Got around to changing my transfer case fluid today while I had time and the weather was nice. It has 59,345 miles on it. It is Ravenol 75w.

It came out much much darker than I was expecting, especially since I just changed my rear diff at 58k miles and it looked and smelled great.

This fluid was dark, smelled like used gear oil, and I never plan to use Ravenol again. I LOVE high quality oil. And it seemed Ravenol was a good fit for my transfer case when I researched it. But it did not meet my expectations. The Schaeffers I used in my front and rear diff still looks great after the same mileage. This is a good example of quality oil and subpar, regular oil.

I filled the transfer case with High Performance Lubricants 75w. I know this is great oil, and I'll be doing a sample at roughly 50k miles to send to Blackstone. Anywho, here's pictures of the used oil and new oil, cause thats what yall wanna see.

How long ago did you put the Ravenol in it? How often do you use 4wd?

Since it's a small amount of oil I plan to stick with the Toyota stuff for the t case.

I use 4wd quite a bit, and also used it under load while towing my 8k camper. This level of varnish is unacceptable in an enclosed gearbox for a "synthetic" oil. I guess Ravenol was cheap for a reason. I will say I never had and issues shifting into or out of 4x4, but I expected much cleaner oil than what came out. The front and rear diff fluid looked great, and it was all changed at the same time, but the Ravenol was the only odd ball fluid I used. I know the new 75w from HPL will perform to my expectations, so no worries from here on out.

I just wanted to post my experience with Ravenol. I will say it did its job, and if you're running shorter intervals then by all means use it. I just want the best of the best when it comes to oil, because we all need a hobby right?

Did it look much worse than the Toyota stuff that was originally in it?

I think it had 75-90w from the PO when I got it, it didn't look too bad, but I think it was serviced recently before I bought it.

59,345 miles. I changed all the fluids shortly after I bought the truck in November 2019, so the fluids were changed in December 2019.

I just don't think the Ravenol is a quality oil just based on visual results. I'll be sending it into blackstone for analysis, because it has me really curious.

Can you tell me where you bought the HPL fluid, I can’t seem to find it. I have 57,000 on the truck and it’s time to do change it. Thank you

Do you still have the UOS? Can you send it to Blackstone or Amsoil for a UOA, curious minds would love to know.

*edit - nvm saw you were going to send it. By chance going to send any virgin OS's?

Here is the link to their products.

If you need 75w, shoot them an email and they can make a batch for you. But they probably have some leftover from when they made my 75w for me.

Itll be a few months before I get around to sending it. Moving right now so everything is getting packed up. I believe you can find the VOA on the Ravenol 75w on BITOG.

Should do it’s job as intended… was your first change at 59k?

Reason I ask is because I’m about to do my tcase with ravenol 75w.

I like Royal Purple. Probably what I'll run when I get around to the T-case.

Been running the syncromax in the Trans of my old 5 series for the last 60k and have been very happy. 5 ratios (+1) and synchronizers are still smooth after almost 340k miles

I ran it in my 4Runners T-case also, works well and a lot cheaper than OEM. I run Amsoil in the diffs.

So I talked to my friend at Toyota parts and he said they only use 75-90 GL5 in the differentials and transfer case. He said the 75w and 75-85w are not synthetic but plain old conventional fluid.
I did check with 2 other dealers and they said the same thing. They only use 75w if it is a warranty work. I have also read by other members here that is what they use.

I've heard this too from a Toyota Mech and was just planning to use my Amsoil 75W90 to change my TC oil but reading one of these threads caused me to pause for a little to make sure. One thread stated something about 75W90 making it hard to switch into and out of 4X4.

I just used Amsoil 75w-90 severe gear in both diffs and Ravenol full synthetic 75W in my TCase. The OEM oil that came out of the TCase looked like clean honey. We’ll see what this Ravenol looks like in 30k miles. Here’s a pic of what I ordered. It is specified full synthetic. Used it in my 4Runner for the last 60k miles I owned it and had no complaints.

You should change your T Case oil every 30K
    Severe conditions every 15K

The manual calls for inspection of fluid at 30k or replace at 30k for severe use. Where did you see it needed to be changed at 15k for severe use?
