People around here drive 75-80 in posted 55mph zones. Weaving all around, passing on the shoulder like they’re in a video game. It’s insane. But the speed limit and the rules of the road haven’t been enforced around here for years. PD doesn’t have the manpower.

    Soooo nobody ever drove too fast for conditions in the 50’s , 60’s , 70’s or 80’s ? They didn’t have “nanny’s” then .

    No.

That's the opposite of what I'm saying. I said it's NOT an "accident" because they people involved caused it by not driving to the conditions.

Oh course people drove that fast during those decades but 80 mph’s in today vehicles is VASTLY different from doing 80 mph’s in a vehicle from those eras. Nowadays it’s tougher to tell because the vehicles are quieter and smoother...which ABSOLUTELY gives people a false sense of security. I am not knocking anyone in particular but look how many on this forum say stuff like “the Tundra towed my 7k travel trailer through the mountains at 75-80 mph and did great...but I only got 9 miles per gallon of gas”. A majority of drivers simply do excessive speeds which unfortunately is going to lead even more deaths. I drove commercial vehicles for half my life and in the tristate area (PA/NY/NJ and kinda sorta CT) it’s very common to see a fully loaded tractor trailer blowing by in the far left lane doing well over 70... Are any of these drivers going to have the intestinal fortitude to apologize to the family in which a member was killed by that particular driver’s excessive speed...NOPE!!

Today’s vehicles require more concentration and self control than ever before.

Speed is a factor, but slow and non-attentive drivers that travel side by side in tight packs cause more accidents than "excessive speed" ever will.

I wasn’t insinuating that people don’t pay attention to road conditions today , I was merely stating that these things happened back then without all the “distractions “ . It’s not the vehicles but the drivers . The safety of the new vehicles help in terms of people not getting seriously hurt or killed as often as they did but they can’t fix stupid .

Gotchya...and I agree with everything you stated. Yes the safety of modern vehicles are quite frankly amazing compared to 15 20 years ago. To take it a step further...we are starting to get to a point where the high speeds are negating the safety devices. It’s quite common to here about accident fatalities in my area. And speed is typically a big factor.

In the northeast it’s always the same story tight packed and high speeds. I always keep my distance because you can see how clueless US society has become as driver’s. Lost in space...

Yes obviously these things do happen. And they are accidents. Sometimes avoidable, other times not. You can be the safest driver in the world and can still happen. Just comes with the territory. Always a bit of a gamble

    For sure!

I just want to know where the idiots who will not let others merge onto the road are redeeming the points they must get for doing this?

How many times has some jerk sped up so I cant get in only to slow down so I still cant get in behind him?

And you can just drive at any exit and see the same thing as well as people waiting until they are almost past the exit before trying to get into the lane to exit.

This all seems much worse to me in the last year too everywhere I go as though people just dont remember that they are not alone on the road though it feels like it sometimes.

    And why????

Well, mine was due to a heroin OD by a young man last week. Came across several lanes in an instant for a head on. Carnage all over, he was in a civic, no insurance, revoked license, no seatbelt (DOA) I was upside down and backwards in tundra with obliterated front end and twisted frame- though other than bruising everywhere I’m alright- (glad it was me and my truck than the dad with his son in the car behind me)
Sometimes you do everything right and there’s just nothing you can do with crackheads out driving

I see more and more tailgaters in the last few years . I’ve always adhered to the 2 second rule where the rear bumper of the car in front passes something and you count to 2 before your front bumper passes the same point . Obviously the faster the speed the bigger the distance .
When I have someone tailgating me I’ll slow down and keep slowing down until they get off my ass .
    Pet peeve I guess .

I talked to 2 people involved in it. How many did you talk to?
I’ve driven that shitty stretch of road for 29 years so I’m right there with you.
As far as accident vs. collision, they’re all now called/deemed MVC’s. The C is for collision. They’re no longer, in the professional/first responder world, called MVA’s.
It’s not worth us getting in a pissing match over these people’s deaths. I know what I was told by people that were there, you know what you’ve seen in prior incidents that don’t have anything to do with this one. We’ll just leave it at that.
Prayers for all the loved ones who lost their family members that day, regardless of fault.

You, sir, are a unicorn. And I salute you.

In my observations when traveling on the interstate, people tend to fall into one of two categories:

the first type—the 1’s—are the people who spend all their time in the left lane. They’re speeding so they feel that they are justified staying left no matter how much faster someone behind them is going. These people will form long lines in the left lane to pass RVs or 18 wheelers. They are usually very protective of their “spot” in line and follow each other at 1 car length or less!!

If any gap opens up bigger than that, the second type of person—a 2—comes along, flying in the right lane past the line of cars just to shoot a gap that their vehicle can barely fit into. 2’s are the reason 1’s follow each other so closely at 80+ mph. If no gap can be found, they’ll pass on the right shoulder. The likelihood a 2 will pass on the shoulder is directly related to the size of the razzle muffler sticking out the back of their lowered import.

1’s are dangerous. 2’s are flat out insane.

I was really impressed by the drivers in and around Chicago and how easy it was to merge onto the freeways there even at high speeds.

    You're right I wasn't there.
I'm sure you've seen and worked more incidents like this than I have.

I know nothing of driving on bad road conditions.
Everyday I go to work it is sunny and 80 degrees..

FedEx had every right to plow into and on top of stopped traffic.
His speed was certainly justified, just blame the slick roads.
    All is well...

    Yes, thoughts and prayers..

This drives me crazy too,pun intended I guess?

I do a lot of long distance driving and it amazes me how much this happens in the left lane everywhere, same people I imagine who tailgate mercilessly or refuse to let others merge.

Actually illegal in most states too for what it is worth.

I think most people misunderstand those laws. They think that since they’re going 80, they are justified in staying in the left lane, even if there is a long caravan of cars waiting for them to get over. Most state laws simply state “slowER traffic keep right”. There is no mention of the speed limit whatsoever. The way I read that is, if you’re doing 80 in the left lane, not passing, and holding up traffic behind you or forcing others to pass on the right, you’re violating this law.

I find it hard to believe that there is zero fault with any of the drivers. Driving in freezing temps with recent precipitation, with little or no experience in such conditions, and most likely using under rated tires for the conditions. Ignorance at a minimum would be the fault.

Yes exactly what I meant too.

Pass and get over to the right and let others pass.

In many states it explicitly states regardless of the speed that you can not sit there and hold back faster traffic.

Fatuously, I always saw those signs as encouraging speeding as, outside of a couple moronic octogenarians, the slowest traffic on our highways is going the speed limit.

exactly. This was also on the toll/express lane with concrete barrier wall on either side so literally no where to go.

I drove from Fort Worth to Dallas this morning and found there was about 6-7 miles of brine applied to one lane of the highway. It abruptly stopped at one point just outside of Fort Worth and never picked back up all the way through Dallas.
I guess no one learned anything from the other day?
