That’s cool - mine hovered between 13.4-13.7. Maybe 13.9 on a cold morning start. Never touched 14 without a diode. With the HKB I still only get 14.0-14.3.

Using the fuse will bump up that charging a little bit and it's better for the battery!

When did you buy the bad one? Prior to this Tundra I had an Expedition and tons of folks had these batteries (including myself on multiple vehicles) with zero issues on the Expedition forums. Then all the sudden about 2 years ago a number of folks on the board had failures with in a year.
All were quickly handled with a warranty replacement quickly except for 1. That seemed to be an individual Batteries+ location issue.
After that little stint I read of no more issues. Thinking they got a bad batch of some part of the battery and had issues for a short time.

Diode works good for me. At least 3 years, and no issues.

Your can get a couple of inline fuse holders and wire the diode and a fuse in series if your concerned about protecting that circuit.

    Did this myself.

I made the switch from the HBK to the diode and have had way better results with the diode.

Right at about 4 years now in two different vehicles, with a hookup to the charger once a month. No diode.

I just became a member of this forum today and ironically was directed here by another member to review charging issues with the brand new X2 27F I purchased yesterday to replace the Johnson Controls OEM battery in my 2019 TRD that began leaking acid and now I’m reading that its suggested to add in a voltage boosting fuse link?

I can’t help but wonder if the contrary results we’re seeing here is a result of the difference in charging systems between Tow Pkg equipped Tundra’s and those that are not because the tow package in my Tundra specs includes a Heavy Duty Battery and a 170amp Alternator. Now I don’t know what size alternator the non tow package equipped Tunda charging system has but can’t help but wonder if those aren’t the one’s not up to the task of keeping a 27 series AGM sufficiently charged.

For amusement here’s some pix of my battery swap out yesterday…

Looking in my fuse box I see a place for “BATT CHG” but its not a 2blade fuse and I think this might be the 4-/7-pin connector that’s also specified with that tow pkg 170amp alternator but I’m still not sure if I should be adding supplementary charging methods as this is my first AGM battery.3E727E01-7E96-447D-84AB-8814426D9191.jpg

You replace the “ALT-S” 5A fuse, not the relay.

What app is that displaying the voltage? Looks like Fusion but I never seen just text being displayed and no gauge surrounding it

Well, it’s been a very interesting 24 hour journey with my first ever AGM battery, and now a diode replacing my fuse which I got at O’Reilly’s. What was really interesting was I had the tech at O’Reilly’s test my charging system with the 5amp due in place and his meter said everything was passing but volts was down around 13.6/13.5 and when he had me turn on my lights and high beams I no sooner backed out of the cab and he said “Shut it down. Your voltage regulator just failed”.

So I then put in the $5 GM diode and he retested and said “Well somebody on the internet knew what they were talking about” telling me that even with my high beams and A/C running he was getting 13.7/13.8 so then I went to autozone and had the system checked again but their tester only spit out a receipt saying my voltage/diodes/voltage regulator “Passed” so I went in and bought my own first ever cheaply multimeter and it says 13.81

So now I’m thinking I want one of those fancy shmancy adjustable diode thingies so I can dial in for 14.2-3 so a shopping I will go.

Thanks to everyone here. You’ve been very helpful.

Update/Important: So at Oriellys we just sort of stuck the GM diode in there as best we could so my numbers above were with the diode not properly fitted/seated. (I honestly didn't think it would make a difference) but for gits a shiggles I pulled it and used a dremel to shape the sides to fit and seat properly then put my multimeter to it again where at idle I was getting 14.2-14.3 with no load but no revs either so?...close enough! :)

I used to work there for many years, there’s always atleast a 10% discount code or better on everything. X2 are good batteries. Made by Northstar battery.

I asked and the young man knocked off the tax and yes, most reviews and experiences of the X2 that I’ve read are positive to glowing with but a few sour grapes experiences which at this point in my 1st AGM deep cycle learning curve I would write off to charging issues that didn’t get addressed up front.

Edit/PS: I might add that on day 2 I clipped a smart charger on my new X2 only to discover it was only 40+% charged (my charger has 20% graduations) and it took about 4 hrs to bring it up to 100% last night.

Or just put in it on a battery charger every month like I have going on 4 years now. Battery seems very happy. I use a Ctek 7002 charger.
