I stretched out my old girls legs. Road trip to Rice Texas from the Bay Area in CA. Picked up my new trailer. Stayed in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, CA

    4174 miles

I’m very proud of her. Thirsty for sure. My math told me I was getting 9.63 mpg average. Trailer weighs 2500lbs dry.

I had a small issue where after I drove for a few hours then stopped for gas. I had a crank no start issue. Waited about 10 min then she would start. Any input on that would be appreciated.

im still on the fence of a 4.10 gear swap.. im not unhappy with my trucks performance with the 3.91. but a little extra RPM at 80 probably would HELP gas mileage in my case. at 85 im doing like... 2400 rpm

What would you consider ideal RPM at 85mph?

Honestly.. I don’t know anymore. I just know at 70 I’m too low. 85 I remember only because it was close to a number I can remember. 4.10 or 4.30 would be the go to for me. 4.10 is easiest because a sequoia front diff already is 4.10. So that’s an easy swap in. 4.10 should be good for 100-150rpm bump. 4.30 200-250 rpm. Every engines slightly different at where they’re more efficient. But 70mph I’m definitely lugging the engine (even if the trans doesn’t hunt)

The other thing to remember is the lower the gear, the weaker the ring and pinion.. because smaller teeth. I don’t like the idea of 4.80+ on a 8.4” diff towing

After my lift and tires, I'm pretty sure I was at 3k rpm when it said 80. I'm gonna have to double check it when it gets out of the shop.

must not’ve been in lockup. Im at 2200 at 70, and your bigger tires should have 8.2% longer legs. You should be around 2500 at 85

Do an economy test, fill it up, run a loop to work and back or whatever, then fill it up and note what it burned, then do it again with OD off, and see what that burns.

Looks like a great time! I like that trailer! Ill be going all next week to camp in Nevada, a little Utah and AZ and then back in Mojave Desert before back home to So Cal.

About your truck not starting, Ive had that problem too! It starts fine but after driving a bit and stopping for gas or a hike or something, when I go to start again it cranks but doesnt wanna turn over. Or it sounds like its going to but then dies. Never have been able to figure that out but it doesnt happen often. Its wierd cuz it seems to only happen after ive been driving it for a bit and its warmed up.

I may be talking out of my ass on this, but I swear I'd read on here elsewhere with others having this problem - there have been several by the way, you're not the first - but I feel like I recall someone mentioning something with the fuel pump relay. I'm always questioning batt/grnd cables in no-start but this no-start-when-hot-but-starts-after-cooling is pretty unique.

Anyway, any time you have a no-start condition, this video has a helpful list of tests you can do easily, especially with the under-hood relay.

I searched the issue just now and I have in the past, looks like there are several FGT forum topics stating, "wont start after its hot", or " long, rough crank when warmed up". So it does seem to be an issue others have had.

Definitely is recurring. I can't recall who all had it here, there were I think two members west of the Mississippi, and one east, maybe @FirstGenVol was the latter?

Just a heads up, the youtube channel: Tinkerer's Adventure, is insanely informative! The guy specializes in Toyota suspension and talks all about the physics of Toyota suspension in a really in depth easy to understand way. Definitely recommend checking out his videos.

If it cranks and dies, you have to turn it all the way off and then back on or it won’t crank. At least with a 2000 model.

Thanks for sharing - this could be really helpful for me.

I tend to feel I'm somewhat suspension ignorant with new-to-me models. When you start getting into angles, considerations of changing angles of things, consequences of changing out parts, I can get stymied.

Most of what I've done to vehicles in the past is lowering, using shackles, blocks, drop spindles, springs or cups w/bags, but rarely deal with swapping out, like, control arms. I've notched a couple of trucks to get there, but never had cases which required wheel spacers, tower spacers, or other things to get you in the air.

Should be fun when the time comes to finally do something with lifting my FGT.

I think youre gonna learn a lot from his videos. He uses physics and factual demonstrations to explain why something does what it does and ends up dispelling some myths that are out there about different components.

You'll wanna go by a GPS app for sure. That 80 on the speedo might be more like 90 on GPS.

Since you have an earlier truck you can get a yellrbox and correct your speedo. They have a plug and play, you'll want to ask them for at least 3 meters of harness (no extra cost) to reach your speed sensor.

Went to order a new radiator from my local Toyota homie. Said they’re on National back order. Wahh wahhh

luckily it’s just preventative maintenance… hopefully they start coming in soon.

in the mean time, enjoy the video I finally put together of a few of us crossing the Buffalo River in the Ozarks. Thanks to the snorkel my truck didn’t ingest any water. Lol

Yup, that. 00-03 are simple plug and play. 04 seems to be hit or miss, 05/06 are a bit more work but can be done.

For early models I learned that the 2wd speed sensor is on the transmission, but the 4wd speed sensor is further back on the transfer case. You need more length than what I ordered for myself, 2.5 to 3 meters should be perfect. Details in here.
