Any risk of that going through the back window?

Not really. I did set the uprights so that I can move the whole thing back something like 8 inches though. A failed strap job of gear would be a problem...

I guess in a high speed crash there would be a problem as well. I'll have to think on that one.

    Lots o’ mods
After lots of waiting, picked up my Addicted Offroad bumper from the FedEx freight yard today. Dropped it off to get etched/primered. I must admit, the welds and general construction look VERY nice.

I was explaining the safety concern to my wife you brought up, she is not impressed with me. I don't know why I didn't see that. Anyway, she wants to know what truck gang thinks. It seems pretty clear to me (now, fak) that over bed needs the load shifted up, so in a crash it hits the cab and not the windshield, or flies into space. My glaring mistake is using 2" legs over the bed. Those 2" legs are for over a trailer, a cap/shell or roof. The Front Runner over bed legs are 6.5" from what I see on their site, but I'm going to call them anyway. There are also those full height setups, but I didn't go that direction.

    How on that?

Dang. Now I feel bad for pointing it out.

I'm not gonna lie, I was thinking about doing the same thing with my Bakflip to hold my kayaks I don't need to throw em in the bed anymore when I wanna go fishing. It wasn't until I saw the proximity to the glass, with the snuglid or whatever tilted up with the metal corner so close to the glass, I was like, "Ugh ... wait a sec..."

i dont think height is the problem, lower is better, might be the camera angle, but how tall could something be before it hits the cab/window when the tonneau is opened?

No, we are talking about driving 60 MPH into the car in front of you and your spare tire taking heads off.

Oh. I missed where you said you were gonna put a spare up there. A hard stop from 60 might carry the rack through with it.

But I like everything else about low...aesthetics, parking structure clearance, aerodynamics. But this back window thing is a problem...

Yeah, rack too. 60MPH would probably beat most rack setups, I don't want to test that one.

    Steel cable is your solution.

Tether the rack, or the rack and spare, to the bed using steel cable. You can anchor the bed-end of the cable wherever is convenient and sufficiently strong. Your cable length is determined by the position of the rack-end when the tonneau is 'open'. Think of it like steel cable limiting straps. Will it break the window in a head-on collision? Probably. But it'll keep the rack, and the rack's contents, out of the cab in a crash.

I picture two smallish cables at the cab-end of the rack and two more further back to spread the load and add redundancy.

I was gonna add, don't do the front only, as then you've created a catapult. But you got it.

But now I wanna see someone put a catapult in their bed. Then I remembered somebody has extra leafs laying around......

Thinking about this over night, the two mistakes I made were too low and too narrow. Truck specific designs just build that in, I on the other hand, just farmed it.

The height should be easy, just get taller legs. I can't make the rack wider, but I can get two load bars and stack the rack on them. Make the front load bar 6" wider and through bolt it to the rack with grade hardware. That's my stop bar in a crash. Mount my two baby 6" light bars on the ends as scene lights and pretend I planned it that way.

Rear load bar at current rack width, also grade bolted

Now that im home, i need to poke around and see if my rear speakers have been unplugged. Is there a single plug, possibly on the driver side that would disconnect both rear speakers?

the shop it was at before i got it had to replace the latch on the drivers door while the door was stuck closed. Might they have disconnected something to gain access?

I can't recall on the '02, whether the rear speakers are on a separate connector, but there's definitely nothing in the front door cards that would impact the rear door speakers, not that I've ever seen or heard of.

On some vehicles, it's not uncommon for the main power plug on the head unit to have the power, ground, and a few other things bunded on one connector with the front channel outputs, then the rear channel on a secondary.

To know for sure, would need to know if your truck has amp or not, then reference EWD for your truck to see connector layout. Maybe a pic of the back of the factory HU would help with that one.

But yeah, each rear door speaker has a single plug. It's not uncommon to forget to re-plug them when the rear door cards are off. Apparently happens with tweeters on the front doors too.

A headache rack would also solve the problem of something possibly coming through the window.

As shifty said, the rear speakers have a separate connector at the head unit. Is it JBL or standard?

Yeah I looked at those as an option, but I would have to fab something to fit what I have. I just had a funny conversation with a new sales guy. I just wanted to mix and match some parts and he kept trying to build a new rack.

Curious to hear the answer on this @Sirfive

I don't know if the earlier models had an amplified non-JBL solution, my '06 does, I'm non-JBL and amplifier.

I hate unbolting stuff, but I'd probably be popping out my HU and looking for the connector on the back. And if there's only one plug to the back of the HU, that's a good time to trace the wires on the head unit to see if they plug into an amp just behind where the HVAC controls are (and if so, there may be two separate connectors, one for frontspk+pwr, one for rear, which may be unplugged)

Let me see if I can find a thread ...

@Sirfive here you go. Here's proof some non-JBL trucks have amps in the dash. This is @ThatYeti 's 2000. Look closely at these two pics for info.

And a close-up of that harness you'll be checking out (NOTE: the labels are WRONG on the bottom two connectors):

I was hoping for a connector to the rear doors. I doubt the 6-disc has ever been out or hassled.

gonna be future me’s problem. Today is puppers first river day.
