Ah, virgin crete. Time to change oil on a tundra without removing the skid plate. Christen that fresh surface for good luck.

He has a ton of cool equipment. lathe, pipe threading machine, mig and tig welders, plasma cutter, cnc machine. When we were in college he would always be welding in flip flops and swim trunks. He was dressed for the cold this morning, but dude was still rocking flip flops. He got pissed off with Balljoint kit I brought and just made some the correct size out of pipe and scrap, He's making the pipe even on the lathe in this picture. In flip flops.

Yup. Did that about 25 years ago and won't do it again.

Didn't mind the sparks nailing my skin, no biggie. What hurt like hell was the damn sunburn, worse than being out on the lake fishing with no sunscreen for 3-4 hours. And I was sitting cross-legged while doing it so the burn pattern looked goofy as hell.

If it's just a tack here or there, I'm not worried, but when you're laying beads, different ballgame.

All the same, wish I had that kinda space. If I did, I'd probably still have my MIG and plasma.

Dude, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said to myself, man I wish I wore sleeves when I was welding……
I think it’s worse than a sunburn, I peel like I’ve got psoriasis.

I dunno what else to call it other than sunburn. But it sucks. It went straight to leather-like in less than 2 days and peeled for weeks before it finally cleaned up.

And speaking of cleanup, I realized today I've never really looked closely at the inside of my back slider, so I checked it out a little closer.

When I got the truck, the thin plastic cover for the slider was off. I never put it back on b/c I assumed there was a reason why and I'd look into it. I've never seen evidence of leakage, but today the sun was hitting it just right and I was surprised to see (A) one of the brackets back there is really purplish and (B) it looks like some water probably came in at some point, maybe the drain was clogged (PHM posted on how to unclog the drains, it's not hard, but mine don't look clogged).

That light tan soil is what one of the previous owners had on a road he drove often. There's a fine film of it everywhere inside the cabin.

Anyway, I wish someone sold a foam-and-seal kit to replace all this. Just like the door tracks, the channel felts on this window are worn, so it rattles, just like the front windows do if you crack 'em in the 1"-4" range. One of these days I probably should pop the rear seat out and get a better look, check for leaks, clean all dirt up. I think I'll start with a toothbrush and shop vac, then hit it with some lemon-scented Microban.

Oh, man. Don't come visit my garage when I'm in full mad-scientist mode. I haven't fallen yet, but I do stretch these ankles pretty regularly. And I take a fair bit of damage on my lower legs from sharps poking out irregularly.

Wait. You guys pull your skidder to change the oil?

Adidas slides offer the most protection of all welding flops.
And I have got to stop welding with my legs crossed. Those burns are brutal.

I don’t, I do the reach through the hood and spin the filter off from above. This sends a torrent of used oil splashing down onto the chin-skid distributing its volume like a lawn sprinkler. The flattened air filter box (shiny side up) makes a nice flow director. I just cram it under the filter on top of the skid, hanging off the back to make a ramp to the oil catch pan. 100% of the time it works 60% of the time at preventing a huge mess. Cue the dry sweep.

[when I change my own oil] I just drain it first and then when the draining oil diminishes to drips, I throw a rag (some rags?) under the filter and spin that ho off there. Put the new one on, pull the rags, fill the oil, and resume partying. Just enough oil on the skidder to prevent rust...also keeps a little bit of my driveway from rusting.

It sucks having to pop off the skid every time, but it's the only way I can fully avoid a mess.

I'm running full syn and changing every 8-10k so no crazy burden for me to pop off 5 bolts.

I still have to change the oil in the 911...which happens to be the easiest of the three.

But I'm interviewing tomorrow evening for a new gig. If that goes through, I'll be back on primary oil change duty.

I gave up on oil myself. I go to the dealer for it. Figure it pays for itself on resale value for the carfax data and I get a free inspection once a year for something I have to get done anyway.

    Good luck!

I was the same way, really. But when I bought the truck, the stealership gave me a lifetime CarFax account for the truck somehow. And CarFax lets me input my maintenance, which seems to show up when you look up the VIN. Dunno.

They offer it for everyone. It's what I use to track maintenance on my vehicles. It's pretty nice since a lot of shops report the service already and if you DIY it has an option to upload receipts.

Well, you still have to buy the supplies, dispose of the oil, clean up, etc. Well into the "worth it" to me, particularly for older vehicles. Since I drive so little, I'm on once a year oil changes. The tundra oil changes are particularly reasonable, something like $60 I think? I'd rather spend my time crimping. And the inevitable drips, I feel bad about, b/c it's going to wash into the ocean, we are so close.

I did rather enjoy doing the gear oil though. That felt more purposeful. But at the same time, disposing of the used oil really did suck. I think that's the part which makes it so lousy for me. If I had a legit shop with a large collection pool/bucket/whatever and some designated space it might be a different story but with 0 extra space I can't leave that stuff lying around and the 20 minutes to take it somewhere and dump it during biz hours + another 10 to log that I did the work, I dunno, I'd just rather ride my bike home and back to the dealer :)

Mostly, though, I like the 2nd set of eyes to look for problems, especially given their financial incentive to find them.

I used to be on the same page with you. Dealing with the disposal wasn't really worth it to me.
However, there were a few instances where the only local shop charged a couple friends of mine for oil changes that were never actually done. That's when I decided that I would do my own everything because I don't trust anyone else.

Not sure what shops you guys go to, but I just drop mine off at the counter at Autozone and they take care of it. Takes 2 minutes. Maybe you guys are more rural than me though.

I know I can trust my dealer to remove my unsecured husky floor mat, that much I can count on :)

I mean, I trust my local dealer. Mostly because if they f up then they can deal with it.

I dunno. I can have all the supplies delivered to me, so I don't need to leave the house. I have a catch basin that holds 10qt, and 3 auto parts stores and 1 recycle-anything place within 1 mile of me, and I save my old 5qt oil jugs so it's just a drop-off-at-counter affair. All-in it's 30mins of my time. If I go to the dealership, I'm looking at 30 minutes to get there and back, plus 1.5-2.5 hours wait time, it's just not worth it. And the $60 option, even using coupons, only gets me regular dino oil, not synthetic, 25% of the time they forget to reset the oil light at both dealerships I've used, it just ... I'd rather just do it myself, save the hassle, know it's done, and honestly, it easily shaves 90mins of BS and hassle off.

Any big box auto parts store typically takes old oil, and will have a big container in the back for you to pour into, or leave your containers behind. Some fireplaces in smaller towns I've lived have recycle catches on-premise, and often times clothing donation boxes, I always try to bring the FD guys a box of donuts or cookies when I dropped off, just as a pre-emptive 'thanks for your service'.

And yeah. There are far too many places that are shady. At least once a year I see some local news exposé where they go around shop to shop and weed out the shady ones.

    I hear you.

I’ve waited at the dealership before. Free wifi and coffee, no kids. Pre pandemic it was pleasant.

Now I just drop and go. I can run or ride. If I run I can take the dog. I usually ride back to pick it up. About 8 miles along the coast in San Diego and a one way trip so it goes quickly.

if I lived elsewhere, with heat and cold, likely a different story.

I meant to say, that same shop actually does have an oil furnace, so I drop the oil off there. The closest auto store that offers that is 15 miles away. I know it's not that far, but I'm spoiled in my small town. My morning commute is all the way across town, that's almost 2 miles!

Oil changes are weird because they are one of the few things that cost around the same to do yourself as to pay a shop. I still change my own but I really don't save much money. Having to take all the used oil to the recycling center is a pain in the ass.

I mix mine half and half with diesel and use it to stain my fence, low boy trailers floor, and shed ramp. Works awesome.

Today I look back what we did in the 60’s/70’s and wonder how I’m still alive. Yes we screwed up and dumped oil in the ditch, washed our hands in gasoline, soaked our cuts in kerosene but the hashish was great !
