Wow man, you sure are making this difficult. I’m saying putting thick gear lube in your transfer case that is thicker than required caused my truck to pull to one side or the other when 4 x 4 was engaged. You’re adding stuff to my story that is not anywhere near what I said. So take it for what it’s worth and do whatever you want.

i’m just stating the facts. I put in 75-90 gear lube in my transfer case. Noticed my truck started pulling to one side one 4 x 4 was engaged. Transfer case also had a difficult time disengaging. Switched back to the proper fluid and everything went back to normal. End of story

"facts" OK, sure. I will continue not believing your story about a slightly different weight of gear oil causing your truck to pull to the side in 4-Hi.

Hahahahaha hahahahaha hahahahaha ok chief I made it up. Why don’t you go ahead and put the same fluid from your differentials into your transfer case. Oh wait, you have a 2008 So you have no actual basis to stand on in this discussion. The “facts” are my truck pulled when in 4 x 4 going down the street in a straight line. I changed the fluid back, and it didn’t do it anymore. I have no reason to make that up. I don’t know why you’re being so weird. But I have nothing to prove to you. 75W and 75-90W are completely different oils. Not “slightly” different, completely different. Your 2008 has a completely different transfer case. So until you get a 2014 and up Tundra, you will never know first hand. I may not have an engineering degree but I know what my truck did. If I’m remembering correctly it almost was like a torque steer.

You telling me that you don’t believe me, is basically you calling me a liar. Why would I lie about something so trivial? It was very noticeable when it happened. I don’t know what else I could say to you.

It's pretty simple for one to be wrong about something without intentionally lying; is it that hard to understand? You realize that the oil undergoes great changes in viscosity as temperature changes right? Parts can be revised and updated without being that much different. How does putting a different weight of oil in the transfer case cause the truck to pull to one side?

I'm assuming you're talking about the Ravenol 75w. You wouldn't use it on a pre-2014 Tundra. There's other threads on here, but in 2014, Tundras started coming with a Borg Warner t-case and that specifically required 75w. The OEM toyota 75w is like $80 per quart, so others here have sourced Ravenol, which I believe is German.

For a pre-2014, use the same oil that you have in your diffs, which is most likely, 75-90.

I think you should use what it calls for and it’s pretty cheap. Just the same stuff you put in your rear differential. Pretty sure that’s what 2008 to 2013 calls for. It’s the 2014’s and up that call for the different oil because of it being a different style transfer case from another company. Although Ravenol should make the weight you’re looking for.

All good. Thanks. I'll pick up 6qts of mobil1 75w90 for t/case and both diffs. Not sure if it would be worth the upgrade to royal purple or redline. Advanced auto's got a 25% off so delivered comes to $67. Whereas royal purple would run another $35 or so...

I now wonder if that is why my 4LO wouldn't disengage, wrong oil? I remember going from 2HI to 4HI I heard an audible clunk inside with windows up, AC blasting, and the radio on. Then 4HI to 4LO it clunked again. I couldn't get it out of 4LO until it sat for 4-5 hours after getting home, had to drive 12 miles at 10 MPH. Once I got it out of 4LO, I took it in for a oil change and had them check the TC. I trust my mechanic and he just replaced the oil with 75W and now no audible clunk in the cabin from the TC. Interesting thought concerning viscosity of the TC oil would have anything to do with that function.

Was that for a pre 2014 tundra? Tundra changed transfer cases in 2014 and needed 75w. Prior to 2014, 75w90 was what's the spec called for

I've had the Ravenol in my 2017 for about six months. I've used 4hi and 4lo a couple times. No issues so far.

I have a 2020 Pro and have installed Amsoil 75W90 Severe Gear in front and rear diffs, AS WELL AS the transfer case. I was/am aware of the change in 2014 requiring 75W in transfer case, however, after talking with several mechanics (including Toyota Techs), I was told as long as it was GL5, it would be fine. With that said, I have had NO issues with this oil in the transfer case. If fact, it appears to shift in/out of 4wd quicker with the new 75W90. Been running for awhile...I'll update if any issues arise.

    Thanks!

I have a 2020 TRD PRO also. Just wanted to know how the Amsoil 75W90 is working in your TC now? I didn't change mine yet as I've been debating on this issue because I won't pay $90 for Toyota's 75W but have thought about Ravenol's 75W .....Have enough bottles of Amsoil 75W90 right now to do it but was too worried to put it in.

Definitely don't pay that for Toyota stuff. I paid much less than that for Ravenol with shipping to Canada - https://www.ravenolamerica.com/passenger-car-products/75w-gear-oil-ravenol-mtf-3/ - the shipping was almost as much as the oil was. The spout sure makes it nice too, definitely worth the small extra cost for ease of filling and peace of mind

How has the Ravenol 75W worked out in your TC so far? What mileage did you change at, how dirty was the old fluid and how long have you had it in? Any noticeable differences after the change?

Someone recently pulled ravenol out of their t-case and it looked like garbage at relatively low mileage. I forget who it was or I’d tag them…

I just changed it last time I was home, did some running around after the change and felt he same as before. I changed for first time at 80k kms, I wanted earlier but had notions of selling the truck so didn't want to spend money on oils and the time if I was gonna get rid of it. Old original fluid certainly wasn't clean, but the colour was kinda unremarkable either way so I don't remember it exactly. Not like the engine oil where after 16k kms it's still a very gold colour and looks like I could go another 16k kms on it. I'm glad I changed the diffs and TC when I did.

He mentions going 60k miles with it, that seems high to me. The dealership pushed me for it at 60k kms, so 40k kms less than he put on it. And I've seen many posts here of people doing it at 30k miles. Makes me take the results with a grain of salt.
