like you need to buy your own".

A non-sarcastic cheers to you - for not taking offense to my comment. Seriously. I was expecting you to hit back pretty hard.

Who knows OP's intentions...maybe a bit of both (validation/help)? Probably validation though. Either way, it's easy for us all to be armchair therapists & tell him what we'd do (I chimed in myself, btw). There's years of family history/dynamics only OP knows that should heavily influence his decision.

One more thing OP, you know that your life has to be pretty rough when your dad does not let you borrow his brand new truck that is impossible to buy, so that you can take your imported Italian motorcycle to one of the top race tracks 200 miles away.

Every situation is different but in this case, his son has more than enough means to get his Duc anywhere he wants. Sounds like he is better off financially than most. His kid getting butt hurt, then getting mom involved, shows the kid is entitled. An yeah no one borrows my truck either but I'm willing to help when I can.

No one can borrow your truck because it's currently acting as a storage rack and you're too lazy to unload it. Let's check back in with you in 4 years and see what happens when your favorite child asks to borrow it.

Really, why am I the only one in this family who sees it though, that's the million dollar question.
I have two good friends who always listen and always agree; Dr. Bourbon and Dr. Cigar.

Put a camper shell on the truck. It will end the motorcycle hauling requests.

My guess is that mom coddled too much and has that guilt inside. My youngest was going this route with my wife when he was around six. I saw it coming because I am the youngest as well. I spent two years trying to get her to change, it was tough but the babying and coddling has stopped. Although, he is quite a little shit now. Don't beat yourself up just stick to yours guns and take the high road. I would go as far as teasing them about it but I am a bit of an asshole.

There is far more to all of this, the truck is a small percentage of the entire package. The two have lost years. Time for them to get to know one another in depth.

I think of all the responses in this thread - the fact you choose this one to quote sheds a bit more light on the situation. If you resent your son as an adult because he didn’t struggle enough growing up I wouldn’t expect him to ask you for anything moving forward just as he indicated to your wife. Also couldn’t help but notice you liked the u-haul rental post - if he has the means, why should you help him, right? That’s probably how he feels…

Just put a camper shell on it and problem solved. The motorcycle won't fit anymore and the shell is "a real pain to take off and put back on".

It's gotten me out of moving pianos twice
