So are we supposed add or subtract MPG?

remember a while back Darkness connected something to his transmission that corrected the odometer

A lot of it comes down to tidying up wires and adding safeguards. If you have a SwitchPro/ Auxbeam, at it's core it is a terminal block with positive and negative connections. What makes it special is each circuit has it's own switch, fuse and relay built in.

Each pair of the smaller wires here have their own circuit, and each circuit is then connected to the thick black and red wires on the left.

    upload_2025-6-29_7-35-54.png

On top here is a positive terminal block with six circuits that are individually fused. On the bottom is a bus bar that I'm currently not using for anything.

    upload_2025-6-29_7-38-50.png

Here is a positive bus bar I have off of my battery. Notice how the stud on the right has one of those Blue Seas fuses I linked. My solar is bolted on top of this fuse, so is my air compressor. I've been meaning to put the air compressor on a different circuit though.

If you don't have the yellow box mod that Darkness has, just multiplying the distance you traveled by 1.06% or 1.08% is enough to fix the calculation.

Gallons at fill up ÷ (Distance traveled on current tank x 1.06) = MPG

Looking good. Maybe I’ll make a thread of all the stuff I need to install and all you fine folks can help guide me in getting the right components/stalling correctly.

Not a bad idea. Dozens of ways to skin a cat with this type of stuff, and I'm sure others have critique of my current installation and may do it differently.

Ya it would be great to learn from a bunch of you. I have like 2 years worth of stuff I’ve picked up along the way. Kinda feels like I’ll be asking a lot but exciting thinking I’ll finally get it all installed.

    "West" Texas.

Ok, I'm gonna air this one for a sec. This is what cracks me up about TX. Amarillo is clearly way more North than it is West. It could potentially be "Northwest" Texas, but we're gonna call it "West" Texas. Yet DFW is "North" Texas, despite being farther south than Amarillo, and closer to the eastern part of Texas than Amarillo is to the west edge of the overall state. This exists in other areas too, like, I consider San Anton to be "South" Texas, but during my lifetime, I've had Texans in my own family who live all over SATX correct me to say it's "West" and even "Central" Texas.

Yeah, I would've probably gotten closer to or just over 17mpg with stock non-A/T tires, beating my best MPG ever on this last tank. I normally average around 250m per tank after the lift and wheel/tire upgrade, as you can see in my prior specs. Driving in the city, even for only 1/4 tank, really destroys my fuel economy.

    YellowBox: https://www.tundras.com/threads/yellow-box-speedo-calibrator.31996/

That thread should help get you on your way. We '05-06 owners kinda got boned, it's far more plug-and-play for the '00-04 owners. For us, you've got to get behind the gauge cluster and tap/cut at least 1 wire IIRC. Your '03 will be plug-and-play easy and that thread will give you everything you need to know about the correct harness to pick up with the unit.

I wanna mount a vacuum ‘economy’ gauge.
Might help me be a little softer on the loud pedal.

A dumb question for everyone... How do I check the transmission fluid level on my 2001 Tundra V8 auto?

Obviously with the dipstick, but does the engine have to be running in park or neutral?

My manual does not specify nor are there instructions etched on the dipstick. I'm getting a rough shift into 4th (OD), considering a hail mary/last ditch effort by replacing the transmission fluid, which has NEVER worked in the past for me.

Running in park to check it. Supposedly you need to shift through all the gears to get it up to temp but I’ve found driving it for 10-15 minutes at 30 mph with few stops is what gets mine to temp. That shifting through the gears thing never works for me.

Thank you Bill! I haven't changed it yet, but I just want to make sure my level is right before I tear into it.

Ah, okay both. Although I’ve never noticed a change shifting through the gears or not afterwards. :notsure:

@des2mtn pretty much nailed it. There is a Blue Sea fuse block connected to the battery up front (though another Blue Sea block) by an 8awg wire and a 30A fuse. Then a negative busbar that I grounded to the body at the nearby bed anchor.

The charge controller is protected by a 25A fuse. There are 3 more fused connections available. I added a regular 12V cigarette lighter style connection with a 15A fuse for my fridge/freezer chest, air compressor, etc.

Here is how it is connected up under the hood.

Same....I'll try to do it on a round trip to town or dump about 5 miles away and everything is then up to temps for all the other checks I wanta make. Those new at least deserve what Toyota recommends and then after time they can consider doing as you mentioned from real world knowledge :)

Question, would it be possible to connect cameras to the DVD drive on a head unit? I’m wondering if I could possibly have a camera near each front wheel I can switch on when needed? I have this switch IMG_1199.jpg
Dude who installed my head unit said I can hit this switch to watch a DVD while I’m driving.

I’ve seen options for “rock crawling” cameras but they come with their own display. Would be a lot cooler if it played on the head unit

I'm guessing the switch is wired to a brake bypass (i.e. the switch shorts the 'brake lockout' wire on the radio to ground) so you can watch videos. Normally, for safety/liability reasons, you can't watch DVDs on head units while the vehicle is in motion.

Your head unit would need to support multiple cameras to do what you're saying. What model is your head unit? Should be silkscreened onto the faceplate somewhere.
