Sure they did but it wasn't to the extent it is now. People were well aware you could get hurt real bad or die in a wreck. These days people think all those airbags, seat belts and crumple zones will save your ass. There are no seat belts and the dash is all metal in my '56.
Also back then you sometimes had a real nanny next to you or sitting in the back seat telling you to slow down

The stripes are usually Magnesium Chloride. It probably stopped at the county line. Each county decides when and where to put ice treatments.

See post #67 , I explained what I was trying to say .

I learned at the age of 19 that it doesn’t matter how fast you go, someone always wants to go faster.

Remember, there’s all kinds of people out there driving. Some even just want to be “first”. Ex - cutting you off only to do the same speed or speeding up when you go to pass them.

I missed your follow up. "Smarter" cars today in fact appears to make stupider people.

Weather sometimes can really sneak up on you and shit happens. I think we can all agree on that. Butttttt.... people still drive way to fast for conditions. For a long time now, I have been using Google maps on trips and it really gives you heads up on traffic conditions.

Today I went up West of Denver to get my wife’s Valentines Day present. Wasn’t horrible going up except for the -7*F temps. On the way back down I’m convinced a good portion of Coloradans are on crack/cocaine. People flying by me like I was doing 22.34mph on the highway in the ice/snowy roads. Close to the house some impatient driver decided to fly by several of us. They didn’t make it and slid off the road.

Drive for conditions. I’m amazed I made it home towing this by some peoples standards...

While I'm not going to excuse all the drivers - I've driven into a few situations like this prepared for the worst, doing 50 km/h and ended up sliding around, if other vehicles were there it would have been an accident. That's the problem with black ice, you're perfectly fine up until you're not. So to be safe on the black ice you'd have to be driving maximum 50 km/h, but I'd bet 1 mile back 50 km/h would have been dangerous as hell from impeding traffic.

It sounds like the perfect storm for a brutal accident - just like a fog incident in southern Ontario that also had more than 100 vehicles in it (perfect visibility then within seconds went to near zero). Most incidents can be avoided, this one sounds like it was inevitable. Busy road with zero grip, it would have been pure luck if no collisions happened but once one did it became a 100+ vehicle incident.

I remember that . There’s a section on the 400 ( Holland Marsh ) where it has its own eco system it seems like . Everywhere else on the highway is fine and then all of a sudden there’s 0 visibility either due to blowing snow or fog . I know where the section is and I slow down prior to getting there (in the right hand lane) just to be on the safe side . I don’t slow down enough to cause an accident but I’m prepared to encounter whatever that section decides to throw at you .

In my line of work this is considered an avoidable accident.
About the only accident a trucker is forgiven on is an animal strike.
Meaning the company calls it unavoidable.
Ive had 5 deer strikes in over 20 years out here. Last one being December 2020. Damage was minimal.
February of 2018 I plowed a deer in MO over 18000.00 in damages.

Very true! Two totally different scenarios.
I take winter driving far more serious in the southern states. Bottom line is southern states dont see this type of weather too often.

Im a truck driver myself and I have to agree with you. Trucks shouldve never been on that road that morning. You know if it wouldve been Swift and CR England I might of gave them a pass for inexperience. FedEx on the other hand probably had well over 5 years tractor trailer experience. Either way my heart goes out to all drivers.
The FedEx drivers intent was to make a timely delivery not to hurt anyone.

Definitely bad truckers out there. We're plagued with the same morons as any other line of work.

Statistics show that a mere 11% of trucks on the roads are the cause of accidents.

11% of collisions are caused by trucks or 11% of trucks on the road have caused collisions?

Plenty of morons up north too. My brother witnessed some of this yesterday. People were just going way to fast for the conditions. He was driving his AWD Subaru with studded snow tires and people were passing him like it was the Indy 500. Roads were slick and the bridges even slicker.

Watch the video in the link. Would you be going 75+ mph? Some were....

I’m not sure a lot of people know how advanced semi’s are these days. My mind would be blown on today’s trucks compared to when I drove commercially.

This is a two edged sword though. As goes with all technology whether it be in a semi or a passenger vehicle, people rely on tech over skill.

You know as well as I do that FedEx runs contract carriers for their OTR loads.
The only real FedEx drivers are Freight and some local FedEx Express semi day cab drivers.
Hard to say that any contract carrier pulling FedEx ground loads had over 5 years experience..
And I agree, they shouldn't have even been out on the road to begin with under these conditions..

I didn't work all week that week, no reason for it.
My hub was shut down Monday thru Wednesday, didn't have any power for one thing.
There was no way I was coming in Thursday and Friday to work local in that mess.

First off, ill be honest I seen you tagged me in weeks ago. I wasnt really wanting to get involved but here I am.;)

There is way too many truckers posting videos! Period. To me this guy takes the cake. Ive watched a few of his videos and you can clearly see he and several other truckers are video recording. One hand on the wheel one hand on recording device. I cant watch it no more.
You got entirely too many people behind the wheel not driving. I see it every night.

You hear gun owners all the time. Guns dont kill people. People kill people, right?
I feel that guns and cell phones go hand in hand.
People are responsible for these types of pileups.

Ill say that my heart goes out to everyone involved in that pileup.

That fact is why I like the power of the tundra. I find that there are times that assertiveness wins the day, and gets you to your destination. It also helps to have a method to let it all go.

I have the best of both worlds. I learned how to deal with winters before technology and with technology. Every load I run starts off with risk assessment.
All year round. Ive dodged tornados. Ive been in Wyoming for at least four of there pileups. Ive managed to bob and weave. Over 2 millions miles safe driving. Hell Im held up by technology right now. The deer strike in December knocked my collision system out of whack.
Its been in the shop 3 times. Truck is slamming the brakes on its own. Last time I get behind the wheel of this truck. Its red tagged. Now heres where technologys on my side. All of our trucks are running drivecam. For those who dont know what drivecam is its a camera pointed forward and a camera pointed directly at me.
Truck slammed the brakes around midnight. I pushed the button to record the incident. Itll go to safety and Im guessing the truck will be put out of service.

    20210228_021820.jpg

Got the whole incident on camera baby! :D

I’m sure this is a touchy subject for you. So many great drivers out there and spoiled by a few bad apples.

    I will say this though:

Personally, I feel everyone should have to drive a large commercial truck for a few weeks. After that I can almost certainly say that everyone would not cut off semi’s, let them merge, give them ample enough room, and never tailgate. If you ever see a tire tread come out from under a semi trailer...

Im not sure on what FedEx's screening process is for contract carriers. Ive seen Swift pulling FedEx so Id say you're on the money.

My company screens all contract carriers and they need a minimum of 3 years driving. Hauling liquid hazmat.
