What would you prefer: 6-seat capacity or 38-gallon fuel tank?

We use our front bench all the time. Like others have mentioned, get he seat and add the tank later. I’m curious if the OEM tank would fit a 2nd gen. Is the frame/bed any different?

I have the 38gal and I would never give it up for a 6th seat. these crew cabs are plenty big IMO. if someone else needs a ride, roll down the back window and put them I the bed lol

I also wanted both and went with the bench seat. Family of 5 but we on a monthly occasion would take an extra person. Figured a full 26 gal tank will last 5-6 hrs on highway which is a good time for a break anyway to fill up.

Has anyone with bench seat swapped out a 26 gal with Toyota 38 gal tank? If so, do you have a write up?

I have never felt the need for another seat - I like the buckets. So, I bought the upgrade to get the buckets, not necessarily for the bigger tank, but it surely is nice to have to only fill up once a week instead of more often.

I debated this when I purchased mine as well, I hate how auto manufacturers group options anymore. Like the guy who wants a bench seat doesn't have a need for a 38gal tank, who comes up with this crap.

Anyways I went with the front bench over the 38gal tank, with the idea that I can always add a transfer flow tank if the smaller tank became an issue. I like my front bench and use it a lot, so I'm happy I went hat route.

Don't know where you live. Some states don't allow installation of the aftermarket Transferflow. California....

I’d much prefer the bigger tank. I rarely have 4-5 people in the truck, let alone 6.

It's not just the bench vs 38 gallon tank. On the SR5 Upgrade you also get the auto-dimming mirror, 10-way power seat (bench only reclines and slides fore and aft), steering wheel telescopes (tilt only with bench). The shifter stalk is huge also and may interfere with phone dash mounts.

I like bench seats too but there are so many options that come with the SR5 upgrade its an easy choice for me.

The bigger tank should be part of the tow package regardless of trim. Hope Toyota wises up to this in the 4th gen. You should be able to get a base truck with the large tank.

38 gallon tank. The 26 gallon tank drove me nuts. Plus I like the console and not the bench.

I went with the SR5 upgrade and regret it. I have 6 in my family but didn’t think it would be a big deal. Turns out it kind of is.

You would be willing to put up with the smaller gas tank?

Yes. However, I’d probably explore aftermarket options. As stated above, you can replace the gas tank but cant stick someone in the center console, or something like that.

I’ll take the fuel please. Never have more than 4 in the truck. Plus it’s nice to have extra fuel out in the bush wheeling.

I’m went with the bench. Really prefer the space. I’m a really big guy and would rather have the leg room. Hated the center console in my Tacoma and 4Runner. Also the storage on the bench is great. The under seat space is nice and the two top storage spaces on the back of the seat is really usable. Finally I have always kept a small pillow 8x12 in my truck and use it on top of my arm rest because of my height and for comfort(also great for a nap when the wife’s shopping lol). I highly recommend. One last tip I found online. Cut down two fernco couplers and put them in the cup holders for the perfect size, totally needed them as they are way to big.

Out of the five, two are imaginary and live in the glovebox.

    38 gallon tank.

They can drive themselves or take an Uber. Don't need more people taking up space.

I chose the 38 Gallon tank and SR5 upgrade options. I used to have a truck with a bench seat and sitting 3 people in the front of a truck is uncomfortable for me while driving (was a reg cab truck) Fast forward to now I do not have kids and at the most its my wife and I and maybe (rarely) 1 or 2 more people. 38 Gallon tank is also favored since I plan to tow with the truck as well.

We love the extra seat in the middle for rover or if the kids are fighting in the back. We use it as the "time out" seat, theres no dvd player in the front :) You can always spend the money and get a after-market fuel tank. I installed a 46 gallon transfer flow tank and can drive a long way now.

How much did the transferflow cost you? What year Tundra do you have? Are you concerned about the reduced clearance or the transferflow getting scraped when going over bumps?

Just for the record, the "bench" seat is actually bucket seats, the main difference is the center console only.

I would choose the center console. Reason being is that I have had a bench seat and never used it except maybe once. The center console in my opinion looks nicer and the opportunity for the bigger gas tank is a plus for me. Just my .02

We needed the 6 seat capacity, and now have realized how horribly small the 26 gallon tank is.. Best option would be both... I am seriously considering the $$$ for the 38 gal swap as I am in CA, so transferflow is a no, no...... Bench seat with or without the 38gal should be available IMO, as most of my potential passengers would prefer to NOT use the 3rd row of the truck bed!

My small family doesn’t need the extra seat, only 3 of us so I didn’t consider the bench type seat. The 38 gal tank wasn’t an option on my Gen 2 but i do plan on adding it at some point. A friend just installed the 38 gal tank on his gen 2 @papasmurf He said it was pretty straight forward and only needed to add the new OE cross member near the front of the new tank.

Is the transferflow even available in 2018? I didn't see it on the website.
