    morning fam,

so i’m getting a truck and it will be my first pick up. i am heart-split between the tacoma and the tundra mainly due to tundra’s MPG and the fact that to get Trd pro capability would cost so much more, but i can deal with an SR5 with trd off road package. so it really comes down to MPG. for those that drive the tundra as a daily vehicle, what are you guys getting assuming you’re not stepping on it like a mustang or something. thanks! looking foreard to y’alls feedback

Mine is all stock for now and I'm averaging 16 mpg. I drive fairly conservative and don't plan on getting crazy with mods. For the size of this truck (CrewMax, 4X4, 5.7) I'm very happy with the mileage.

Summer I can get close to 17 mpg, winter more like 15 MPG, winter blend and warming up in the morning kills my milage. Overall don't really care, if I wanted excellent MPG I would have bought a car.

I average around 14.6 in my tundra. That's including the ridiculous traffic we have out here, and me not driving conservatively at all. Trust me, just get the tundra, a tacoma's mpg is going to be just about as shitty when similarly equipped.

I think it depends on your situation. I currently have a 17 Tacoma SR5 and average around 17-18 mpg, 60% highway. The Tundra, from what I've been reading, I think you'll be around 14-15 so you're not losing much but you'll be gaining stronger engine and more cab space.
I'm thinking of getting a Tundra mainly due to space because of family size.
Tacoma's are more than capable so I would say if you're single, no plans for family within 5-10 years and really concern for mpg's, go for the Tacoma.

Test drive each one, then decide. The difference in mpg is not all that much generally (IMO). If you need 4wd, you will always get less mpg. My 2018 Tundra is 2wd so I get 16.5-19.0, mostly around 17.0. This is measured, not what the computer estimates. If you like "giddy-yup", it is Tundra all the way.

I have a stock suspension TRD OR , I added LT275/70/r18 which are heavier than stock tires and get 17-18 highway where the the stock P-metric 265/70 were getting about 19-20. Pulling my bass boat in these Ozark hills it's about 12-13 and daily driving 14-16 the lower end is because I let her idle in the morning to warm up for about 30 minutes because its winter.

NO LONGER HAVE A TUNDRA... Waiting
My signature shows it.. almost 5k at the moment.

    EDIT: LOL funny..
I just did a quick calculation, i'm at roughly $1000 bucks for fuel, almost 5k. If and when I hit 100k, I would have paid nearly $20,000+/- in fuel cost.

So, if I drive it to 200k, assuming gas prices are stable.. I would have paid in gas what I paid for the truck.

    Pretty amusing.

2019 Tundra. 5.7. Average mpg is 18 city/hwy combined, sometimes 19. When I drive just hwy (home to work) I average around 22-23.

I had a Tacoma, now a Tundra. I get 1-2 mpg less in the Tundra. If you are worried about mpg, I suggest not getting a truck. The Tacoma uses a lot of gas and the Tundra uses a bit more than a lot of gas.

Mpg in the Tacoma isn’t that great. Sure it’s better then the tundra but why take less power and interior space for a couple mpg difference? My lifted 2016 Tacoma got 15mpg and my lofted tundra gets 12mpg. 3 mpg for a much stronger vehicle is well worth it to me.

Agree with @Guhner123. I went through the same phase. But I ended up a Tundra SR5. Love the how roomy it is and much more powerful. Once again I live in Utah, parking space is pretty good unlike California. Before my mods and bigger tires mpg average 16. But after mods average mpg 12-13.

12.5 -14mpg here but I am always loaded bed or towing a trailer. I can only crack like 17mpg on the hwy, I also have a Tacoma and its not much better then my Tundra. They are Toyota trucks...mpg is not a strong suit.

13 mpg in the city on my Tundra, lifted with 35's. Honestly, if you get a Tacoma and lift/level with bigger tires, your mpg still won't be THAT great...only marginally better than a Tundra, maybe a few more mpg better.

Depending on your vehicle passenger needs and financial situation, I’d say Tundra all the way. The cost of a Tacoma vs Tundra of similar package was so close when I was shopping, like $3,000-$4,000 it didn’t seem worth it for my needs. I use my Tundra for weekend hunting/fishing trips and long family holiday trips. I average around 15-15.5 for the local outdoor adventures and about 17-18 mpg on the highway runs to see the extended family. The Tundra’s drivetrain has a lot more history than what’s currently offered in the Tacoma, something to think about.

If the cost difference is important to you or you fall under the “me” and not “we” for the purpose of your truck, then maybe the Tacoma is the better option. This however wasn’t the case for me. I haven’t heard a lot of stories of guys going from a Tundra to Tacoma, but I’ve heard lots from a Taco to Tundra.

thank you all. the feedback has been quite surprising considering all the hype on the tacomas due to fame and resale. but you guys have been bringing up some important factor i had not considered. im only loosing about 3-4 mpg but gaining a big difference on power and torque. i need the truck. it will be my daily driver but i am so ready to start off roading and over landing. plus the occasional modwest roadtrip from east coast with the gf and 3 kids. definitely the roomier Tundra starting to seem more practical. sorry if im using txt grammar. lol

If this is your daily drive get a tundra. Space + reliably + power= the perfect daily driver. The Tacoma is a cool truck but the 3.5 is not powerful at all.

When was the last time you checked your tire prsssure and had an alignment check? Check your air filter too. Do you clear your average mpg read out?

do goys offroad often. how do you compensate for not having diff locker. i’ve never done anything off road but from my readings and several videos viewed that is a necessity
