Checking out the news after a hard days work and see yet another tragic pileup. Sad day for those who lost a life or a loved one

But why is this happening so much with better roads.... better tire's.....better safety censers ....better suspension and brakes .....so many things being used to help make our roads safer.

If the conditions were poor drive to the conditions there is no need ever to have 133 crash into each other one after another am I wrong ???

One word....ice. Without chains or studded tires you can have the most powerful brakes and you will still slide. Up north here we are used to driving in snow and icy conditions. A lot of those people down south have never driven on ice.

No one ever thinks it can happen to them.
They also never think they can make it happen to others.

I am pretty much staying off the roads if I can anymore in Winter Weather.

We have had Sleet or Snow for the last week mostly in the morning drive time and it has just been straight up carnage every day for no good damn reason at all, just for being impatient.

Yes your right brakes aren't not going to stop you quickly on ice so that a very good reason maybe not drive like it's summer. I drive on slippery winter roads every year and see people flying along the 401 between Toronto and Montreal in icy conditions.

Maybe relying on "safety nanny sensors" too much instead of actually concentrating on road conditions. Sometimes it's best to take the day off when you get abnormal weather conditions... just sayin

It’s natural selection at work is one way to look at it. That’s no consolation for innocent people maimed or killed because of the stupidity of others. Unfortunately there are a lot of people with valid driver’s licenses who simply should not be allowed to drive.

The chain reaction was probably set off by someone driving very slowly in the left lane with their flashers on.

It was icy conditions. Its a scary feeling once you start sliding knowing you can't stop. When I lived in Montana I hit some black ice and slid right off the interstate. We had a cat in the backseat. She was scared shitless and every hair she had stood straight up. I think mine did too.

I’ve driven that stretch of road probably 100 times. This particular incident happened for a couple reasons. Number 1 being ice. There was a quick flash shower in a very small area, right on this area, that happened just before this and it froze quickly. The other problem was this was on the downside of a hill. Vehicles were coming up the hill and not seeing it until they crested the hill. Then it was too late because the hill was a sheet of ice. There was ice nowhere else so people were driving like normal. Last I heard was 65 injured, 122 vehicles and 8 dead. Sad deal.

Freezing rain! The worst road conditions! And highly unusual in FTWorth! I’ve seen it here! Wet roads and a few miles down the roads you can feel it in the seat of your pants freezing and turning to ice! One person slips up (cell phone maybe) but I’ve seen it before them damn things...and it gets serious real quick! Even in Montana where it’s not that unusual it can get messy.

Supposedly started with an 18 wheeler and LEO on the side of the road. People tried to slow down for that and it all went to shit.

My 1st winter with a drivers license I hit black ice on a downhill twisty residential road, I made one and a half revolutions and landed nose up in a culvert. I climbed out and up onto the road to walk and get help, only the front half of the car was visible from the road. Good times.

Yes its pretty sad. I don't wish something like this on anyone, and I hope none of you lost a family member or have any that were injured in this incident.

    A Prius. Just say it.

Those semi trucks don't have all the lane assist and laser braking safety features. And they need a hell of a lot longer distance to stop when there's a pile up in front of them. Pretty sure those trucks were probably the cause of the deaths. Not saying it's the driver's fault, but physics has a big part of it.

And not all the cars on the road have all those safety features too. My 2016 Tundra doesn't have it.

Makes you wonder...when we go exclusively to AI driven self-driving cars (which will happen sooner rather than later), will we be any better off? Probably not at first. Scary thought.

Where I live, I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often, to be perfectly honest. I consider myself a more aggressive driver, learned to drive in extreme conditions, and I routinely get passed like I’m stopped when winter conditions are more than a bit butt-puckering. People driving 130 + kph on black ice with mud tires for example. I don’t get it.

There has also been a mass exodus to TX as well, so some drivers might not be experienced in the ice storms.

I work 2 miles from where the accident happened. Patriot1776 described everything that happened very accurately. Usually in Texas when we get ice or snow, it's covering a large area. These were sparse little ice showers that you would drive up on and be in it before you know it. People then coming in on I35 on a hill and shallow curve, hit the ice, heading downhill, and couldn't stop. It was the perfect storm. Sad day for Cowtown.

    Prayers to the families.

WOW! This is just ridiculous to say the least.

I may ruffle some feathers in here, and this is my intent. Look at those professional drivers just plowing into stopped vehicles!!!! I have driven tractor/trailers and large equipment up to 105K lbs commercially and find that not being able to see way in advance is just flat out absurd.

We have some commercial drivers on this site that drive in craptastic weather (paging @GNTundra).

I see way to many commercial drivers talking on cell phones, making YouTube videos, and BS like that.

    Some examples:

    This guy is the worst...

    Semi filming for a buddy

OMG...I may not look good now...

I stopped reading the thread after seeing this post because it is SPOT ON....
IMHO, the #1 issue from this event is Driving too fast for the conditions.

TXDOT has HUGE flashing signs on the highways waring drivers of ice conditions on the roads..
Any semi tractor, and most cars, made in the last 6 or 7 years has an outside temp reading on the dash.
Truckers KNOW the temps for ice are probable.
Surely you guys have seen the video of that FedEx truck PLOWING into an already stopped traffic.
He was going WAY too fast for the conditions of the road.

I just drove from Shreveport to Dallas in a misty rain, then sleet, then snow, then no precipitation..
Temp was 36 when I left Shreveport, 26 when I got to Dallas..
No precipitation falling from Tyler to Dallas, but it was hard to tell at night if the roads were dry, or if there was a thin layer of ice.
By the Grace of God, a prayer, and going MUCH slower than I usually would have gone, I made it back OK.

Cell phones are also big part of the problem.
I, as many of you can as well, know when a driver has full attention to their cell phone as you approach them on the road.
When you finally pass them, they either have their phone 6 inches from their face, or laying on the steering wheel with 100% brightness.
I know you guys see it all the time...

I feel bad for those who either lost family, or have family in the hospital, but this event was TOTALLY avoidable.
You cannot blame the weather for this accident..

Still have my CDL as a back up option in case my cushy office job vanishes, and I've driven in plenty of crap weather. I totally agree that there are lots of idiots on the road, but they are in/on all vehicles regardless of the number of wheels. I see them on motorcycles, in cars, pickups, vans, and semis.

Don't get me wrong, I've done stupid stuff before, and I've even been caught off guard by some sudden ice on the road. Had a big ol' flat deck truck with a knuckle boom behind the cab go completely sideways on the interstate because I hit ice and forgot my jakes were on. When I lifted my foot off the throttle it had just enough time to tag the jakes and break traction before I had the clutch down. I was completely sideways, full on perpendicular to my direction of travel. Wasn't sure if I was going to shit myself or inhale the seat due to the rapid pucker action of my sphincter. By some miracle and God's divine intervention the truck didn't catch traction and flip, but got enough traction on the steers to allow me to correct it. All in all it wound up looking like an ultra aggressive and drift inspired lane change.

The truck was similar to this, except the crane was a knuckle boom that folded up behind the cab.

Driving is likely the single most dangerous thing that the majority of people will do, and so many approach it with such a lack of concern and understanding. It's scary.
