YETI COOLERS: are they really that cool...or is it all a bunch of hype??

OK...I lied.....Final sum up....Day 7 no more ice except for a small piece. Blue ice semi frozen/thawed but still cool enough to keep brewskies cold enough to drink. 7 freakin days. The Sub Zero is a new kid on the block, reasonably priced but very competitive if not better than coolers that cost much more. I'm leaving my last two rib eyes in the cooler overnight for day 8. Will consume tomorrow.

I suppose a better title for this thread should be "Are high end pricey roto molded coolers really worth the hype?"
IMHO...yes, if you really need one.

I appreciate it brother, but my wife pulled the trigger on a Pelican 50qt for me for Father's Day! Where in PA are you? I drive up a couple times a year to Cranesville/ Albion.

New guy from SoCal here. I pulled the trigger on a Yeti about a year ago and it's been an excellent cooler. Pulled it out of the truck 6 days after returning home from a desert excursion and still had ice cubes floating around. Plus, it makes an excellent bench rest.

You have a good wife! I am in Eastern PA - in between Philly and Allentown. I get out to western PA in Pittsburgh for business, and we drive out to friends in Johnstown every 4th of July.

Mat, I have been reading up on the Zub Zero, and I'm impressed with the price and colors they offer. I'm looking for a smaller cooler, and there 23qt cooler priced @ $129 is a great deal for that type of cooler. I'm digging the blue with graphite in it. Was leaning towards Ozark Trail, but this is a better cooler 360 and for $30 more it's a no brainer. Thanks for the review.

Thanks Ron. I bought my Yeti several years ago. I didn't buy it for a status symbol. I bought it because it was the best at the time. Hell, where my property is, there is no one to see what cooler brand I'm using. As I mentioned before.. most cooler posts are anecdotal. I tried to do a reasonable test with my new Sub Zero that anyone could copy. The Sub Zero passed my test. If it didn't ..I would have returned it in a heartbeat. I truly believe that most roto molded coolers will perform quite nicely as I have mentioned before. How much do you want to pay??? Do you want a "cool" looking cooler or a cooler that does what it's supposed to do without all the frills??

50qt Pelican got delivered. That's a 2 liter of Pepsi for size comparison. Next time I go to work I'll top it off with ice and test it.

A lot of Yeti fans say they purchased Yeti because they want to buy the "original creator" of the rotomolded cooler, that they do not accept knock offs, per se.

What they don't know is that Yeti wasn't the first one to come out with the rotomolded cooler.

I agree. I think the 35qt would have been too small for why I wanted and this was cheaper than a Yeti 45qt.

I just got the Pelican Elite 70QT delivered last night. [IMG]Awesome cooler, and seems even lighter than my older Pelican 35QT. Big problem, however, is at about 22 inches high, it WILL NOT fit under my BAK MX4 cover closed. By comparison, the Yeti 65 and Yeti 75 seem to fit with an inch or so to spare, according to the specs online (I ordered a Yeti 65 and will test the "real" product when I get it). Bottom line, the Pelican walls are really thick, and look awesome, but seem to take up more cargo space than the competition relative to internal capacity. For some that may not matter. But if I buy a $375 cooler, I want the added security and convenience of it fitting under my closed tonneau cover.

I just test fit the 50qt and it's an exact fit under a Undercover Flex. Slightly shorter at 21" or so

This said, I will be selling my new in box Pelican Elite 70QT. Shipping is crazy expensive though, and if I return it to the online vendor, I need to cover shipping. Thus, I will give a good deal to someone in Eastern PA, DE or NJ (or Adirondack region in NY in a month when I am there on vacation). Unless you want to drive to Philly, Bucks or Montgomery Counties, PA.

Yup- I looked up the specs last night. You're good with the 50. Perhaps mine would fit if I removed my bedliner, and rubber bed mat - but that is not happening!

Different strokes for different folks i guess.

The pelicans just don't do it for me. Remind me too much of load outs and packing up "portable" dental units. Every once in a while you'd open a *surprise*.

Correct.... Icey-Tek did. (Thanks to @Mike for pointing that out)Yeti brothers ran with the tech and made a fortune. Now everyone else is copying "Icey-Tek" roto-molding tech and Yetis' business model.. All roto-molded coolers made today are "knock offs" per se....Point???

Looks a lot like a Yeti design..Except for the questionable latches and single lock. Latches look to be very easy to open in bear country...unless locked tight.. Just sayin.. (the embossed Pelican logo and lid hinge is kind of a Yeti knock off too. Not a bad thing. That's why everyone is doing it now.)

Around here you're more likely to see gator and sharks than a bear. Latches only work one way (tight). You have to press the grey button to release the latch. Not worried about Yogi and BooBoo stealing my lunch here.

Weird things can happen. A couple of days ago here in CO a couple heard their piano being "played". Thought an intruder was down stairs..Called the LEO's. Turned out a large black bear broke in and "abearantly" thought he was "Beartoven". Caught on surveillance video....

I've never really worried about bears

I do however worry about the 2 legged varmits and a cooler's magical ability to grow legs and climb out of the bed of a truck
