    A bunch
My main guess for putting it above the frame rails is crash test ratings. Sweers mentioned the fuel tank is on the passenger side so the transfer case can move backwards better. So where could the battery be placed between the frame and not negatively affect the crash test ratings?

True story. How many millions in damages did those faulty Samsung phone batteries do? I know of a case where an knockoff battery from Amazon in a HP laptop ignited an RV while a family slept and killed half of them… look up how many homes have caught on fire from hoverboard batteries…

Never buy 3rd party / aftermarket / knockoff replacement li-ion batteries IMO.

Folks will be shocked to find out that the batteries are part of the rear heated seat system.

Temp sensors will lower the rear window and open the pano roof if things get too hot.

I don't think the Tundra battery is Lithium

"The nickel-metal-hybrid battery pack positioned beneath the rear seat cushion has a capacity of 1.9 kWh"

you are correct. the lithium comment was in response to the other person I was responding to who was talking about phones and laptops and whatnot. Those are lithium. Which would be significantly worse under seats...

I guess it's better than a hydrogen fuel cell under the rear seat. That would probably cook you alive if it ignited under pressure.

I don't know why all the concern. Its Toyota, not Tesla. If they wanna put batteries under you, or hydrogen cells for that matter, they wouldn't do it haphazardly. Prius have had batteries in the car forever.

Notably their 2016-2018 issue wasn't directly related to the batteries but a power control module that would be triggered by frayed wire harnesses.

There is a combustion engine under the hood that produces toxic gases, few hundred pounds of highly flammable gasoline under the bed etc etc. I'm sure the engineers took everything into account and not to mention Toyota corporate legal team.

    Working on it...
This is a non-issue. The Prius has been around for 25 years; the lift back design with the batteries in the passenger compartment since 2004. Zero issues. As their hybrid technology has expanded into other models (Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Sienna) it has continued to be a non-issue, even as some models have switched to lithium ion. There have also been aftermarket lithium ion add-on batteries available for years. No issues.

The Honda Hybrids also have batteries in the passenger compartment. Aside from being an inferior systems to Toyota, zero issues.

Lexus CT200h and the hybrid versions of their cars (similar design to the Camry and Corolla) - guess what? Zero issues with the battery location.

And speaking of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, Toyota has one of those too, the Mirai. Just as safe, if not more so, than gasoline.

Mirai has the tanks under the seat too if i remember correctly… they design these things to not kill its occupants.

And the gas tank is how much further away? Not to say that it can’t. But almost all Toyota hybrids are the same locations.
