We know it's dark in there like you like things, but unnecessary to post rear end pictures that IS gross.

I regeared and have my LSD carrier in the garage. Truthfully, I am not sure what the LSD a looks like when it is removed

First gen use a real LSD, except for a few late models that have brake assist traction control crap. 2nd and 3rd gen are different.

    Good choice on the Harrop.

I'll be using this soon as I was paying attention when @FirstGenVol, and @jpink changed John's fluid. The mangler had no issues doing this, so I shouldn't either.

I'm assuming I'll poke my eye into the bunghole for nothing, but that's okay. I am a butt snorkeler after all.
    20201204_074024.jpg

If I can find something for cheap down the road a ways I may swap, or have it swapped for a real LSD or something. Any help for my two wheel peel will be nice. Any suggestions welcome, or links to more information.

Toyota Build Specs shows no info on LSD for me. Assuming Open diff which is just what I've assumed forever.

My truck has a 3.91 LSD rear from the factory. I just found a guy who has a 3.91 (3rd unit/carrier assy) for sale at a good price, apparently after upgrading to a different ratio. I don't really need one (yet) at 240,000 mi, but I'm willing to buy it to have when I need it. Here's the thing...it's from a 2005 DC. Does anyone know if this will fit my truck? The parts system doesn't seem to specify a p/n for the complete carrier assy.

Clean it and coat it in POR-15 to protect it for years. Mine only has minor surface rust and I’ve been driving mine for 21 years in the salt belt.

    ^ this.

It might have a different pinion flange. Which can be swapped. That'll be the only possible difference.

So I bought the used 3rd unit and it's great. ~ 120,000 miles and effectively zero backlash (I haven't put a dial gauge on it yet). But I can now confirm that I do need to swap the flange. The 2005 - 2006 flange is larger, and the hole spacing is 66 mm vs 60 mm.

Q: Does anyone have a flange (maybe from a blown out rear) laying around that I can bargain for? I'm hoping to get the flange installed and properly torqued while it's out of the truck so the 3rd unit swap is quick and painless. Maybe I'm just being lazy...I can probably just pull my old flange and make the swap, just adding another day to the ordeal. (The seals are the same for both years, I checked already).

Timmy the Toolman has a video where he changes the pinion seal and re-installs the flange without setting the preload (theory being that staking the nut in the same place will more or less approximate the original torque. Seems legit...I would do this if I were laying under my truck and only changing the seal. Since I want to use a different flange, however, this seems like not the best approach. Or am I being to AR about this?

Q: Has anyone been to this movie before?

If you don't see the LSD sticker on the rear of the pumpkin, I recommend checking out this thread: https://www.tundras.com/threads/so-you-wanna-buy-just-bought-a-1st-gen-tundra-eh.115928/

It'll help you understand what you need to be aware of for the truck as a whole, and it also should help you sign up for the Toyota Owner's website, so you can link its VIN to you, check on recalls, and print out the options build sheet, which would list if it came from the factory with LSD.

For sure! Definitely no sticker, and I tried the vin but it's a Canadian truck, and it has minimum info on it when entering the vin ( nothing under equipment) , I'm guessing that's the case because it's Canadian?

The original post on this thread talks about looking into the housing, and others have done the same, just hoping someone can recognize with my photo and video

Shouldn't be the case, I don't think? But actually ....

After signing in to https://www.toyota/com/owners I click on the Owners button, then on Vehicle Specs link

    upload_2023-8-30_8-40-48.png
From there, I plug in my VIN number in the box provided and submit...

    upload_2023-8-30_8-41-45.png

Sometimes it takes a minute for the data to load, when it does, you should be able to download a PDF of your truck's specs using the circled link, or just scroll down in the page to view the specs.

    upload_2023-8-30_8-44-16.png
It looks like Toyota has done screwed something up again, because here's a side-by-side on what the new Owners website puts out (right) versus what it put out a couple years ago (left)... you can see, Toyota is strangely omitting a crapload of info here...

Totally bogus. If I had a Twitter account, I'd probably lambast Toyota of America over this, tell them they need to fix their shit.

And the Toyota Canada or Toyota north america websites have nothing like the USA one , where you get all the data

What I posted above is from the N. America/US website. Clearly we're not even getting "all the data" after Toyota's changed things on their end...

Sorry for bringing this back from the dead, but I recently acquired a 2005 DC 4x4 and I'm looking to build out a new rear axle with disc brakes. My current axle is severely rusted and is seeping gear oil through the housing. This thread was very helpful for discerning differentials, but when shopping salvage parts for a new axle housing, are they all the same for our trucks if I stay within the same model year(05-06)? I.e. 2wd vs 4wd, LSD vs Open, AC vs DC, ABS vs non-ABS, etc. Thanks in advance for any help I may get regarding this.

    (see signature for truck info)
Hey hey another E. Tennesseer! @FirstGenVol @janbrochill and I'm missing someone but it's expected.

The info dump/intro dump thread doesn't have that info directly, just that you need to stick with your cab type if double cab.

There's a bunch of threads around here that have throwbacks to what the various gearing is across years, cabs, trim packages. Someone here has a grid or layout. I just keep hitting threads like this: https://www.tundras.com/threads/rear-diff-swap.124533/#post-3311468

    Maybe it's @assassin10000 who knows, or @BubbaW?
