I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
    LOL.

When I see a black truck all I ever seem to see are swirl marks and scratches.

The red one I was going to buy back in the day got bought before I could get a deal put together.

That’s true, the red one was a bit less optioned and would have been cheaper.

Some of these comments defy logic.

Mainline locomotives that weight 200 metric tons each are 100% electric with Diesel generators and they pull 30,000 ton coal trains 24/7, Across continents. Electrification is the future.

Toyota hasn't updated the power train since 2007, Right now Tundra V8 is the weakest out of all 5.7L's. You have to adapt change or u get left behind.

30,000 tons is pretty heavy for a coal load, that would be pushing around 230 or so loaded cars. Put enough locomotives on and you have the power, but you don’t have the strength in draft equipment to tolerate buff or draft forces.

My employer has tried this repeatedly with 270 car loaded coal trains, and all they accomplish is burning through crews, coupler knuckles, and $$$. So of course they haven’t given up, because once RR management becomes invested in an idea they will burn piles of money rather than admit failure.

Nah any color aside from black is good with me. Owned a black Z28 for a few years, and got tired of keeping it looking clean.

Three 4500 HP locos, Leader-middle-rear. Not sure about what transportation department deals with but us in engineering pay by changing out strings of rail that get eaten up by all the tonnage.

Thats a mistake. Never own a black car. Trucks are made to get dirty, so black is perfect. I wash my truck every other month, it always looks good even covered in dirt.

Not even close to enough power.

They have tried mostly 2-3-2, or 2-4-2, or 2-3-1. Combining 2 trains of various power configurations.

Again the problem is not power, the problem is buff and draft forces. When you have a train that is literally a hair over 3 miles long, hills become an even bigger issue. One part of the train is descending while another portion is ascending grade, the leading portion is trying to run away and exerting force on couplers. This might be happening in multiple locations in the train at the same time.

At around 390,000lbs of pull a coupler knuckle will rip clean in half. A nice 100% clean new break with no cracks full of rust. Those really big heavy trains often get more than one at a time, since not all the couplers are new.

Worse yet you get a draw bar ripped out, or destroy the center sill of the car. That’s pretty much the end of your day.

We are lucky in the north west, Most our Mainline goes level or down grade but lot of curves all the way down to the Pacific ports. Your case makes sense. You guys have grade issues, you'll definitely need more HP/ton.

We’re usually around .6HPT to 1.0HPT for coal or grain trains. They are very slow on hills, we might top out at 10-11 MPH on a long hill. We also require helper units for some hills.

Freight is usually a bit better, the Q train I ran today was about 2.4HPT. It didn’t have excessive power but at least I wasn’t grinding over every hill at jogging speed.

Down on the transcon where Z’s roam I’ve heard of 6.0HPT on stuff that absolutely must maintain track speed.

Up in Montana and into Spokane they use a lot of power as well.

Back on topic of tying in with pickup trucks.

Yeah all the “Hurrr durrrr got to have muh V8 ‘cause it’s the only thing that will work, an’ them there electric motors can’t tow or haul nuthin!” comments are funny.

I like a V8 too, and would love to see Toyota modernize the 5.7L although making it larger is probably not in the cards without a new block. However, Toyota does not seem inclined to do that if rumors are true.

I don’t think we have to worry as much as I had initially been too about the TTV6. Toyota isn’t swinging for the fences power wise with it. Keep in mind that Ford and now Ferrari have done TTV6’s that are well into the 600hp range. I don’t think a 410hp truck motor of the same displacement is going to blow up because it is high strung.

As for the electric motor, people doubted the Prius. Turned out to be super reliable to this day. Then they doubted Tesla, well the rest of the car might fall apart but the electric motors are anything but weak or unreliable. If most car and truck enthusiasts had paid attention to the transportation world outside of cars and trucks they would have known this decades ago. Electric motors rule in applications that demand high torque and simple robust power transmission. Locomotives, yep electric traction motors. Mining haul trucks, same deal. Marine propulsion, you guessed it direct drive azimuth electric motor/propeller pods.

    Stop worrying so much guys.

Interesting stuff, but we’re talking about the needs for a 1/2 ton pick up. If diesel electrics made sense in trucks, I would assume the semi tractor truck would have had them years ago?

Lol! You're a bit touchy but I appreciate your comparing a train to a capable off road truck. Toyota is indeed adapting to change by offering a full sized mall crawler without a v8 option. Meh!

Not tochy at all, Your "V8" Tundra's payload is only 1300 lbs on a double cab and even less on a crew max. F-150's is over 2200 lbs. That means its a mall crawling grocery getter right now anyways. lol .I would never buy a Ford but FYI.

Mainly I was talking about electrification . That was just an example, then got side tracked.

Cost was probably the main reason for not having that tech into semi trucks, big electric motors cost lot more than a combustion engine. I'm sure Semi guys would've loved to have 250,000 ft/lbs @ 200 rpm lol.
