Toyota has never had a locker in the Tundra to begin with. Seems like a big complaint when it's the same level of effort to engage a locker or 4wd. I've lived most of my life at 9000ft in Colorado and done tons of snow wheeling and snow recoveries, both without a locking diff and with fully locked vehicles. I really don't give a shit if you get another Tundra, but since they never have and probably never will have a locking diff, seems weird that the deciding factor is whether you can drive in deep snow easily in 2wd, and not quality or drivetrain or payload options (and then adding a locker or limited slip).

Had a rear diff locker on my Tacoma and 4Runner now. Did some hunting in the Taco on some pretty rough tight roads that a Tundra would never fit on. I've never used the locker and still haven't.

Whether it has a locker or not won't be a deciding factor for me. I'm more concerned with the crap safety crash test ratings the current generation has and hoping they address that comparatively glaring problem.

Yes. I'm gathering that you desire to use a locking rear diff as 2WD in snow.?

We don't get a lot of snow in Eastern KY. Maybe 20 inches a season on a bad year.. last year we probably didn't get 5 inches. The worst I've had to do is go into 4 Low to get up a hill more easily. You can only go 5mph with the diff locked in a Tacoma. Is that not the case with other manufacturers?

Unfortunately the vast majority of owners overlook or don’t understand the value of a locker (and it has nothing to do with 4lo).

An experienced driver with a locker can traverse terrain with less environmental impact than a non-locked vehicle because of wheel reduced slippage and, in many cases, slower overall speed. This is in part due electronic traction control systems requiring wheel slippage to engage.

It is not the case with any vehicle with a mechanical (non electronic) locker. It works all the time w/o any input from the driver. Here's a video of various lockers and how they work. I don't remember if he explains the GM G80 locker. It's a bit of a long watch but well worth the information you get.

Nobody puts a real locker in their trucks. Ram has an option for an electronic locking differential but that is not going to be on par with a Detroit Locker or other mechanical locker. GM only provides anti-spin which is basically traction control like that found in passenger cars where braking is applied to the faster spinning wheel.

To me it is surprising that the TRD models do not have some kind of locking differential as a stock item. This is done for the Ram Rebel where it is added to all the 4x4 Rebels from the factory.

With the COVID-19 still shutting down the USA my plans for new pickup in 2020 are on hold until spring of 2021 at the earliest. At this point it may be better to wait for the 2022 Tundra trucks to arrive and get a real upgrade and the possibility of V-6 engine or even a hybrid pickup.

In what universe is the Eaton G80 not a mechanical locker?

Me when it's six inches deep. Not deep enough for 4WD but too deep for a Tundra, so it seems.

PS: My driveway is over 200 feet long and the Winter winds cross it making drifts even when the snow is light. A locker IS important to me. I don't live in the city.

That’s still shallow enough that my Tacoma or tundra used to be able to make it up my steep driveway in New Hampshire in two wheel drive.
Spent years living in Vermont and New Hampshire including the snowiest winter on record. Never needed a locker.

you running bald all seasons or something?

For reference, my truck was $45k and I could get something equivalent from the Big 3 for less than $55k, probably.

Lol for the 2020 which is by far the best truck for your money. Down here in Florida their going for 48,000 all day long down here. Big incentives!!!But even if you get 2019 titan with 20,000 miles on it their going for 35,000 of course cerfited pre owned original 5 year 100,000 Mile warranty.

    Note
Nope, that's a new 2019 according to their website.

Renault doesn't make the best anything. They ruined Nissan. Why would I want an overpriced truck with the capability of a Tundra and the reliability of a Ram?

I'm not interested in a hybrid truck, I think they are more gimmick that practical engineering.
What I would find interesting would be a true electric drive with engine generated electricity. Then the major components could be modular, and be modified for intended use. Lots of stop and go, use a larger battery pack and a smaller engine. Lots of constant power required (freeway driving) smaller battery and a larger engine. Perhaps you're not under the thumb of the EPA, go with a highly efficient diesel with no emissions junk.

the new gen of hybrids (f150 powerboost) have no typical hybrid downsides. There are only positives. Better mpg, more torque, instantaneous acceleration.

Can you show me an example of a Tundra stuck where a driver who knows how to engage ATRAC can’t get out but totally could with a rear locker?

I’m not saying it’s totally unnecessary. I’d much rather have the option myself, but with all the experience I have wheeling an unlocked 4runner, I’m hard pressed to think of a situation where I’d be stuck with ATRAC but able to get out with a rear locker.

If I'm trying to get going on a narrow, icy street, I don't necessarily want to be revving my truck up to 2000 rpm and then potentially getting launched into a parked car when it finally grabs.

I was unaware that the snow had to be more than 6 inches deep to use 4wd. I guess I have been doing it wrong for years. Does the 4wd go away after so many miles?
