What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Clear coat on the roof was completely gone when I bought the truck a while back. The hood and flares started fading fast so I went with a full repaint.

 

mind if I ask how much went into that or roughly what you paid? I’d love to do that too but also don’t mind a little patina since it gets a fair share of abuse out riding.

 

The roof on mine has seen better days as well. Used to spend all day in the sun so the clearcoat on the roof is toast. The hood is in bad shape but not as bad.

 

Got quotes from $5300-6700 for a full repaint. That was not in the budget. Ended up going with a one man shop and paid $2,300.

 

Mine too. I got the roof with some flat black spray paint because the paint was non-existent in some spots. Eventually I'll get the truck repainted professionally

 

That's probably what I'll end up doing, but the guy that I've used before retired.

Grandpa had the tundra painted a couple years before i got it, every time i wash it, i wash off big chunks of the maaco paint.

 

Note to self, better not get maaco.

 

Found a guy on Facebook marketplace that was advertising for smaller jobs and asked if he could do a full repaint. Met him at his shop and checked everything out and it worked out relatively well.

 

What state are you in?

 

not really MAACO themselves, it's usually how you prep. Did this with a civic and my 240 back in the day. Spray job was only a few hundred for 2/3 coats and clear. But they just sprayed it on lol so if you skipped on prep that shit would come flaking off real fast.

 

If you're in Texas, I have a guy. I wouldn't say that he's great, but he's "good enough" and, most importantly, cheap. He did my roof, all 4 fender flares, fixed some dents on the bed, and repainted the bed all for $1,000.

I feel like "cheap" and "paint" don't belong in the same sentence. Seems like the results won't be good.

 

they're really not. Mediocre at best w/ you doing the prep. Almost guarantee orange peel, maybe meh coverage. But it'll take on the 10ft rule and take the W lol

My Dad had a guy down south of St Pete when they were still in FL. He was one of those guys who didn't have a lot going on during the weekends and would do side jobs. The only thing he made me pay for was paint and the guy who cut/polished it afterward if I was doing panels, but Dad and I helped this guy out a lot with construction projects, building was something he wasn't capable of (we taught him to be self-sufficient, though). I heard he'd take on jobs with base color and two coats of clear or shoot single-stage for under $3k/truck, $2,500/car, including cut/polish. He did impeccable work, he just didn't have his own space so was at the mercy of getting weekend time in the bay at his work. Older dude. They exist, they're real, they do great work, but if they're smart they stay hidden, and they probably are borrowing booths to avoid issues.

 

I plan to get a wrap. Maybe a dark chrome to match the blue/silver metallic lexus tint i'm hunting. Not the gold, but if i could find that i'd wrap the truck in white or teal.

Got tired of stuff rattling and didn’t want to scratch up my sunglasses every time I threw them here. Quick sand and glued some leftover carpet down to the console tray.

I hate rattles and squeaks, drives me insane. For over 24 years old that's the one thing that still amazes me, that I have no rattles or squeaks except when I have the drivers window slightly down/venting.
Even more surprising since mine was in a hard accident/and "fixed". Is my jalopy just a unicorn? Maybe if I took this thing "wheeling" it would be a different story.

 

I just ran an exacto knife parallel to the lip on the edges. Took my time and cut it out little by little.

 

Got a new OEM radiator installed, along with a fan clutch, idler pulley, belt tensioner, alternator, and some braided stainless steel brake lines to replace the old original soft lines. Brakes had been soft the entire time I've had the truck, but never saw a leak anywhere but was losing fluid. Well, I decided to check inside my power brake booster and I found my fluid. That sucks, and I have the 2 piece master brake cylinder that's expensive and hard to find... I think after that's taken care of my truck will finally be drivable again.

 

@bmf4069 you ever find your leak? Soft brakes/mysterious loss of fluid sounds familiar.

 

I haven't even looked yet. I'll probably see if I can take a peek on Friday or Saturday. I refilled my MC just to see if it leaks out.

 

I checked mine by pulling the vacuum line off the brake booster and sticking a wire in the hole and angling it down to the bottom of the booster. Mine was wet with brake fluid. Easy enough to check.

 

But if I never check it, the fluid isn't in there. Schrodingers brakes.

 

Installed Bilstein 4600 shocks, 555 swaybar links, Daystar swaybar bushings and a 1/4" thick spacer (oh the horror!). The 4600's came preloaded from suspensionlifts.com. Before you chastise me for not using the fellow at first gen off road, I tried... I inquired with him about the setup I wanted, but I never heard back.


*side note, 1 month in and the moog steering bellow is still okay

The shock assemblies I removed from the truck were a mismatched set. The silver shock is a Duralast from Autozone and the black shock is a Master Pro from O'Reilly. I think the Duralast assembly was recently installed since the fasteners were still shiny, but the lower bushing was already sagging. The Master Pro looked to be a couple of years old and the lower bushing had torn. Luckily both of the lower shock bolts were coated in anti seize.



The rear shocks were an aftermarket KYB that were a pain the the rear to remove.

The front ride height went from (hub to fender) 19.125" driver and 19.25" passenger to 19.875" and 20". And ohhhhhh buddy, it rides so much nicer now. No more bouncing over dips and bumps in the road.
