I got to thinking about this, as I scan through all the threads in the new truck, comparing power and mpg and payload, etc.

We already have very limited storage in the cab. Anyone know where the hybrid batteries will be?

Under the rear seat in some shape or form. You lose the underseat storage that the non hybrid models have

and the seats are also set higher and you have a few hundred pounds of dangerous chemicals under your kids asses. stupid unacceptable place to put it. I'd get the non-hybrid for that reason alone and I was looking forward to a good hybrid for my next truck. Hopefully by the time I would be buying a new truck, they'll have figured out a better place to put them.

Yeah, what I figured. I guess it’s a challenge for all truck makers, firing any storage for “stuff” into the cab.

Yeah, same. But really, there’s nowhere else except the bed. At least, the back seat area is better protected from rear-end collisions than a Prius….

So are you concerned just because they're hybrid batteries? GM has been putting the batteries for their cars (non hybrid) under the back seat for years.

The video shows where the batteries are, and the TRD Pro does not come without the hybrid option.

I guess that's another of the abundant reasons I've never owned a GM? lol

Nasty chemicals don't belong under my children. Even if it was under the physical cab (like the gas tank on most vehicles) at least it's out of the inside of the cab.

While I don't disagree with you in theory, better not let them use cell phones, iPads, laptops or Airpods of any other wireless ear buds then.

Ford put them between the framerails for their Powerboost engine. Seems like a pretty good solution, protected and they retain some underseat storage.

The batteries are safer in the cab - how many sharp objects have hit that area of the interior? And NiMH batteries are extremely safe - absolute worst case with them is hydrogen offgassing from overcharging. If it was a Li-Ion battery it would be a different story since those have potential for very dangerous fires.

Cleaning chemicals used on interiors is far more dangerous to people than NiMH batteries are.

It’s simple science and I don’t understand it at all… My brain couldn’t help but go to “It’s harmless hydrogen” what’s the worst that could happen? Now, do they factor the accumulation of hydrogen in the cab against the payload? Payload at the start of your 4 hour trip is 1600, at the end it’s 1650…

Loss of storage does suck, but I don’t think having them under the rear seat is dangerous.

Another reason having the batteries under the seat sucks is the cooling. I saw in some pictures there’s a vent on the right side. It looks like a similar design to how the batteries in my hybrid Corolla are cooled. So now you have another filter to change out and you have to keep that vent clear at all times. If your kids are like my kids, there are coats and backpacks and blankets and all kinds of chit back there when we are traveling. I assume a hot battery will give an alert on the dash (yet another reason to yell at the kids). E7CC919F-3BF5-45D3-8560-12F6445FFAA0.jpg

You quoted the post in which I mentioned the gas tank without reading the post where I mentioned the gas tank, didn't you? Shame... lol.

As I said in another post on the same subject, I get all the engineers and mechanics are going to crap all over me and tell me now I'm worrying about nothing. But f that. I have trust issues and hundreds of pound inside the cab right under the sets isn't going to get my endorsement. It just isn't. I'd accept it even if if was under the cab like gas tanks (although maybe not the two together...) but not IN the cab.

And yes, there have been nasty lithium fires from cell phones burning people. Lithium is bad. Another reason EV's aren't ready for prime time yet either. Lithium is literally air-reactive. It burns when exposed to fricken AIR!!

yeah that grate for air flow is a concern for me. what happens on the off chance you get nasty fumes venting from the pack? guess where its going ... into the cab. not quite as concerned as the pack is under the seats as the federal requirements are probably pretty strict for it being in a living space compared to being under the bed.

side benefit (outside of northern tier states winters) is that the battery stays more in its temperature range compared to under the bed, but then again, cabins can get pretty dang toasty in sun belt states.

its probably multiple trade offs between being in the cab and under the bed, with being in the cab the winner.

i guessing the big push was since the electric motor is between the engine/transmission the shorter cable lengths help being closer than having to route to 2 different electric motors in front and back of the vehicle.

its also probably do to weight distribution being closer to center of the truck, probably also helps with towing since you are not putting so much additional weight near the rear tongue when pulling, adding to more front in the air problems.

Won't get that one as I told myself in 15 more years when I need a new truck, I want a CM + 6.5' bed so I'm out on the pro. They will never make a long-bed cm pro for obvious reasons so I'd get a decent spec'd truck with CM, 6.5' bed and the off road package. And that really cool screen... lol.

Not knocking the pro for what it is, but not what I would be looking for in a new truck. My 5.5' bed is too small. I won't get another one.
