    I notice my mpg average read drop significantly if you’re a morning warm-up kind of a guy like myself, or any kind of ideling for that matter seems to weigh heavily on the mpg read out. How often do you reset your read out too? I do mine every tank.

    The computer average on the display is false advertisement, bogus and as accurate as any polarized social media source and is a partial truth at best. As described above you need to do it the old fashioned way for calculating “ACTUAL” mileage. I have noticed on my ‘19 Pro that if you fastidiously watch the mpg avg display and drive like a granny or grandpa with hemheroids you can squeeze 1 to 3 mpg more depending on how much you like to hear the sound of the acceleration rumble. I have been driving like all the people I used to get so pissed when I got behind them before the new associated behavioral modification. My 2013 4x4 DC base model definitely got 1 to 3 more mpg more than this new one driving naturally everything being equal. ‘13 average was 13 to 14.5 combo / New TRD is getting 11.5 to 13.5, based on old fashioned calculations and not going by the alt truth display. Personally I wouldn’t let the mpg difference between the taco and tundra be a deciding factor.

    Combined is 14.5 for me (stock) since most of my trips are short. Longer drives and highway MPG and I get about 17 MPG.

    I look at the difference between the total cost of fuel per year between the vehicle that I really want and the vehicle that I'm thinking about compromising on. How much extra will I pay per year to have what I really want? Is it worth it? YOLO

    thank you all for the feedback. with one exception it has all been very insightful and constructive.
    i made the post because I have never owned a truck before. currently drive a manual 3.7 tl. always been a fan of toyota reliability though as a camry was my first car followed by Rav4. had to ask because i see a lot pick up owners criticize toyota’s MPG on trucks, specially with faster fords doing better in that aspect. i wanted to see if the difference was really that big between the 2 trucks to compromise for a much smaller, less powerful tacoma. It doesnt seem. I haven’t read anyone saying you’re going to trade because the tundra is keeping you at the gas pump.

    @speckmon: i think if i wanted to keep driving cars i’d keep my TL or buy something bigger than a civic. but seeing as i want to start off-roading, overlanding, maybe get some jetskis and tow, truck seems more reasonable. the post was made because taco guys keep saying go taco tundra is so bad on gas. from what’ve read on here it doesnt make sense

    I find the mpg read out to be pretty accurate on my truck. I reset it every time I fuel up. If it is not reset it’s going off of long-term average instead of just that tank of fuel. But I imagine some peoples might not be as accurate as others.

    According to the EPA, Tundra gets the worst fuel economy of any full size truck but the latest Truck King Challenge found it to be second best, after the 2019 Sierra/ Silverado with the 6.2L V8 and the 10 speed auto.

    When I was looking at switching from my Tacoma to a Tundra, I did exactly what many here are saying to do; figure out how much more in gas it will cost you. That varies depending on driving habits, but in my case I figured it would be an additional $50/month worst case. To me, that was worth switching to the Tundra, and so far it hasn't even been an additional $50.

    I've actually found that the computer estimate on tank MPGs is pretty close on my truck. I hand calc every single tank, and it's been surprisingly close, with the computer frequently actually underestimating how well it did.

    Now my Subaru Impreza, different story. That thing will consistently read 1-3 MPG higher than you're actually getting.

    Good to know, maybe doing the reset each time will do the trick. I obsessively figure the MPG on every fill the old way and will start comparing the results with doing the reset.

    Yep I check my mileage every time I fill up. I typically get 10 miles per gallon on my short trips to and from work. About 3 miles LOL out on the highway I’m anywhere between 14.5 and 17. Once I got 18

    The tank average resets automatically after a fill up. He may be talking about the fuel info block you can add to the main screen, shows you fuel efficiency history and how many miles it figures you have left on the tank. That you can reset.

    I must not have that feature in my 15. Mine is center cluster and only resets when I hold down the button on the steering wheel.

    what are some of the mods you guys would recommend if i go with SR5 with Trd offroad package? i want to be able to hit trails right away and i knw im making a trip to mew mexico from VA probably within weeks if not days of getting the truck.

    I would leave the suspension alone if you’re going to take a trip that quickly. You can’t bank on everything going right that close to a trip. Plus you’d like to put the suspension through its paces and have time to check everything. Scheduling an alignment needs to fit in there too. Get some floor mats to help protect from all that dirt. Maybe a bedliner sprayed on to keep that looking good.

    I have filled up 19 times since owning the truck. Most of my driving is in town, and I drive like a grandpa most of the time (I am one, LOL). I average 11.4 mpg. (High of 17.5 and a low of 8.8)

    3” lift, black step bars, aftermarket wheels, LT305/55R20 was this way when I brought it.
    My is a 2015 CM 1794 on the steering wheel press the display button and hold it till it clears, but this is not really correct (I use the fuelly app or I check long hand.

    that is really good, 1 time I got 19.2 mpg
    When we was on vacation to Florida that was in July summer gas is different that winter gas. So during the summer you should get a little better mileage in the summer

    on the voting you voted taco. can you give me some feedback as to what points you were considering? im pretty sure im going to go tundra. it seems the only real advantage taco has is mpg n it’s really not a noticeable difference based on what everyone driving tundras is showing. i dont see myself sacrificing the more powerful 5.7 for 3-4 miles per gallon. i just hate when i step on the pedal and vehicles don’t respond

    Idk what these guys are doing but It looks like most of them are showing you their bests. I consistently get 12 to 13ish around town, sure highway is a little more but my buddy with his brand new taco 6spd is getting over 20 everywhere. I dont care much though, my commute is short and I'm a single guy with no kids and a pretty solid job...

    I bought the truck to tackle mountain roads with ease, haul people and their gear, and to blast through trails and it does all of those. the power is fun for sure and seems pretty endless, but you will get 5mpg here and there if you're on it hard, hence why I carry 5 gallon cans of fuel with me when we go out, bound to get low.

    For the record wasn't trying to give you shit, there's no shortage of guys whining about how they don't get great mileage on here. IMO you dont buy this truck for mileage or efficiency, you buy it for purpose and beast mode. :mudding:

    It's a mountain pass, but that goes for all hills. I like putting it in real time MPG and seeing how low it actually goes, that pic was avg. and reset right before the incline. That bar is consistently below 10 for anyone in the hills, but who cares
