Yeah I know what you mean. Mine is at arms reach as well even with my T-Rex arms. I keep an old Kenwood remote in the center console that came with an older Kenwood single din that I had at one point and it works with my current Double Din. Thing is, remotes are easy to operate without looking. You get used to where the buttons are so they are handy to keep your eyes on the road and change your tunes or adjust the volume. I wished I had steering wheel controls in my DC and I've looked into adding them but I keep putting it off. The remote and BT media remote I linked above are cheap and work just as well.

I love Pioneer. All my touch screens have been Pioneer. I have an AVH4000NEX in the 4x4 and I have an AVH2500 or something waiting to go in the 2wd and replace the shitty Windows CE touch screen when I get around to it.

I like mine as well. The hands free works well linked up with my phone. I can push one button and say ‘text xxx and say xxxxxxxxxx’ or ‘play The Beltones on Spotify’ and it’s done. Hooked up my reverse camera to it, super easy. Also plays cds and dvds.

I specifically got mine for DVD function on nights where I can't sleep while camping. It has paid for itself. The backup camera helps since I have the tire swingout. But it's not so great at night ever since I hooked up aux reverse lights. I may try putting em on a switch or switching their lenses to yellow

At $330 (@Crutchfield) I think it's hard to beat the Alpine ilx-W650 but sadly CarPlay and Android Auto is wired-only - gotta go with the Alpine ilx-507 if you want wireless on those, I just prefer the faceplte layout of the W650 wrt the bottom buttons. Not a huge issue for me, I like to charge while driving anyway and have a USB port run into my center console, but ... bang vs. buck on functionality and notorious sound quality of their HU was a killer deal. I'll probably upgrade when they come out with the successor to the W650, I presume it'll have wireless CP/AA options.

Yes! one of the three main reasons I went with a newer model 1GT. But I really, really miss having a volume knob.

My Alpine is push-to-mute, if I push volume down for 2 seconds, it mutes the system.

I had a bunch of those, from Clarion, Pioneer, and Blaupunkt. Basically the install sleeve was a receptacle and the radio slid in/out of it.

I still remember my first car had push button stations that mechanically moved the dial and they had this radio band called "AM".

Pioneer radio remotes (and many of the head units) usually have an ATT button for attenuation, or softening of the volume. One push and the music goes quiet, not muted, but very quiet.

One of mine has the ATT button, the other actually has a mute button.

The face plate in the virus pops off with the little corner button thing. Kenwood or JVC. Think a Kenwood.

oh, on the remote.... there should be one one the unit face as well.
something about that push dial click that does it for me. Never been a fan of controls requiring the 'hold-down-for-2-seconds' method. My BT earbuds are like that. Click to play, double click for volume, hold for 2 secs for track, hold for 4 secs to power. Then, there I am, having to re-pair the fawking things once again.......

Motivated by @jerryallday 's recent failure, I installed my new Denso radiator, which had been laying around since February. I bought new OEM hoses and clamps, as well as a new OEM cap. Easy peasey! The old radiator was of unknown pedigree, and looked kinda funky.

    https://www.tundras.com/threads/radiator-replacement-double-cab-2006.127189/

While the radiator was out, it was easy to install my Denso rebuilt alternator, which had been laying around for nearly a year. The old one hadn't failed yet, but with 244,000 miles it may have at any minute. I forgot that you have to move the power steering pump to get the alternator out. What a pain in the ass! I'm glad that I didn't have to do this while broken down along the road.

Alt wasn't too bad to do with radiator in but would've been easier w/o for sure. Also helpful on the wiring part of it if you pull the forward rubber splash apron in the passenger wheel well, gives direct access to the rear of it. My OEM went out at 12-13 years old and ~62kish miles. Shocked yours lasted a full ~250kish

It may only be 1 second hold of down button, but I barely notice because my thumb is sitting right by the volume control on the steering wheel, so it's basically dropping my finger onto the button and POOF, muted. If I had to reach over to the face of the unit, it'd piss me off. I rarely need to touch the face of my head unit.

I agree on bluetooth ear pods though. I finally gave up on the other crap and got some Apple AirPods. Work mandates we're on Apple equipment (they pay for phone + service) and I've gotta say: The experience of using an iPhone with their AirPods is so seamless, I don't know why the hell I went so long suffering. I've needed to re-pair all of one time in 4-5 years now, they always connect, case holds lots of charge, and easy to customize. I usually setup a double-tap on left pod pauses music, and double-tap on right skips to next track. It's the only thing I had to customize.

But I'd still really rather have a direct volume knob on the radio.

Oh well yeah, that is understandable. I thought you were doin the 2-second finger-stall on the unit face. and dammit, now you just sold me on apple airbuds.

I have a new alternator waiting to install and I'm planning on pulling my radiator to make it easier. I will also swap the coolant and serpentine belt. I can't decide if I should go ahead and replace my 4 year old O Reilly radiator for a Denso unit or keep sending it. Nothing wrong with it but China. I think Denso makes our radiators in China too.

    What say ye? Full send?

I will say, Taiwan makes A+ products compared to mainland China. Things were a bit shaky back in the 80s when domestic outsourcing started over there, but these days, I wouldn't hesitate to have something Taiwanese over something mass-produced on the mainland!

If I have a choice, I'll always pick Taiwan over China. I truly feel like they're different beasts, which I know PRC probably hates b/c I'm not the only one

And I'd damn sure take something made in Taiwan over Indonesia or India as well...

Nice! I bought one 4 years ago from Amazon and it arrived damaged and was made in China. My truck was already taken apart and I couldn't wait so that's how I ended up with one from O Reilly.

I'm trying to decide between the Alpine ilx-507, Sony XAV-AX6000, and Sony XAV-AX4000. Any thoughts? I will be buying through crutchfield, but I am open to a different unit if it makes sense. I'd like to have wireless carplay. I want to it to fit in the opening, so 6 or 7 inch screens seem best. The photos I've seen of 9 to 11 inch screens in 1st gen tundras look silly.
I don't know if I care about capacitive screens or not.

I've got a JBL stock system. I plan to buy the accessories from Crutchfield to bypass the amp. So, what speakers to put in the doors? Kenwood KFC 1666S is what I put in the cart. They've got good reviews and are affordable.

I like Pioneer but the 4660 I have is pricey. I am undecided on my ‘05 Tacoma and trying to stay stock but not sure how long I can hold out. It’s on stock #3 right now, after swapping silver for black then to the current 2015.

Tundra could look nice with the right kit and a 9” screen. There is room for a flush to the front bezel install.
