People litter because they are shortsighted and careless. One time I went off-roading and on the trail was a bunch of scrap wood, a door, and a ton of other home-related hardware. Seems like someone didn't want to make a trip to the local dump so they decided to venture 2 kilometers down a trail, then leave their recyclables there. If I were not in a small 2-door Jeep, I'd have loaded it up and hauled it off myself. It was really baffling to see.

Damn, some of these pictures, wholly smokes! I think the litter bugs should get about 2000 hours of community service cleaning up litter and dumping sites if caught. Only problem is my opinion doesn't contribute to the "funds" shared by those who make the rules. Damn shame!!

I hate litter, a lot. it has gotten worse over the years. my family and I regularly pick up trash, lots of it. Anywhere from around our neighborhood and in parks to public lands and the national forest.

One of our favorite activities is the kids ride in truck bed on national forest road and they hop out to pick up trash as we drive slowly. We do this several times a year and will come home with a large contractor bag full. Have also hauled out tires and an entire chest freezer that was dumped. We also have a water version where we pick up trash in and around lakes while we kayak.

Sounds corny but be the change...

Simple, no dad in the picture, or not enough spankings.

I saw 2 girls years ago in front of me throw all their fast food junk out at a stop light in Vacaville.

I was going to get out and throw it back in their car, but the guy next them jumped out and did, and then the light turned green. Absolutely hilarious. The girls were furious, other people were clapping.

I always wondered why cops don’t sit at stop light to write ticket for people thumping cigarette butts out the window when the light turns green. It’s a $500 fine for litter around my area. It would be a much better service to the citizens than setting up speed traps to make more money. Law enforcement never seem to ever try to enforce littering and trash dumping. I have a road sign in my front yard so there are always bottles and cans landing in my yard from the locals target practicing. Fucking trashy people.

Oi, I resemble that remark... :fistbump:

....And I effing hate litter bugs.

Mind you, there's a county landfill a way beyond my brother in law's farm and there is always large amounts of trash on the 15 miles of road between our place and his. Sit behind the semis with their open top trailers and it's not hard to see why, the waste hauliers should be getting fined and have to clear up their mess, it's bloody disgusting. I know it might cost them a few dollars more to sheet trailers but it seems somewhat of a pointless exercise asking county residents to place their trash in bins for roadside collection if the trucks transferring that waste are dumping it on farms all along the roads to the tip. I lived at my in-laws for six months before buying a place here and the amount of times we had to walk the perimeter collecting trash that was in the verge and all over the fields so that the cattle wouldn't choke on it was beyond funny.

A couple summers back, during the heat of summer, and with active wildfires all too close, I watched a guy flick his 1/2 burnt cigarette out his truck window in a parking lot. Sure, it’s a paved lot, it landed 18” from a bit of dry grass / weeds, not VERY likely to burn much down, but at best, it’s still littering.

So I nicely says to the guy “hey, you dropped something there.” That was met with the attitude and obscenities one might expect from such a fine member of society.

So I picked it up, and returned it to him, or at least the interior of his old chevy pickup. Pretty sure it went between the bench seat and the door, and likely left a nice burn in the carpet. Not too sure, as I kept on my way while he scrambled for it.

North Bay Ca is disgusting. Everyone eats fast food in the parking lots and just throw all their garbage out the window.

I’m not joking, any restaurant you can find is littered with garbage.

It’s like it’s become part of their culture.

We visited our son when he was in school in Philadelphia. I've never seen such a disgusting, trash filled filth heap. trash everywhere. We took a short historical tour of the city, but even down by the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and Betsy Ross's house there was so much trash I just couldn't believe it. People are truly pigs.

Growing up in California in the 60s, littering was a sin. The CHP would fine you $500 for throwing trash or a lit cigarette out the window so never saw much trash. When I was stationed in Phoenix, Sheriff Joe had chain gangs clean up the highways. Now living in SC, there is trash along the roads everywhere. I though it was a Southern thing but from posts above it seems to be the new American norm.

Total lack of respect for themselves and others. I can't believe how bad it has become. Then there is the homeless garbage, TONS of it are removed by volunteers every year where I live.

Why I like the Japan soccer team ... fans pick up trash in stands and players leave locker room spotless. Class act and no diversity or virtue signaling needed.

This reminds me ... need to help pick up my own neighborhood more. I have a pik-stik from when I used to work with CA State Parks. I'll just grab a few trash bags and walk a few blocks.

They probably never served a day in a military service since, in that environment, you "police" the area of everything that nature didn't put there. They have no respect for themselves or anyone else.

Anymore I completely expect it in and around the cities, causes my blood pressure to rise, but it really chaps my a** when I see litter in the forest. I'm constantly picking up trash when out exploring or camping.

Was just in a National Forest campground a couple weeks ago and got this big speech about the campground rules from the camp host and about how I should not "burn your trash in the fire rings". I said, sounds like the same rules of every National Forest. He said, "yeah well most don't enforce it like we do."

I pull into the site, setup, get the fire wood ready...probably 2 packs of cigarette butts with several pieces of half burnt plastic in the fire pit. Enforcement noted!

Have I mentioned how much I hate the people who will bag their dog's poop while hiking then leave the bag on the side of the trail? If you're not going to pack it out, don't bother putting it in that plastic that won't decompose a million years!

Yep, people seem to ruin nearly everything that is within their reach. Even if you look at a view of all the trash in outer space it will make you wonder WTF! Think they will bring exploration tools back from Mars??? I doubt it!
