Perhaps the most exciting quote of the year. But don't talk to me, I know what I really want you to have and I can't recommend it in good faith.

Well, that hit's home. My truck will be my son's around his 19-21. He knows. His will be his sister's, I'll have a new build.

When you give it to him, will that be when you get a new ride? Or years before that?

@Shifty is way better at catching up with a multi-quote. I'm more of a :spam: I noticed. Fairly introspective of me.

    I'm pretty sure a 15-21 Tundra. But, maybe a 4W Gen 1.

Edit - I'm not reading well enough. Around the same time, but I should get something a year prior.

Not ignorance, my haste. 4WD. Although, all I want to do is go fast, so a pre-runner isn't a terrible idea. Except that I want to go deep as well. Deep as in the outback or whatever we call it.

Yeah when you have 4wd you end up doing more trails that are slow paced due to the terrain.

my timeline will hopefully put me in a newer truck a year or so before my son starts driving; I wouldn’t mind a 5.7………

Sounds like we are on similar paths. I'll likely get 4WD in 5.7, I'll need the up-front pull. I'm not staying in the CA desert after I retire. 2 trucks would be fun. I can't do it, or maybe I can - but there is some awesomeness in 2WD that is built from what I can see. And I only have a baby build.

You also can’t discount that it’s a 2wd, tires and driver make a huge difference! Our 2wd 4runner has taken us to some awesome places, with less wheel spin than the 4wd rigs with us… it’s definitely not built on the same level as your truck but it gets the job done.

For sure. That other weekend I was with all 4WD trucks. They can do stuff I can't, I know it. Didn't see it, we weren't in that terrain. But In that desert and those hills, I would race any of them. I doubt anyone else came close to 70.

It's the only way can catch up. I basically scroll go to last-unread, and each post I want to reply to I click the "multi-quote" button on. When I get to the very last thread, I click "Insert Quotes" on the bottom-left of to the reply box (it only appears after you click multi-quote one at least one reply). Then I just zip through and hope to jeebus I remember what the hell I wanted to say.

It's my head-lamp. Note that yellow spot is in the middle of a icy blue-white corona. It drives me nuts, but the thing was cheap, doesn't eat batteries, and it works. One of the Black Diamond units.

I've done it before. I hate doing it. Good, quality spring compressors are $500+ and I'd prefer not to eat into the budget. I've also learned, with two kids, that if you can pay a little extra here or there to make things a direct bolt-in and reduce hassle and ensure you can fit the task into the limited "no-kids window", it's goddamn worth it to do.

Ha! I'll always listen, I just may not do it.

My reality is this: I'm low mile, everything looks relatively good, and I prefer taking things in stages. Right now I just need a small attitude/altitude adjustment, starting with rubber and leveling (edit: or a small inch or so add).

I'm basically eyeballing 5100s and OME 2885s I think. Whatever I go with at this stage, I'm not looking for more than 2-2.5" up front and no up to 1" in rear. But I think I'd be happy right now with 1.5"-1.75" up front, nothing out back, and maybe some 1-1.5" spacers with either 275/70/17 or 285/70/17 and eyeballing in the direction of Falken Wildpeaks for the rubber.

My path was...I'm turning 60 this year. I have a 2004 Chevy Tahoe w/a 4.Great engine (148k miles) that I bought new. Have taken very good care of it all these years and I will never willingly part with it. It has towed my boats, campers, utility trailers and runs like a champ. However...my idea was it would be nice to have a new truck. I had my sights set on a new Sliverado ZR2 and was willing to pay the price (a weak and stupid thought) I figured I'm 60 why not spend $60k +?. Well, as fate would have it my elderly Father told me he was reluctant to drive his Tundra because the Check Engine Light was on and he didn't want to pay to diagnose/fix. He also drives a 2004 4Runner so he could still get around. Well, turns out I bought a cheapo Fixd reader which revealed a P0135 so I started some research and eventually replaced the front L R sensors myself. Passenger side took the longest. Anyway, the truck is mine now (thanks Dad!) and I couldn't be happier at this point. I am looking forward to passing this gem on to one of my three daughters. Likely my youngest who was born in the same month/year. Will I get a new truck? IDK. I'm not a big man so being able to see over the hood while I'm driving is a big plus to me. One concern I have is I don't have ABS. We get lots a rain here in FL so...maybe I need some braking practice? Can I add ABS to my setup?

PS on this - Budgets are real for me. Reliability and no premature fatigue is a huge issue at this point, this is still my DD even if I'm not driving it as much post-2020 lockdowns. Anything that adds in the need for extra work that may push me over a 2-3 hour window or leaves me in an Uber the next day doesn't work for me right now.

The reason you should not ask me is because I love what I have and want more. I wouldn't change the back except a bit. The front I would change but even that is not worth changing now. I never added it up but it's a lot. And I love it. But - 5100s are on the boys 4R and they are great. 275/70/17 are awesome. I miss them a bit. Wildpeaks I have not owned but they are good to look at and I'm sure everyone loves them for a reason. My best advice is keep rake, manage available travel.

I say 'leveled' but that usually looks rear-squat to me, so I was leaning toward 2nd notch on the 5100s. I think that puts me up 1.5 in front, which should leave half inch or so of rake if paired with 2885s but I'd need to look back at that? I'd need to go measure where I'm at center to fender to be sure, I swear I was ~2.25 difference last time I checked.

For the sake of ride quality, I'm totally down with going with a taller spring to run 1st notch also. I think the 5100+2885 combo hits the best balance I've seen.

Whatever it is, I need to say under $2500 for everything right now, which puts Fox, King and others totally out of the picture.

I'll get chastised for it but 5100s and 2885s rode like shit on my DC. Some cheap ass Sachs shocks are the same height and have much better ride characteristics.

You don't need fox or king. Billies are great and you have adjustability with them. And they are built within limits from what I can tell, so you can perch them wherever. But a 275 probably wants close to top notch. I feel like the way to go is setup your front suspension and tires. The rear is probably more important, but is based off the front. There seems to be some good stock rear spring adds/setups that deal with stance and weight and don't break the bank. So, you should be able to run those Billys at the top if you like and do modest stuff to the rear to prevent squat and/or handle weight. I wish I had the links, but someone will chime in if I'm full of it.
