What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

People spoke well of their progressive 3-leaf.

@TXTundraGuy23 I wish you were closer, I'd give you my lightly used OEM pack. I take it you're not looking for lift eh?

 

Single AALs are inferior to progressive AALs in ride quality and off-roadabilty. I've seen people snap single AALs off-roading.

I cant make myself trust electric locks & i've never had manual windows fail me.

 

My '77 Celica had a tooth snap off the gear for the manual window. So there was a skip which is kinda a failure.

 

I keep my wife in a lease. It ensures that she has a brand new vehicle every three years that is always under warranty and is safe and reliable. Current lease is a 2023 Subaru Ascent Limited.
As for me, I have only ever had one vehicle with power windows (2002 Ram D2500 conversion van. This was such a cool ass ride. Extended length, low top. Limo “C shaped” couch, TV, DVD, “mood lighting”, Austin Powers would be proud).
I have owned many Jeeps with soft tops that had zipper windows and many other vehicles with manual crank windows. I’ve had many failures with the zipper window soft top Jeeps, but never a failure with the manual crank windows. I’m getting old and with the price of Chinese technology, I would like to adapt a push button to allow me to roll down and up my passenger window, without having to lean all the way over.

 

Removed this cheap clear reflector under the 3rd brake light from the cap I bought. Thought it was riveted on, thankfully just adhesive strip!! Elbow grease, goo-b-gone and a pampered chef plastic scraper. Then a dawn soap wash to get the GBG off.

 

To this point, @TXTundraGuy23 if you want my Icon 3pc AAL, you can have it. You'll need to get new U-bolts but the centering pin should be fine.

Meanwhile here's why. ATS 90-221HD springs installed. Crazy you've got to remove via the hanger to pull the leaf spring, but whatever.

Numbers look good, I'd sagged down to about 1.5" with the Icon AAL, even with the overload. I'm up about 2.25" from stock with the ATS heavy duty springs. I'm sure they'll settle in a bit. I wouldn't hesitate to do these again in a second. I've got about 1" rake now, which is exactly what I wanted.

I will say - check the last pic here. Their packs aren't very tight. I'm not overly worried about it, but it surprised me how much separation there was within the leaves. Money shots taken on the shakedown ride, on the way to my 2nd favorite brewery in SE Atlanta.

The hitches on the early trucks have to come off. Enginners will crawl over a mountain of virgins to fuck a mechanic.

 

WHOA - that's 200 miles in 5 weeks. At that rate that tank of gas will only make it to Christmas!!

So I want like 2” in the front and 1” in the back. I really still want to keep some rake because squatting just isn’t for me. But I really never load the truck down much so I’m worried the ATS HDs are gonna give me like a true 2”. Then I’ll be like “crap now I have to lift the front to 3” and go ham on everything like diff drop and UCAs and stuff. $$$$$. It’s just kinda hard to lift the rear 1”. It’s almost stock or 2” with nothing in between.

Now I say all this knowing zilch about how the baseline truck sits now compared to what a new “no lift” oem comparable pack would give me. Last guy towed boats and the leaves haven’t been changed in 183k so maybe I’ll get 1” just from getting a replacement oem pack?

@DJenerated I wish I could say I am 70% on road and 30% off but it’s more like 99% to 1%. I’d like truck to not fall apart off road, but I’m not doing anything crazy at least for the time being.

A reasonable person would prob just buy the oem replacements and put in a 1” block if they wanted another inch.

 

I'm scared of this power window kit. Looks very generic, what all is involved? You can piece together the equipment to use OEM parts if you have the time/patience.

 

Yes. I had the single Toytec AAL and the ends busted off on both sides, on both leafs. Would not recommend.













You can always get another used leaf pack from the junkyard and spend an afternoon with an angle grinder and make your own bastard pack using your original springs plus the junkyard springs. I'm very happy with my results and it rides great.

Got home from a 1k+ mile trip to big bear CA. Maybe did 80miles in the dirt with some awesome trails and views. To busy having fun and BSing to take many pictures. Got tires rotated the day before we left, weights lasted about 90 miles, so the steering wheel shimmy got old quick.

What I’d tell you is this.

One, if you plan to pull things, skip the blocks. Pulling things with block is not ideal, axle wrap/wheel hop is real.

Two, you may want to reconsider 2” in front. I landed with roughly 2” up front and I’m slinging grease, could probably use to do a diff drop, needed the extended links, and the UCA were undoubtedly somewhat helpful. Maybe aim for 1.5” front and 3/4”-1” out back.

Three, I agree, ATS HD springs will likely give you a solid 1.75” on average based on what others have seen. I got a hair over 2” it seems. But the barely used Icon AAL I have, when installed minus Overload spring, will get you between 3/4” - 1”. Again, wish you were closer, I’d re-jigger my 75k mile OEM pack to pull the overload spring, and sell it all to you for half what I paid for the AAL kit.

 

You sound like the perfect candidate for a progressive aal.

 

I did my annual frame inspection and cleaning yesterday. Someone recently mentioned how the spare tire crossmember will trap and hold dirt due how it's shaped. Apparently they flipped it on newer Tundras. Anyways, they were right. I dropped the spare and couldn't believe how much dirt and mud I had accumulated. It took about an hour with the hose to get it out. In the past, @Tundra2 and I talked about how dirt can also rot out a frame if left unattended.

I also found that where my trailer hitch mounts to the frame it's starting to rust. I'm going to remove it at some point and go over it with POR15.

 

I recently pulled the calipers off, cleaned, and greased the bitch. Just had to do the back plate of the pad, slide pins, pistons, and the face of the hub. No more squeaks.

 

Can't help but wonder if it's not worthwhile to drill a drain hole mid-leg on that xmember? 1/2" hole would probably do the job to allow drain, then seal the bare metal.

I'm going to hang on it. It didn't happen after installing my new leaf packs yesterday, before test drive. I hadn't used the truck for 24 hours beforehand, it's almost as if there's something else afoot, or maybe fixing the brake bias by raising the LSPV arm to match my lift has them clamping less?

I did notice, after my first attempt to get in the UCAs, then aborting, my brake pedal is consistently firm if the truck sits for more than 24-36 hours, firm in the same way you'd feel if a brake booster's check valve went bad or there was a leak somewhere. All other functions are normal. I didn't do anything during that teardown that *I* felt would cause this, so maybe the booster check valve really did shit itself.

I'm gonna keep driving over the next couple weeks periodically to see what shakes out. I may buy and replace the booster check valve to see if it fixes, but for a one-way valve, that damn thing is spendy (OEM part is at least)!

 

It already has a few drain holes. It's honestly just a bad design. It's basically a huge bowl for debris to get trapped. I can see why they flipped it on later Tundras. I think I may have made it worse over the years with Fluid Film. It protects the metal but causes everything to stick to it. I washed all that off. In a few places I was pulling out mud by the handful.
