They better pull a rabbit out of their hat on the engine because half of the audience just walked out over the appearance.

Big HP engine doesn’t mean diddly poo without a nice transmission and heavy duty frame to back it up

otherwise it’s just a nice engine without the towing capacity

Sort of agree. How how much hp and torque does one need in a truck with a 1/2 ton capability.

Give me a V8 with those specs then ok, but a strung out TTV6 with battery assist electric motors and it's a solid meh.

I’d bet a few that Toyota has spent some major money updating the frame, transmission, and rust proofing.

I hate the people that do this. I am looking for real information on the 2022 and there is at least one site that does articles every day and they are horrible gossips pimping speculation for profit. It got so bad that whenever I would see the name I would just not click because I knew it was garbage info from garbage people.

The source of the video has been fairly accurate thus far on his predictions. He used to be an engineer for Toyota and evidently may still have quite a few contacts within the company.

Ad far as the predictions go, they’re not unrealistic for a vehicle from Toyota given their history with hybrid power trains. An electric motor in place of the torque converter in a transmission and frame designed from the start for a hybrid application can probably easily take a large powerful electric motor.

So an additional 70hp and 163lb-ft are well within the realm of possibility, and those numbers track with typical electric motor power outputs in other hybrid systems.

If peak torque numbers are in the same 2000-3600 RPM range that combination will be very impressive in most circumstances. An engine/motor combo making 642lb-ft at 2000RPM is making 244.5hp, and at 3600RPM will make 440hp. So at a mere 3600RPM the hybrid will make more power than the non hybrid at it’s peak power at 5200RPM.

If peak power of 480hp is still at 5200RPM the combo is still making 484lb-ft at that point.

Towing on fairly normally encountered undulating terrain like rolling hills an engine/motor combo like this is going to be a beast. Plus if they program for aggressive regenerative braking the effect will be similar to a diesel with an exhaust brake going down hills, and should keep batteries well charged for the next hill to power over.

So if these numbers are accurate the 2022 Tundra is going to in fact be class leading and it won’t even be close.

In my line of work, fairly accurate sucks, especially " if these numbers are accurate", let alone predictions. Anything else at this point is simply pie in the sky.

    It would be nice.

Those kind of numbers will have the 2021 owners howling with rage about how ugly the 2022 is.

I am not sure how looks have any bearing on the quality and features of a truck, particularly any Toyota made after about 1990. The 2022 is ugly, and the 2007-2021 is even uglier. There hasn’t been a cosmetically appealing pickup made since the Chevrolet C10, so get over it…

I don’t have very many photos of the truck on my iPhone. Let me see… here you can see it on Christmas Day of 2016. I foolishly agreed to run an empty coal train in what turned out to be a whiteout blizzard. I took this photo when I got to the depot, and it only got worse once we managed to get to the train.

You can see my ugly truck flanked by two even uglier Ford products.

From the very little that we can see, it is indeed a hideous looking truck, not sure how you sleep at night knowing that you actually own it.

Because I don’t care much about looks where trucks are concerned?

At heart I’m not a truck guy, to me they’re tools. Like a locomotive, I care how it performs and how easy it makes getting the job at hand done. So power, ease of use, sensible control and gauge layout, and operator comfort are high on my list. Bonus points if visibility all around is decent, and the cab is quiet under full load.

Subjectively I love how some of the old high speed passenger service steam engines look, but I can tell you unequivocally that I do not want to make my living every day firing or running one as a fireman or engineer. Give me that ugly but super functional diesel electric, preferably a newer GE ES44AC because they’re pretty quiet, the cab layout is about as good as it gets, and they pull like a dirty bastard. In fact give me about 4 or 5 of them in a distributed power configuration.
