67 or 68 until 72 or 73, four or five years. As far as units, it was one of the 17th Cav Rgts. And then somewhere in Germany. I'll have to ask him next time I speak with him.

Okay, thanks. It's a smalll world, you know. Just never know who you might run across. I flew Charlie models in Nam, too. So I'm assuming your dad was a gunship pilot for at least some of his tour. I was in the 190th Assault Helicopter Company, in Bien Hoa, flew all over III Corps, parts of II and IV Corps. I think 17th Cav was part of 1st Cav Div. They moved into Bien Hoa in '69.

I dont think he flew gunships? I think they were scout/observation birds.

The OH6 and OH58 were definitely scouts, but the Charlie model Huey was a gunship. Same rotor system as its successor, the Cobra. Only difference in the rotors was that the Huey had the stabilzer bar on the rotor head and the Cobra had what was known as SAS, a gyroscopic stabilization system. Scouts were the "bait" on the hunter-killer teams....sought out Charlie, drew fire, let the gunnies take them out. A hairy job, that scout.

Looking at your previous post, did you mean OH 58A and OH58C? If so, i misread it the first time, taking the C to mean UH1C

I didn't know that! He never really talked about his adventures with us growing up. Kind of like I dont talk about my adventures with my boys.

Yeah, it's like that. Can talk to a stranger about it, but for some reason, unable to relate it much to loved ones.

I know....I've been there recently several times. It's an industrial park now. One of the old stage fields is still out a little east of Palo Pinto. It's a small industrial complex now of some sort, too. It was called Dempsey Heliport.

Geez, just looked at it on Google Earth, it's full of new cars now. LOL And i mis-remembered it, too. It is east of Palo Pinto , not west.

My dad went through Pensacola flight training near the end of WW2. I have a lot of pics covering his career. I'll PM you. You might like to see some of what I have. He flew pretty much what they gave him. Fixed wing props, early jets, helicopters. Got all kind of pics of his career. Dad served with John Glenn at MCAS Beaufort SC. My mom still alive. Can verify.

    Yeah
Yeah, now if we count where I went as a kid as Uncle Sam was sending my dad around, we can add:

    Tachikawa AFB , Japan
    Anderson AFB, Guam
    Keesler AFB, MS
    Maxwell AFB, AL
    Walker AFB, NM
    Manzano Base, NM
    Altus AFB, OK

He was a navigator in B29s during the Korean War. Then later worked in nuclear munitions. Was riffed in '57, served out his 20 in the reserves, retired LtCol. I have a lot of his color slides of B29 nose art. In the process of digitizing the slides as quick as I can.

I knew there had to be someone out there that crewed or was a loadmaster. I had a buddy that was a loadmaster and he averaged 8 to 9 months gone every year.

Funny how that works?! Brothers and strangers. On one hand you have people that have the same experiences as you. On the other hand someone that has no clue. And the loved ones that you dont want to share that part of your life with. I dont really know where I'm going with that, I hope it makes sense?

Perfectly. And in some cases, the family went through their own personal hell, so there's no point, no future in "comparing notes". I was married a little less than a year when I shipped out to Nam. I know she went through a lot. We had to get reaquainted in Hawaii when I met her on R&R.
And she worked with some asshole who would come into work every day and tell her how many chopper pilots were shot down the day before.
