Front diff looks like it might have had water in it. Did any water come out or did it look “thin” when you first cracked it? I’m a full synth guy too. Hasn’t blown any of my diffs up in 100k+ miles. My front diff and transfer case fluid always look brand new when I dump them. Don’t use 4wd a lot though. Rear diff always look dark.

Not that I saw, and I'm always looking for water. Looked like straight-up oil, w/lots of gear glitter. But it's an interesting theory, so I'll pour it off into a translucent gallon jug and look for some separation after a week or so just in case. Shot a light into the bottom drain plug to look for signs of anything amiss but couldn't see much of shit.

And on the update front, @w666 GOT CHATTER OUT BACK. After sitting overnight, then pulling out this AM, I actually am getting chatter out back now. But here's the thing. It's only heard if the ass-end is cold (i.e. been sitting an hour or more), and most notable in reverse with the wheels kicked slightly. I get about 1/2 to 2/3 less chatter with the wheel slightly turned in forward, until - as is 'normal' with chatter IME - you give it gas or exceed 1-2 mph.

I'm going to attempt reaching out to Mobil1 today to raise hell. The level of chatter I'm hearing isn't necessarily what I'd consider "serious", I've had worse in some of the Posi-rear vehicles I've owned. But for all I know it will get worse.

I can't imagine how Mobil1's product can really be that different from what Amsoil is putting out with their SevereGear stuff. I've seen a number of people on here post having zero chatter using SevereGear w/LSD in their 1GT.

Yep, there's just something about the 1GT w/LSD. You'll notice the chatter most when accelerating from a stop while turning. Just admit defeat and use Lucas 80w90 (no additive required). Maybe the Mobil-1 folks will refund your money :)

We shall see. I really don't mind the work to swap out fluid. But it does suck knowing what I paid for the stuff.

I actually didn't notice it at all really when accellerating from a stop, except when backing out of my driveway, then pulling forward. The entire rest of the trip, with lots of stop-and-turn-left-or-right, I hear nothing, at any speed. I have to 30-45° reverse-and-forward out of my driveway to make the full 90 to get to the street. The rest of the trip was basically 90s. I guess I'll need to see if it gets worse between now and whenever I swap fluids next.

I'm assuming the front diff and tc will be fine with the same will fine w/the same Mobil1 but 75w90, but I'll still be finding a good loose area to get into during the next couple of weeks to engage 4HI/4LO and dick around a bit.

Yup, I probably should've listened. I'm just of that mindset that, "If it's true, I'd have expected my trusted go-to product to advertise the problem, surely someone would've bitched already and they'd pull the product?!"

It's unfortunate. There's so much hype and politic when it comes to fluids and [dino vs synthetic] that I - and I'm sure plenty of others - have a lot of trouble trying to figure out what's misinformation vs. opinion vs. truth.

Is there any reason y'all can think of that synthetic would be problematic in the front diff? Tundras didn't employ any kind of slip plates up front? Gauging #QTs to buy.

I Have been running Mobil-1 in the front diff and transfer case on my 4Runner, 100 series Land Cruiser...AND my Tundra. No problems whatsoever. And I also run it in the rear diffs of those as well. That's why it never crossed my mind to seek an alternative, and I was equally befuddled when I had a problem. I don't know what Toyota put in the diff when they made the truck nearly 20 years ago, but I don't think it was synthetic. I'm just regarding this as "street knowledge".

Sure seems to be 'street knowledge'. Holy crap man.

And yeah, what came out didn't resemble synthetic for the diff, it was thicker and creamier than even heavily used synth tends to look. The tc could've very well had synth, came out looking like honey as the pics show, but that'd probably more about lack of heat than anything.

    OK, new problem...

I've read enough about "pink milkshake" that I'm considering replacing the radiator before it fails. However, I can't find a Denso radiator anywhere. Further, since Denso has no stock, I can't even use their site to identify the correct Denso p/n for my application, so I can dig deeper looking for stock.

Are there any viable alternatives to Denso?

Looked up RockAuto, they only show Denso for DC trucks now too, which is diff't size. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,2004,tundra,4.7l+v8,1426935,cooling+system,radiator,2172

Maybe it's a nationwide supply chain shortage prob? I was able to use Denso site to find the part (EDIT: But for DC, oof):

    upload_2023-2-13_14-18-5.jpg

Sent a nastygram to Mobil1 telling them about my prob and asking what they'll do. Also sitting on hold with their 800 number.

Update, in case anyone else has issues like me. Mobil1 has a satisfaction claim process. 6-8 weeks for them to review, and you need a receipt to submit it, but generally speaking, they'll refund you on fluids after reviewing your case. I'm told claims are often paid out on cases like this where an LSD is involved.

Edit: Paperwork is off. I'll try to remember to let you degenerates know what comes of it.

Thanks...however, I have Access Cab, which is a different p/n. It is indeed some sort of nationwide shortage. <sigh>

That's what I chose in the 2nd screencap I took with the part number.

Oh wait. It says for Crew Cab. DOH.

Thus my frustration...Summit Racing says 221-0518 is for crew cab. The Toyota P/Ns are 164000F030, 164000F040.

According to the Toyota parts site, I need 16400-0F020. OEM not available at any price.

Rock Auto shows several items that fit (TYC, ADPI/PRO, et al)...but can I trust them?

Ok you gave me what I needed. Denso's website has a cross-reference section. Here you go, it's 0517 for AC/RC instead of 0518 for DC:

Yesir! Well I had a prerunning and knew for a while I needed to upgrade to a 4x4. Everyone's got a hard on for Tacos so ended up making money on the swap! same year, but the tundra is in better condition with less miles. Ridiculous.

So you got a 4x4 tundra with less miles in better condition for a 2wd Tacoma with more miles and you made money? When I was in the market for a 4x4 Tacoma 4 years ago and ended up getting a Tundra instead. I was amazed at how much better the deals were for First Gen Tundras, hence the reason I went that route instead of Tacoma. Ive never looked back, I much prefer my Tundra for many reasons and so glad I stumbled upon this gem of a truck!

Yup. Agreed. I always had my eyes out for a first gen 4x4 tacoma but the prices are insane. Almost double that of a prerunner. Had no intention of getting a tundra but saw the bel air shell and decided to check the tundra prices and dammmmmn got me a screaming deal! Going from a 4cyl to 8 has been a HUGE upgrade.

I believe I am running amsoil but I’d have to ask Jason to know for sure and I bet he doesn’t remember. He likes Lucas.
Granted, my LSD is no longer the factory one, my gears are new and REM’d and my ears likely can’t detect chatter.
