Buy a top end gasket kit from Toyota. Price is good for what you get. Which is every gasket you’ll need. If you’re buying used heads, have them gone through with a full valve job and do all the valve stem seals (also in the kit) as for head bolts they can be measured to be reused if they’re in spec, but ideally replace. One all together, check valve clearance before putting it all back together and make sure that’s all in spec (you must remove the cams to adjust the valve clearance) check the block for trueness as well, and clean it well with a razor blade and don’t use anything too abrasive, removing the sharp edges on the block and causing them to be chamfered can lead to blown head gaskets later. And finally, use a quality accurate torque wrench.

Well it's cold & only colder lies in the forecast. Faced facts & dropped the Tundra off at local mechanic. Have to find out where the magical disappearing coolant is going. Now i wait.
fun fact - got to the shop & he was working on my Tundra's ugly twin. Work truck vs. Gentleman's truck. the years have been far kinder to mine.

What is this hole in the cylinder block?

There are two per side, the other dimples don't have holes in them, and this one looks too small to be an expansion plug. It kind of just rusted away.

Finally replace my crusty positive terminal. The SDHQ kit is pretty stout so that also meant I couldn’t open the clamp any wider to slide further down on my tapered terminal. For some reason it has a higher deck, so I had to loosen the loom clip below to get some more slack out of it. But as I’m thinking about it now, I wonder I I could flip the clamp so that nub isn’t in the way.......

I did a test run with some plywood I inherited from this house we're renting. I overestimated how much room is back there.

My dogs are just too big to ride back there comfortably. It would be fine for short trips but not for the trip we want to make out west.

    Haha look at those cuties!
I’d even say 1-3 hour max with that setup.
That is the main reason for the green light on a camper shell for us; the dogs are already super cramped in the rear of the 4runner, one 90lb and one 30lb in a soft crate.
So I’ll then have to devise some sort of setup when I get the camper, probably gear closest to the cab, and pups at the tailgate; I’d rather not have them roaming all over the place while driving.(my mom’s neighbor recently had a freak TBone accident on her way to the vet, and seriously messed up the dog, like they had to put it down)

Removed a fair amount off the edge/rim inside the Air Filter Box outlet. In ‘theory’ the air should flow better over a rounded vs. a squared off port. Took her on a test drive and picked up a couple chicks.

Seriously, after a city/highway mix drive there is something different. I’ll wait a few days and give a final conclusion.

Yep, it's just as dangerous as having a kid roaming around a vehicle. I had a friend who got in a bad wreck. She lived but her kitty in the passenger seat didn't. I haven't come up with a great solution to this. The vets say to put them in a crate but that doesn't work for 8 hour car rides.

I also cringe when I see people drive around with dogs hanging half way out an open window or let them ride in their lap.

Finally getting around to doing some grinding / rust-repair and cleanup ... Both sides looked like this before we started:
    JaxatfSsOsKRJ9FxgAmlXfYendOLbT0klxsjSmOb_b9d95cfa10063ad501d289bf314d4d9dba226d5b.jpg

... My son and I drove her into the shop, and did the passenger-side over the past couple days... Ground it all off, sanded, rust-protection, primer-filler, and paint.

Here's what the passenger side looks like today :

Ignore the water spots, etc. I *do* drive this truck, LOL. We'll do the drivers' side next week, weather and shop-space permitting... Really happy with how it turned out considering what incredible amateurs we are!

I noticed my engine fan shroud was loose because it was missing two bolts. I recycled some old misc. bolts and tightened everything back up, good to go.

but all those erratic scratches will cause turbulence & whirl the peas. You need to sand it smooth, maybe some bondo, then fiberglass resin.

Outside the box, but if you're mounting a shell - you could have the back window removed for the trip. Shouldn't be too hard to weather tight between cab & shell/bed. Let the dogs have the 'top' of the bed, closest to the cab. A sort of makeshift SUV. Glass shop charge maybe $25 to pull the window, maybe that to $50 to remount the window. Fairly cheap solution. Most cap windows to the cab open, or remove easily, worst case is a slider window.

Yeah. I didn’t snap a pic of the final job. I Swirled a thin layer of Toy 103 FIPG on the scratches. Smoov’d it right out. Pics make the scratches look worse than they are in person.

Took a second test drive since the work. Liking it. Lots of low end power. Mid power seems same. High end seems good with the only difference being that she doesn’t drop out of O/D as easy when stepping on the throttle to pass.

So far no ‘CEL’ with about 24 miles of drive time. Went to plug in the OBD and the phone was dead from no use. She is charging now and I’ll report back with some numbers some time this week.

I know you aren’t like an SCS rep but can I get a good side shot in the sun of those brushed copper? I’ve seen the brushed gold up close but not the copper.

Ordered up a shallow sub. I'm feeling inspired and from how hectic work has been lately I could use an outlet. Time to start working on the stereo again.
