Need to add the upgraded climate control knobs to go with your new steering wheel better too. Looks awesome.

Got the camera and rear view mirror screen installed in the truck. Still have to finish wiring it up as trying to find a non rusted surface close enough for the ground wire didn't happen. Have to get the grinder out later.

On a non 1GT note, got some new shoes for the wife's Kia. It came with Continental Contact Sport 255/45-20s. These things were toast at 36k miles. Not many options in that size that weren't $325+ each. So I went with the Continental TerrainContact HT which are the truck version CrossContact LX25 that I have on my CR-V which I love. But ended up having to go up to a 255/50-20 which is an inch in diameter bigger. These look so much better on hers. I haven't gotten to drive it yet to see the difference. So far, no complaints from her. These pictures don't do it justice on how much bigger these tires look on it.

USPS suggests my backup camera “master tailgater” camera/tailgate comes today. Ive installed one previously and grounded it to the rear left taillight. There is a fastener underneath the assembly. Hopefully that helps

I’ll snap some pictures today of the location in reference. Hopefully it’s prior to your arrival home.

Looks great! What year Prado wheel? 2012? Also how hard was it to get the 86 radio working. I assume it’s not a direct plug/play and maybe some dash trimming?

The $150 or so I paid to have a shop properly recharge the system was definitely money well spent.

I think it's a fool's errand to use auto parts store cans to DIY. You should only DIY if you have a proper setup and preferably nitrogen to purge the system.

It's generaally direct plug-and-play, you just need to repin one wire on the 1st Gen radio harness IIRC. At least for non-JBL trucks.

But note that the earlier trucks (00-02 or 00-03) have a smaller dash opening for the radio, so it may not be a direct fit for those. It's a direct bolt-in for the later years with the wider radio opening.

Wait, did you just dump refrigerant into the system without knowing if that's truly the problem?

I'd be just as concerned about adding too much refrigerant into a sealed HVAC system as you do adding too much oil into your engine.

JBL or non-JBL system for your OEM setup? It matters, heavily.

And what are you specifically looking to gain, feature-wise? The options and interface of the 8-year-old system they put in the Toyota 86 is a bit dated if you ask me. I've got one I've kept on-hand thinking I may install it into whatever Toyota our oldest ends up getting, and flipped thru a lot of the screens (link). Honestly, it felt pretty clumsy, and after doing it, it's modern compared to our trucks, but feels dated compared to what's on the market at the moment.

Maybe I'm just spoiled with the most recent head units out there, there are a ton of options. A lot of what you need to know is covered in the "Audio, audio upgrades and cameras..." section of our 1st gen community info thread.

Non jbl for my truck. I mainly just want to Bluetooth for my phone. With a screen for maps. Other than that I don’t necessarily need all the new features. Just want it to work and look relatively factory in the dash. I will check out the info thread! Thanks

The GT86 radio should technically be plug & play for your setup, minus one wire re-pin.

That said, it's tough to find for less than $150 on a good, gently used radio, and for that $150, you're installing what's almost 10yr old tech. You can go with used OEM mic/antenna for expansion. There are a few other options you can add-on also.

But honestly, knowing you can get something like the ilx-W670 from Alpine to add a more-modern interface, CarPlay and Android Auto, and they're running anywhere from $279-299 on sale at Crutchfield at random times of the year and holidays, I'd be hard pressed to tell anyone to go with OEM tech.

The big thing for you though, is (1) knowing if you're JBL or not, which you don't seem to be, and (2) knowing if you have an OEM amp or not, and that thread will help you find out if you have an amp. Then I guess moving forward from there.

I haven't verified the pinout on it, but virtually all of the 2005+ non-JBL OEM premium radios for our trucks and most other Toyota vehicles are pre-built to work in both amplified and non-amplified vehicles. So if you just need quick integration with GPS, I guess it could be a good option? But you lose the benefits of CarPlay/AndroidAuto that allow your phone to integrate with the radio, use GPS apps from your smartphone, etc. With the GT86 OEM radio, it looks like you're still relying on its built-in GPS to navigate, manually plugging stuff in. And you may need an OEM GPS receiver to make that work (not sure), but that would add $$$ to the pile, along with the $$$ to get a mic, so ... all things to consider. And backup cam, OEM GT86 uses 5V trigger, so extra finagling involved.

Oh, and the pinout change for GT86 radio wire change to get it working, it involves moving one wire. Note the position difference, circled.

Valuable information. I appreciate and love this forum for that reason! I'll check out some aftermarket ones, just to see if I can better future proof myself and have the 86 as a secondary option in mind. The way you broke it down it seems like to get the features I actually use it would cost more than going just aftermarket in the first place.
