Is calling somebody a wanker similar to calling them a jack off? Like calling someone a knob is the same as calling them a dick or a penis.

Correct on both counts, but I’d argue wanker is more offensive than jack off.

Typically, a well meaning American starts talking in a fake accent..." ‘Ello matey, alright wanker" and ends up surprised when said Brit takes offense

Yeah I don’t do that. Wanker means what it sounds like. If I were to use it in a sentence it would probably be more like “what are you doing you fucking wanker”! So it would be offensive no matter how you look at it ha ha Ha! Or I’m talking about someone, “oh that guys a tosser”. I like English swear words. I may not use them correctly but they crack me up.

    To completely hijack the thread...:threadjacked:
I visited UK for work back Sept 17. Had a great time, loved the opportunity and Guinness and I consider London the center of what is Western Civilization. That being said...

First, my accent is real, SOUTHERN. More I drink, more south I go.

So we were having a pint with some folks from our HQ office and I made mention that the light switch in the hotel threw me for a loop. Took me a while to figure out I had to put my key card in the slot to turn on the lights.

This sweet lil' lass told me "Well since you Americans consume the majority of the worlds resources we have to do everything we can to conserve it."

Without batting an eye I replied, "Since we invented electricity I think we can use as much as we want!" (I know, we didn't "invent" it) It was game on then but all in good fun.

I loved the pub atmosphere, think it's more welcoming than the bar scene we have. Had my fill of Fish and Chips.

So are these words acceptable on television? A.k.a. wanker knob tosser etc. or is it considered just as bad as using an actual swear word?
