Alternator was iffy for a few days, completely stopped charging two days ago but luckily made it home before batt died. New alternator arrived just in time.

PS - the other person who registered on here as 'Shifty' must hate me. They literally signed up 3 years ago, spent 3 days on the forum, and never came back. But they accidentally get tagged constantly on there by people mistaking him for me. I don't even think that guy made any posts. Kinda wish the mods would kill that account if it didn't actually make any posts.

    Not even close.

I posted these before but here's some cutaway pics:

    Open:
    IMG_20210519_143239.jpg

LSD style 1, not my favorite design.
    IMG_20210519_143358.jpg

LSD type 2. Lots of clutches, very good design:
    IMG_20210519_143221.jpg

Torsen LSD (gear type, no clutches):
    IMG_20210519_143211.jpg

Locker, gears mesh together under load. Make lots of noises in parking lots if not gentle on throttle.
    IMG_20210519_143146.jpg

    Electric locker:
    IMG_20210519_143149.jpg

So the TRD Kazuma is a clutch type, not a torsen like @empty_lord originally thought.

    Could of sworn it was.

but maybe I’m thinking of the other TRD units I’ve looked at in the past. I’d prefer Torsen. As of now I know of no way to rebuild a Toyota clutch pack lsd.

    Really?

I just checked one shim size and the clutch plates and both showed available online?

So for LSD, @assassin10000, do you have specific units you like best? Do you know if our base LSD is type 1 or 2? Are Torsen units the ideal? Is it possible to buy one of them somewhere? Which style does the Nitro most closely resemble?

Is electronic locker really the best all purpose option?

Reflecting on where I started with the truck and how far it's come in 2 years I've owned it. Also thankful that I don't have to drive it that much and put a lot of miles on it and rather, I get to drive it and enjoy it when I want. Certainly a lot of learning has occurred in the process and some mistakes/wasted money, but I think it is much better now than when I got it. Only a couple of things that I would do differently. I likely would have/should have waited until locking down the lift and suspension before buying new tires. The ones that were on the 4Runner take-offs that I purchased used were pretty beat, but could have been drivable for a couple of months while this work was going on. I'm still keeping an eye out for SCS F5s or SR8s in matte black (I know, good luck). I am definetely wanting to get bigger tires in the future. The proportions looks "off" to me in the last picture.

I still have my retrofit headlights to do and I want to finish the wrap on the front grill and mirror caps. Was thinking about my wish list/to-do list last night and update that given where I'm at on this build. I was happy to have checked off a lot of things this year. Where I'm at now is as follows:

    • Archive Garage medium springs and u-bolt flips with speed bumps (maybe hammer hangers?) -- Maybe. Need to drive for a bit with the current setup/add-a-leaf and see if that's enough.
    • Colored matched shell (this week!).
    • Stealth camping truck bed build (project for this winter).
    • SCS F5s 16x8s or SR8 wheels in matte black. Or maybe TRD Pro 4Runner take-offs in matte black?
    • 255/80R17s or 285/70R17s?.
    • Steps that don't suck or look ugly.
    • Finish the chrome removal on the logos.

Here is the starting point (June 2019):
    00H0H_iHyDAGS3SHy_1200x900.jpg
    And this week:

OEM is type 2. Has 14 or so plates a side.

My favorite that I've owned/used was a Cusco RS 2-way.

Torsen is decent as long as both wheels stay down, if one is airborne it acts like an open. It is torque biasing. It also requires the least maintenance and doesn't need any special fluids/friction modifier.

Powertrax, Nitro, Eaton all make a Torsen that fits our trucks. Toyota did too iirc, you'd need one from something like a Supra or Lexus ISxxx, or whatever car was equipped with it.
    https://www.nitro-gear.com/Toyota-8-4-Worm-Gear-Limited-Slip-p/tors-t8.4.htm
(The powertrax & nitro look identical in their product pictures.)

Electric locker wouldn't do any good until it's engaged. I wouldn't call it the best.

Whats 'best' depends on your use. Serious off roading a locker or spool is best (mechanical, air or electric). Snow, sand, dirt and road use an LSD is better. Clutch type is always engaged, Torsen can act like an open in some conditions. Ymmv.

I'm an Archive fan boy. @Openbaffle
I'll be putting the hangers on next week with a 1.75" DOM center tube. I've been looking at frame flex a lot with my bed off. I can flex my stock hangers pulling on the bottom nut (not top where the leverage is) with a short wrench. The u-bolt flip is very nice. But if I only did one, it would be hangers. Especially with drop shackles that are longer, which I used to tame those MD springs.

Drained my rear axle this morning and confirmed I do not have any kind of limited slip. Bummer. Refilled with Amsoil. Those squeeze bags sure are nice.

Also pulled the trigger on a bumper kit. I wanted something very, very simple which I could not find. Ran across a DIY kit from JCR Offroad for a Jeep Cherokee. It looks close to the same width and I think I can make it work. I don't know how to link it or I would. Wish me luck

I replaced some vacuum lines under the hood chasing my horrible idle. It did nuffin. This issue is getting worse and worse. It idles down til it almost dies, then jumps up to about 2k, then repeats. Here's a video for anyone who hasn't seen it:

I also pulled my codes. Apparently my CE light is burned out.
