Have you ever tried doing it from behind? Pretty awesome.

Damn, your frame is practically rust free up there. How the heck did they break 3 of the 5 bolts holding the skid plate? My bucket of rust's 5 bolts were intact when I removed them last week.

Reaching around to get to the oil filter. Also that it was better to do it on top.

Exactly. The other head scratchers so far are thermostat upside down, crank wire not properly routed, missing fan shroud bottom piece, and the other to be discovered items.

I’ll be tapping the broken bits out of my front bumper mount today on two of these bolts along with other assorted weird hand model ideas/stuff.

I'm only 5'9". it's not that bad really. you just need to get yourself a stool or something to stand on to get you higher up. I'm a lightweight, so I'll kneel on the radiator/core support sometimes.

I'm still confused on how you guys manuever the filter off and up without spilling any. I take the skid plate off like a non-ninja so I can do a quick check on the oil pan and whatnot. Also, do you guys mostly fill your new oil filter when installing?

I spill all over the place. Just the nature of the beast. I have a large drain pan that catches most of the runoff. I also do not prefill the filter. it's a good ideal if your filter sits mostly vertical, but it's too much of a pain on these trucks. It take as while just getting it threaded on right when I'm going in blind from above.

I use the FRAM Ultra Synthetic filters based on this guy's research.

No real need to pre-fill the filter, you can easily top off after warming the engine up, and re-check oil levels.

More important to remember to use your finger to smear some oil on the filter gasket (even old oil dripping from the bottom of the drain plug will do).

I thought pre-filling the filters was always recommended? :notsure: I do it on both vehicles and then just deal with the inevitable spilling that occurs.

Yep I still lube the filter gasket but I pre-fill the filter so the oil pump doesn't run dry longer than necessary.

it's certainly not a bad idea. I do it when possible. I paid attention to the oil pressure gauge last oil change, and it took about an extra second to come up to pressure. There's enough residual oil everywhere that it's not going to cause any harm.

I have the skid row plate so I have that in my way as well but I always do the filter from the bottom. I turn the wheels left for more room.

I used to stick a plastic bag under the filter before removing, that way I catch any spillage. Now that those plastic bags from grocery stores are rare in my house I have used a modified pie tin once and that worked.

I fill the new filter about half way, oil the o ring, install. Doesn't spill that way.

Here's how to do it easily.

    1. Buy truck without a skidplate
    2. Don't buy a new skidplate
    3. Change your oil without shenanigans

    Accomplished much today:

    1) Successfully Tapped 1 of 2 skid bolts. 2 for three ain’t bad?

    2) Final Fabbed and dry fit the Alternator Ground.

    3) Second drain and fill of Prestone Flush. I was calling BS this morning as the cleaner put in yesterday was slightly colored and not much changed. Figured I wasted $5 on 2 bottles and $8 on distilled water. Anyways, drained the fluid which looked similar to coolant. Added only pure distilled water this time. Took her on a drive and man the HEAT is cooking like the old days! The heat wasn’t bad lately, but it really bumped up 20°-30° degrees. Can barely keep my hand on the vent! I do have the heavy duty package heater core.

    4) Picked up the bolts ordered yesterday. Fast lead time from stealer. Couple of sales guys out front were really digging the 02. They were amazed how good it looks.

    5) Bunch of other crap like paint an OEM battery terminal cover from red to black scored from @lsaami. Did notice how very noisy the truck is on the highway without the factory skid plate. I can feel some unusual buffeting at 70mph, as well. Can’t wait to get it back on.

I guess I missed the backstory. Are you just flushing the system out really well? How dirty does the water look when you drain it?

When you go Vegan and build up Carbon Credits you can use the Purple Carrot Organic Insulation Mats to sop up the Liquid Evil Oil. Those poor Wagyu Cows were just minding their own business fertilizing Japan Soil. Now let's ask Gia for forgiveness!

Even without the skidplate oil runs down the big crossmember. There are always shenanigans of some form.

I cut the guts off the old thermostat to facilitate this Flushing. The engine ran no hotter than 140° after an hour of drive and idle. Looks like the new Toyota Thermostat is the same as this old one. I noticed some gasket maker/sealant in a small amount around the installation port which I cleaned up off the housing. I’m wondering if this was the original thermostat because goofy shop would never buy Toyota. They always used NAPA.

It does look like some tasty stuff! That is the exact amount (1/2 Gallon) the pass side block holds. Drained it from the engine block valve cock.
