I completely agree. I wouldn't touch the top end besides MAYBE valve springs, but if you're not spinning it up higher than stock then I wouldn't even do that.

Rods, pistons, studs. That covers 99% of what actually "needs" upgrading.

Hate to hear this, sorry man!:(

I have the solenoid, inline check valve (7 PSI Crack Pressure), and of course the nozzle has an integrated check valve too, inline and cap filters. Also, the controller is powered by a relay connected to an upfitter switch and the switch is connected to the accessory fuse.

If this catastrophic failure in the water methanol system is related to a controller malfunctioning then none of these things will prevent it to occur. If I detect something suspicious I can deactivate the system immediately using the switch but I need an indicator (especially for my lack of experience with this systems). This make me think in the following:

    1. Add an additional independent FAILSAFE device.

    2. Add a gauge to measure the flow in the water/meth line.

    3. Add a LED light and/or buzzer (not loud, not continue) powered by the same power wires of the pump.

I saw this in the manual but they are not available in the website (wondering why:monocle:):

Most of us at least use an external led light when the pump is spraying. I use a bright green led. I can see it in my field of view.

A water/meth flow gauge is overkill for these situations. A simple LED to say when it’s spraying is plenty adequate.

Just to clarify that the AEM kit comes with an external LED light that I installed above the SCG-1 boost controller gauge. But the idea is to add another (different color) isolated from the water/meth. system connected directly to the pump as @Mdl and @centex mentioned above.

We suspect it happened when the motor was running, as one of the freeze frame DTC data logs (not HP tuners). Was showing -15% fuel trims (LTFT not STFT, so it happened long enough for it to lock). And we had that thing dialed within a few % of 0. The only way it pulls that much fuel (especially when cold, if anything it should add). Would be if there was additional, non-expected fuel content. And for the trims to pull it, in that short of a time, it would have had to be running and somewhat up to temp.

I don't have a cross section of the AEM controller (I'll call them to confirm), but MAP sensors have a gel filler, which, my guess, is to dampen the signal for a cleaner voltage output. I wonder if the gel, due to it being cold, locked it into a False boost reading, causing it to spray, during a prolonged idle. I am not sure if the remote start would have tried to start the truck if it stalled out, or the high idle and colder temps were just enough to keep it running...

On the controller, there is a 15amp fuse right on the side. Could pull that out if the vehicle is going to sit in extreme cold conditions, when a remote start is used. This would stop anything from falsely firing, without the wiring in and mounting an extra power switch.

Wish there was a better explanation or reason of why/how. We are definitely trying to wrap our brains around this as well.

I'll second Brian here, this group has got to have one of the best communities we have ever worked in. You can tell there is a true love for this platform and openness for making it better for anyone here. Thanks for all of the feedback and ideas!

I was just thinking about the build. I agree, valve springs and retainers would be a solid idea to combat possible valve float and hold the boost behind the valves properly as the inevitable quest for "just one more PSI starts". Since the motor is apart anyway, a small addition for the extra power foundation.

Thanks to @TurboKits for all the additional support today. XAT order is placed and there is a solid plan in place for the build, including break-in procedures. Yes, it includes Blackstone reports!

Baselining my future Stage ??? build here since I'm likely 2'ish months out:

    Motor (NEW):
XAT "base" build long block (https://xatracing.com/XAT-3UR-full-build.html)

Base build includes fully assembled engine, ready to drop in:
        • BC ARP2000 rods
        • Manley pistons, 10.0:1 compression ratio
        • Full OEM new engine gasket kit
        • All new timing parts (chain, guides, tensioners, etc.)
        • ACL rod/main bearings, OEM thrust washer
        • Block honing with torque plate
        • Hot tanked engine
        • XAT modified high performance oil pump
        • Ported intake/exhaust ports
        • Valve job
        • ARP head studs
        • ARP main studs
        • Heads bolted to block, timing set
        • New valve stem seals
    Additional Options added:
      • BC valve spring & retainer kit
      • BC standard size valves
    Power Adder:
    TurboKits.com Stage 2:
        • Precision 7675 turbo
        • TurboKits.com 31"x11.75"x3" Front Mount Intercooler (FMIC)
        • TurboKits.com heat coating
        • DW650cc Injectors
        • DW340lp fuel pump
        • Innovate SCG-1 Boost Controller
        • AFE Power 21-90023 - aFe Pro Dry S air filter
        • ***AEM water/methanol injection (500cc)
Possible precautions/additional upgrades to support above:
    IPT valve body upgrade
    Transgo shift kit

Motor ordered January 21, 2025. Estimated 2 month delivery window (dependent upon machine shop backlog) estimates motor to arrive late March 2025. Towing season starts May 1, 2025 and the motor requires 4-5 oil changes within the first 1500 miles during break/wear-in. It'll be another tight schedule this spring, but, finding the silver lining, what a great way to capture performance of a built motor, Stage 2 kit, under high loads? There will be others who can test Stage 2 on stock motor (@centex & @Jego ). I'll be continuing the Blackstone analysis as I try to climb back to a 5k mile OCI like I was chasing with the turbo on my stock block. I'll likely be dropping the transmission pan and sending the VB off for the work since I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing there.

Wow! After all, this is a huge improvement! Can't wait to see all these come together and the end performance improvements! Knowing how well you document everything this is going to be a lot of good data for the community! I am excited to know and learn more about your setup!

I am working on a few things at the same time. But, for the turbo kit setup project I am making the final updates to the second video about the AEM kit install. The harness and fuse box relocation video comes next.

I think everyone knows it wasn't the plan, but I'm glad to have documented as much as I could along the way giving people the opportunity to watch, learn, ask questions, express concerns and curiosities, and then to see that 1) a turbo can scoot and 2) based on the oil analysis and all the logging - without causing harm under extreme duty. The last report I sent in before the water/methanol issue should close the chapter on all of Stage 1 and give some serious insight into Stage 2 since it captured all of the road tuning and testing. I'll capture Stage 2 as part of my continued build, but it's probably not going to be as meaningful since the motor won't be stock. It'll just be more of a passing of the baton.

You guys need to speed up the installs of Stage 2 so someone can break my goal this kit into the 4s. :)

Would love to speed up the install but there’s about a week lead time on shipping at the moment. Being mine is a daily driver it’ll be piece mealed in doing the install on all the support elements that can be installed while leaving the truck functional until I get a weekend to actually do the turbo portion.

If using tape, warm tape is critical. I think that alone would have saved me nearly 1/2 my install time. A heat gun on low works great. Looking forward to hearing how smoothly things go.

Updates in bold. More to follow as XAT works internally on possibly handling the transmission mods.

I've decided I'm bleeding once and won't be messing with things once they are back in the vehicle. Not for a while, anyways.

He just means the oil pan already has the drain fitting installed for the turbo. That way, he doesn't have to pull it off and do it again on a fresh motor.

This. XAT will install a stock oil pan, but then I'd have to open it back up to install one with the drain fitting, so they're going to swap mine in instead. Easy, but wasn't a guarantee they'd be willing to do it.

Them including a brand new OEM water pump as part of the build was a pleasant surprise. I was assuming I'd have to provide that.

@centex - One step closer! We've been building them per order on the engine jig, that way if any adjustments are needed, we can do it on the fly! Check out the second half of the video, perfect fit on the vband, 0 tension all bolted up!

That's awesome! Now if HPT can figure out why it doesn't want to log all the channels we'll be in business.

Yes, very odd, glad we added the step to get stock, before turbo logs, imagine us going round and round and round thinking something we did flashing it messed it up!!

what's the chances that I could get a GX470 turbo kit? lol. I've seen some links to ebay kits for the Landcruiser and 1st gen Tundra 4.7's. Probably another year before I'm ready to do any forced induction upgrades.

Wed have to build and test on the truck. No idea how close it would be, if at all. Where are you located?

Depending on where, we have a long-time amazing builder we've worked with, actually specializes in Toyotas, older 3SGTE MR2s. Company is Nixspeed, outside of Denver, but they could potentially take our kit and custom install it for you?

Because there was a slight anomaly, I'll share what I wrote to Blackstone since it is important in the discussion given that the very next morning it decided to try the BoostJuice Challenge it found on the TikTok. Hope this is helpful for the next guys up. I know this will be my baseline for the new motor when it is installed.

    Notes/Comments to Blackstone:
"This is the first 4k mil interval since the turbo was installed. The "modification" of this OCI is an upgrade to Stage 2 turbo with fuel injectors and pump. Includes 1/2 miles towing and highway on Stage 1.5, then the rest are tuning of Stage 2 at 7-9psi. Has 100 miles on it since I picked it up. Want to ensure everything looks good and that I'm on my way to 5k mile OCIs. This was a clean sample, taken warm."
