My limited has the LSD as an added option and don’t have the TRD package. I wasn’t convinced from the sticker and the vin check so I jacked her up and checked by spinning.

When in neutral and rear jacked in the air: if the tires spin the same direction, you have a LSD. If they spin counter or in opposite direction, you have an open diff.

Better yet, find a gravel or dirt road and floor it from a stop. Look back and see if there are one or two tire marks.

Ok. Mine has the LSD sticker and the TOY VIN check says LSD and the original window sticker saved from 02’ purchase says LSD.

This will give me something to do today. Go out and jack her up again and do the spin test again.

I need to spot check this carrier bearing anyways to make sure the sizing in proper.

It sure is foolproof. I learned when backing into the drive way. Gassed her a little too much and left some nice short “11’s”. LSD confirmed.

I need to check my truck. It lights up the tires way too easy. I have my og window sticker... maybe I'll start there. I took it to get smogged Thursday and I have to really be careful when getting on the throttle. Empty bed and 4.56s don't help.

Bummer. I’m surprised the po didn’t install some sort of lsd when they re-geared.

Theres a much easier way to know for sure if you have LSD. Take off the fill plug on the diff and look inside with a flashlight. If you see gears it's an open diff, if you see a metal cylinder you have LSD.

It wasn't an option related to any package, it was an individual option.

Okay! Jacked up rear/front end off the ground.

In ‘P’ rear wheel driver side spins forward/reverse and pass side spins forward/reverse in 1:1 ratio.

In ‘N’ and ‘D’ (same test) the wheel I am turning by hand (either side) the opposing wheel turns opposite (regardless which direction the spin) in a 10:1 ratio (guessing).

Burn outs in sand are both wheels leaving marks equally.

Freaking out the the rear wheels spin in ‘P’. Never had a problem parking on inclines as the tranny engages to lock.

Other fun observations, all wheels exibit a slight metal grinding sound. Front is more noticeable. Can only imaging this means the bearings are going?

Rear wheels took more effort to turn as it felt the gears were engaging even in ‘N’.

Front tires turned smoothly and ‘free wheeled’. Rears did not.

Now for the carrier bearing. The new one looks identical to the old one in size and quality. Made some Sharpie marks to front and back direction. Feeling good on this purchase.

All bolts/nuts are 14mm except very front flange bolts are 17mm and the nuts are 14mm.

I did a dry run on one of the bolts. The wrench box end felt loose (only engaged two sides). The other side (12 point) was loose fitting as well. Not feeling good about possible stripping. Went to auto store and saw some flare nut wrenches that look like they would engage 5 of the 6 sides of the bolt/nut. They are a little short on leverage though.

Last hurdle to cross is the Cardan Joint where only a wrench can access. No socket with universal adaptor will fit in there as is very tight which means I need some type of lever bar. Question is: Do I use the flare nut wrenches? Or, the metric 12 point?

I’m familiar with center diff lockers and rear lockers, not a rear LSD. All I know is that if you have both wheels spinning equally, you have a LSD. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong. From all the literature and your burn out test, I’m 97.667% positive that you have a LSD.

Flare nut or line wrenches are intended for fuel or brake lines because they have 4 points of contact and less chance of wounding the nut off. I love them and use them on rusty/old bolts on the Duster project. If you can’t get enough leverage, slip the handle of your floor jack over the wrench and pull away. Or use a rubber mallet for some convincing.

Haha! The 'one wheel peel' !!! :D
Haven't heard that in a while. I used to do that in my mom's '70 Buick Skylark back in hs.

Edit: I remember being pissed at my parents for getting that car and not the Chevelle SS.

    Nice! Coupe? 350? 400? I like the “sleeper” Buick’s more than Chevelle’s.

It was a coupe. A tomato red color, black vinyl top, 350-4 barrel. It was the first car I did a burnout in, street raced, went to the prom in, received my first...;)

Edit: Let's see some pics of that incredible Duster.

The duster is still under the knife and will be for a little. I’ve rebuilt the front calipers, new brake lines, new master but need a shop to rebuild the booster. Replaced the water pump, coolant hoses, fuel pump, sending unit, etc. Just making it road worthy and safe before pulling the engine/trans and rebuilding for a few more ponies. :D

My old Pontiac was capable of eating one tire at a time, I installed a 12 bolt posi to extend tread life by a few hundred miles. I grenaded the spider gears in that posi rather quickly... once the rear was beefed up, I found weakness in the timing gear sprockets.

The smallest 2 barrel I’ve ever seen. Might as well be a single. The slant 6 had a single, 340 had 4. I have some plans in the mix and a hi-rise with 4bbl is first on the list. No serious mods till I rebuild her though.
