It's my work truck, and I climb in & out of the bed with large equipment and heavy gear often. The high top is the only way to go in my line of work... if I couldn't get a high top I would drive a van - that would suck.

I'm just really unsure how I could see that big of an increase after 3 years of consistently getting around 15.5

Is it possible the new radiator and coolant is having the truck run cooler and thus more efficient? That seems like a stretch but it's all I can come up with.

I'm saving for either a used Lexus GX470 or LS sedan.
That way my dad can use my truck when he needs it and I can have a backup vehicle and a DD.

Which brings me back to my wonderment of the URD 170°F thermostat. It's only $30 and seems like an easy way to help keep the engine cool in the Texas summer. But I can't find much info on when it's intended to be used. Some people say only if your truck is boosted.

I'm all for efficiency and cooling in the summer.

Those are nice too if you use it as an actual camper. You can build your bed platform a little taller for more storage underneat and still be able to situp without hitting your head on the top.

Doing very cheap mods to the ‘05 I bought last month since it’s my beater work truck. So far I’ve put a back up camera, Kenwood stereo, and a tonneau cover on it. Total for all 3 was $285. DE53E344-1EC3-4887-9371-38629A6C4F6F.jpg9CABF8F2-C3E0-42E0-8052-0879C9FDF854.jpg

Looks like you've got the same tonneau as me. I've got no complaints at all with it, especially for the price point.

Yeah, it’s way better than I was expecting for $160. We’ll see how it does with the Texas sun this summer.

Backup camera set up. Unfortunately there isn't a completely clear POV from right there, I may try to fan up some sort of spacer to get it cleared but the yellow line is about 16-18" off of my back bumper while the black portion of the tailgate handle is around 10" so it's fairly easy to extrapolate with at least.

Old post. Did you end up replacing your LBJ's? ChrisFix has a video about jacking it up enough to get the wheel off the ground and then testing by trying to rock the tire side to side. Is that typically accurate enough? I just saw another first gen guy on insta that had one fail. I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and replace. I've never done ball joints but it doesn't look that horrible.

I drove a Chevy Van from 87 to 88 for work, it had 2 seats, AT and AC. I added a stereo because the road noise was driving me insane, it was bare metal with no interior trim. I drove it from Miami Florida to job sites in GA, SC, NC and VA - very capable, pretty comfortable but that was enough van experience for me.

Filled the Tundra up today & calc'd the mpg since we're talking about them.
My standard 11mpg has been upgraded to 13mpg.
I'll blame it on summer gas & the new tires which are more a road tire.

I think if you grab a tire at 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock and wiggle it, you'll notice if there is play in the tie rods. I think going 12 and 6 is for ball joints, but either way if you feel slop you'll be able to guess where it is coming from.

Swapping a lower ball joint isn't bad at all for me since I have 2wd, it might be a little more work on 4wd. Normally I would take the whole spindle off because my upper arm is easy to disconnect (uniballs).

I have done it once without removing the spindle completely. There are probably videos of this with good tips. Best advice I can give is be careful not to cross thread the 4 bolts going into the spindle, and use blue loctite.

When ordering lower ball joints, note that 99-03 use a different part than 04-06.

the issue with our style balljoints is when the suspension is unloaded the balljoint wont show play unless its beyond bad. i got 286k out of my tacoma ball joints..
if you have the OEM id say 200k is a safe bet to replace them.. mine were super sloppy but felt fine on the truck

tundras ballpoints will be happening soon. as well as control arms.

I checked tonight on jacks. No play at 12 and 6(ball joints) but some minor play at 9 and 3. Indicating a potential tie rod issue. Sounds like some Front End Fridays may be in my future.

Chances are they’re fine, don’t know if yours was involved in the ball joint recall, if it was then the joints are likely newer than you think too
