Yeah, I was thinking quick to add some spacers to the hood mounts, getting the back / windshield side of the hood off the weather strip/sealing surface, but wanted to make one change at a time. However, yes, agree, pull cool air in, evacuate warm air out!

Saw the logs, looks great. Loving the IATs!

Use the 2.5 Gen hood bulge as your intake. Should be able to create some venting system under the hood to distribute accordingly. With the BD 40” Light Bar up there and the holes drilled behind it provide an air stream for sure. Whatever you do I am sure it could be made cheaper than a fiberglass hood with a scoop on it for air intake

Yeah, just for initial testing. If it works out, we can looks to make it a bit more slick!

Since the 2014's Stage 1 Tune has been done since the DYNO in Feb, I don't really have any logs to compare too that aren't in Jan and Feb when it's 20-30* out. However, just by the look and the feel, it seems to keep the IATs a few degrees cooler while cruising, seems to be pulling in a tad more dense air as well, I had to drop the duty cycle on the SCG1 from 16% to 10% to get back under 5 PSI and the AFRs went to the lean side a tick, so I do feel it's getting cooler, denser air. The IAT recovery after a boosted run seem quicker as well. It's not anything overly drastic, but for a simple 60min mod, it can't hurt, that's for sure! I'll grab the piece of metal that was cut out and tape it back in place and do a quick drive cycle and then remove it and do the same drive cycle and compare the logs shortly.

Ok, just did a back-to-back about 15 min cycle; back roads, then through town and then onto the highway. If anything, the results are skewed against the vent being open, since the first cycle I did with the vent blocked, and then went right out again with the vent open. I am sure the delta would be wider if I let the truck cool to the same starting temps. The first part of the drive is slow going, about 30-40 MPH and a lot of on/off throttle, so those were higher than the first run, as to be expected without the proper airflow to scrub the residual heat. The second portion, sitting at lights through town was about the same +/- a degree or 2, ambient had gone from 68* to 72* as the sun comes over the trees and mountains and starts to heat things up. The biggest benefit was getting onto the highway, peak temps at the top of a 2nd to 3rd gear run, 35 MPH to 80MPH were 6* cooler with the open vent. From peak it dropped 62* in about 10 seconds, whereas the blocked vent dropped only 56* in the same 10 seconds. The open vent continued to cool things down and scrubbed 73* in 30 seconds and was 11* cooler than the blocked vent, which only scrubbed 66* in the same 30 seconds. Further as I put it in cruise at 70MPH, the open vent was 15* cooler at speed, low load. The last leg is a mile long hill and the shop is at the top of the hill. The open vent was 10* cooler up that hill. Again, I think the #s would favor the open vent more if I waited to let the truck cool between runs. Next step is to add a few spacers to the hood mount (this will somewhat mimic a true hood vent) and see if that scrubs more heat. But I stand by the comment above, for a FREE 60min mod. It's worth it!

I think the proof is in the open highway run which makes sense with the greater air flow volume. Didn't Camaros or Vettes have twin vents in a similar place from the factory? I seem to remember plastic plenums at the top front engine compartment once the hood is popped.

Before removing the bolts from the hood hinges and dealing with re-aligning the hood, I figured I'd try this... I removed the weather stripping that seals the back of the hood. With all the air flow coming in from the front, gotta allow some of that out the back. We shall see!

I don't see any solution that doesn't involve water mgmt, but these free options sure do leave a lot of finds left to pretty up the finishes.

Successfully made it to destination! Uneventful trip overall, but it did fantastic. 4th gear held 65mph even in the big climbs. Jesse is reviewing the logs, but despite fuel economy, it was better than expected. 3.5 hours, 185 miles, big climbs, holding positive boost (mid-high 3PSI with the peak being 4.1PSI), and I only used 2/3 of a gallon of water methanol.

Trans temp held at 215* on average and coolant temps averages right around 200 with one spike hitting 221* (5 mile climb at 3psi consistently). Immediately dropped back down to normal. We have some ideas on how address this, so more to come. Glad it's not a heat soak issue because everything immediately drops.

Anyways, Happy Father's Day to everyone and I'll report/share more upon return early next week.

Glad you made it, first off, we should all thank Brian for the amazing data he is giving the community as well as all the time tweaking and adjusting to make sure he is ready for these tests! Thanks B and Happy Fathers day to you as well!

Yes, I am sure there is quite a bit of efficiency and power left on the table. We were both pretty darn anxious about this test, which is way above anything we expected for this kit. The tune may have been well, too conservative. A few spots seeing 9.9 AFRs and too much of the time in PE. I think bringing the fuel back at touch and adding some more timing and your next trip will be even better!

Pumped with the low usage of meth, that's quite the tow for not even the refilling tank.

In regards to the radiator temps, I think a few hole saw cuts in the FMIC mounting bracket will open up the additional air flow needed to the Rad for anyone towing with the kit. The fast recovery of all the temps is a great sign tho, that it's easily optimized :)

Anyway, enjoy your weekend. We'll talk on the flip!

Didn't see any difference removing the weather stripping from the cowl. The hood is maybe a 16th of an inch from the plastic, so it's not allowing enough flow through the back.

Put some spacers on the hood hinges to pop the back up like a lot of the offroad community does when they think they need it

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I'll try it first!

Also, remembered I grabbed this from Oreilly's a while back, it's from Spectre and IIRC was under $40. Just installed it and will see if it helps. I wonder if the filter is pulling in hot air from below, mixing with the cold air from the front ducts. Ultimately, I think the aluminum heat soaks, but we'll see. I could always put some of that gold thermal tape on the underside.

Yep, we are a heat shield product dealer. We used that stuff on a Mercedes project as the carbon fiber engine covers kept melting from the heat, we layered the bottom of the cover with it and it solved the issue. Same thing, the cover sat about 1" from the turbo.
